I'm interested to know how these have done, especially you guys out in the central valley. How have you fared with these, Dick Douglas? I know you've gotten pretty cold, too

5 days of freezing temps, one day all the way to 26.6F, several leaves on a 15 gallon double got 30% burn damage. This specimen was 10 feet away from a copernicia alba that was untouched by the cold. This palm isn't very hardy as a seedling. The reports that this palm is hardy to 20F cannot be right. People are probably protecting their palms through their freezes. My p. cocoides seedlings have fared much better.

Pelagodoxa henryana
by Central Floridave- 13 replies

I've read no one has been brave enough to test out how low this palm can go. So, I kept a potted one out under oak. It saw consecutive mornings of near freezing temps. 35F one morning. No frost. I wasn't brave enough to let it sit out when I knew it was going near 32. But, mine survived 35F with no visible damage. Its about 3 years old in a pot. Its currently in the house so its protected now.

Just wanted to share some interesting data from my nursery. I had a 15g Pelagodoxa henryana 5' -6' tall in my shade house, right next to two Joey altifrons. The Pelagodoxa henryana died (along with 15 1gs) but my Joey palms survived. I don't understand this as I thought the Joeys would be lost as well. They survived a low of 29F and probably 10+ days of cold weather. I'm really shocked by this.

Pensacola Date Palm Disaster
by Matthew92- 9 replies
- 2.8k views
The college I go to in Pensacola had a formal planting of date palms in front of the main auditorium building. They were planted in 2002 as smaller trees maybe 10 feet tall with only several feet of trunk. They eventually got to about 25-30 feet tall. However, the 2013-2014 winter took a major toll: there was around 17 degrees, an entire day basically below freezing, multiple mid to low 20's, and a coating of freezing rain during which it went to 20 degrees. Almost total defoliation. One of the palms (11 total) actually died while the others barely hung on. Next winter, although not as hard, wasn't much better, getting around 20 degrees. The canopies were still not fully …

Hi there folks, i havent been on here for a while but thanks to all who gave me great advice. I have some strange marks on my phionix date palm of 10 years, its just had some hard frost for about two weeks here up in north of england uk just before christmas. It was already under transplant shock from planting in the september 2022 then i moved it again in about mid november as i had put it in a wet area, my bad choice! Its still green in the middle spears but im seeing this black marking hard stuff on the fronds now. I have let it open now from having it tied up from the attached photos to get some son. Any help or advice would be great, im just hoping some warmer …

We were a few days without heat at our greenhouse after the visquine tore and blew off about a month ago. The greenhouse is located almost 10 miles inland with no urban or river warming effects. I have a few 2 gallon P. borsigianums, they recived slight burn at 43.5F with no canopy.

Two small (8" tall) specimens under canopy. 2007/2008 winter, about 10 freezes, the lowest was 23.3F (15 hrs below freezing). 10%-15% leaf damage on both specimens. 2008/2009 winter, low so far after 8 freezes has been 24.1F (14.5 hrs below freezing). One specimen 20% damaged, other specimen no damage. This is a surprisingly tender Phoenix. None of my other Phoenix, whether exposed or under canopy, have shown one iota of damage (sylvestris, sylvestris robusta, acaulis, theophrastii, reclinata). Plants were purchased from J.D. Andersen as "Phoenix humilis" and provenance is unknown. Perhaps there are stronger forms from other provenances. This is also a very slow-growi…

~3 year old seedling in 2g citrus pot in shade house. Slight dark splotches during the December 2006 on fronds partially exposed under shade cloth. Spots disappeared after a few days. Temp measured under shade cloth 24F. Three days in mid-20's. Jan 2007, low @18" two feet away was 15.8F. Multiple days with upper teens. Initially unprotected, except for shade cloth for several days. After reading mid-teens, I threw a light blanket over it. Minor dark splotches, same as Dec. 2006 freeze. No serious damage so far.

Still working on the temp numbers, but 16 out of 18 days below freezing. Most days 12+ hours below freezing, rebounding to mid-40's. Official lows in Madera and Fresno in low 20's. Some frost every day, but nowhere near as heavy as normal 28-32F freezes. I measured mid-teens F at 18" in one part of my yard. OOPS... Forgot to bring these in. Back to Home Depot! In a ~30g tall terracotta pot next to house, some protection from eves and surrounding Canna. 10" pot size. This had been uncovered during the Dec 2006 freeze (~24F) with no damage and was unprotected the first couple of days of this freeze (recorded 24F nearby). I started throwing a heavy blanket…

Hello, new to this forum and palm trees. Thanks for all the insightful posts! I'm located in Hattiesburg, MS (zone 8) and received severe burn on 2 Phoenix sylvestris(3 foot of trunk)and 1 Phoenix canariensis (2 foot of trunk) despite some limited protection. We had at least 3 nights of 15-16F weather during the recent snap. The only positive news is some green is still present on the emerging center buds. I was told to leave on all the dead foliage for added protection as there may be a chance of recovery when spring/summer arrives. Really hope so as they have done really well during the prior 2 winters. I tied up the dead foliage on the trees to help shield the cente…

This is (was?) a two year old, in the ground plant about 18" tall. The cold december temps with plenty of near- freezing nights battered it, but it continued to push a nice green spear. 26F seems to have put an end to that. Unlikely to survive IMO.

This one has totally surprised me! I have 3 small seedlings, 1 planted and 2 in pots, which took 3 weeks of sub zero temps with at least 2 excursions to -4c/24.8v and 2 lower dips to -5c/23f. The 2 in pots have about 25% leaf burn, the planted one is still pristine with no damage what so ever. All 3 were understory to my Acacia. I have since brought the 2 in pots indoors to help recovery. They are still alive and growing again slowly. Regards Andy,
