This plant is about 6 years old and very slow.. makes a leaf a year. Leaves about 5' tall now and get a bit burned every year... but less each year. However, this year 27F for 5 hours... some leaf damage, but less than expected based on last year's damage... but no frost this time. To me the significant thing about this freeze is what did well and what didn't. This palm is almost leaning against a large, 3 stemmed Dypsis baronii seedling about the same height. That plant has lost every leaf- fried to almost a black color. Yet this one has two healthy green leaves and one with some spotting... so this plant is obviously significantly hardier than Dypsis baronii.

This might be another one of the "suprises". I have an overgrown 5 gal that had no cover at all, was under 28F for 4 nights and 2 of those hit 26F. It looks about like it did when this started.

I have two 10 year old seedlings... one in the artic lawn where temps were probably pretty low (27F is the lowest I recorded, but this seedling is near a Trachycarpus latisectus that was defoliated, and a Trachycarpus martianus that was scorched significantlly)... one leaf did fold in on itself. Later this leaf was lost, as was one other. This plant has had frost on it 4x now this winter with no damage at all, but temps were not even 32F those nights. There was no frost at all this night. Turns out, from how things did in neighboring yards and from what little actual data was taken near me, that the edge of my yard may have gotten down to 24F... this palm is in the …

A while back I came across this web page that gave zone ratings for palms and select cycads. I have done a search on palmtalk and have not found any reference to this page, so I thought I'd share. https://realpalmtrees.com/knowledge-base/world-plant-cold-hardiness-zones/comparison-charts-usda-zones-and-palm-trees/

Recommendations for freeze damage
by Jenasmith- 1 reply

I’m looking for thoughts and recommendations on my palms. I have 7 California fan palms (I think that’s what they are!). I’m in TEXAS (Fort Hood area) and the freeze in February was sad. The fronds all immediately went pale brown when we thawed (some fronds had snapped from the snow/ice weight) and I was advised to just wait 4-6 weeks before trimming any away. I trimmed many dead fronds away 2 weeks ago and have noticed the black fungus/mold problem starting. I began testing to see if the spears would pull and sure enough they have and the poor things have terrible rot down at least 2 feet into the heart. I just treated for the first time using H202 (3% solution) and spra…

Rhapidophyllum hystrix

No one has reported on R. hystrix, but maybe because it's one of the most cold hardy palms on earth. I have several scattered around my garden, and in my climate they require a good bit of shade in the summer. I'd like to put in a plug for Rhapidophyllum because it seems to be a very under utilized palm. It has a reputation of being slow growing, and it is in its early years, but once established, and in the right spot, they speed up. They are even nice looking as a smaller palm and somewhat resemble a large Rhapis. They are very exotic looking if given the right growing conditions, but they do require a lot of heat in the summer. I have one that is probably over 40 y…

I have a Rhapis humilis that survived the 2009/2010 winter that had lows of 19.3 on two occasions (if memory serves me right). This winter with lows of 24 I thought would be a snap however I did something stupid. I left a sprinkler on a created a Winter not Wonderland but a Hellish Artic Nightmare. My humilis (ten trunks about three foot tall) now has spear pull. Does anyone have any experience with cold damaged humilis?

4x consecutive days of frost at: -0.7 / -2.9 / -4.7 / -0.6°c ( 30.7 / 26.8 / 23.5 / 30.9°f ) This is 20-days after the freeze. R. baueri var. raoul island ( top ) were fried by the frost, but the R. chathamica ( bottom ) has no damage. Both forms were next to one another during the freeze, but pulled up against the house.

Sabal causiarum

Here's a Sabal causiarum from the same Seattle garden as the heavily damaged Brahea edulis. It was planted as a small plant in the early 90's. It has never had really heavy damage, (this is the worst I've seen it) and benefits somewhat from being surrounded by pavement and rock. As for the ID, well we can only hope the owner got it right. It doesn't look right for a lot of the better known hardy Sabal species, though. Here again is the weather for that neighborhood during our big freeze. The coldest night was about 16 degrees but it was below freezing for a long time and snowed almost two feet. Magnolia Weather Station History
