Freeze Damage update
by The Real Tree Doctor- 0 replies

Just wanted to add a little information above freezing conditions for palm trees . Many people talk about palms that are freeze hardy and they seem to ignore the problems created by stress from freezing conditions on any tropical plant. Stress that is unusual to any palm can attract many different insect problems to the palm. These insects may not kill them immediately, but several years later the palm can die. Freeze Damaged Galveston Bismarckia

I've saved this great specimen twice over the last 15 years. In fact after Hurricane Ike and the freeze that winter, I joined the Palm Society to get recommendations for treatment. February 14-17 We had 18 degrees for at least 24-30 hours. The unfolded spear is green below the freeze damage. I treated it after the freeze with copper fungicide and have been watering it weekly. What do you think my chances are & any suggestions?

I was looking online and came across this application protection. Has anyone tried it? It states to apply above 50F when anticipated freezes occur, preferably a few days ahead or 6-8 hours if need be. Curious, because it seems if it did work to some degree it may help those slightly marginal plams and plants get through. Greg

Frost/cold damage from record December 2010
by PalmatierMeg- 2 replies

Yesterday (1/2/11) I photographed some of the damage my gardens sustained from my record-breaking cold December. I tried to protect the most sensitive small palms but when the last arctic front rolled in on 12/26/10 I was out of town, so everything except the Cyrtostachys (which I stashed indoors) was on its own. When I got home on noon Dec. 27 I ran about covering stuff till dark. Even so, some palms are pretty beat up. In lieu of inklings that my colder winters may be here to stay (no political commentary intended or desired) I am evaluating future gardening endeavors. Adonidias on east side of lanai. Too tall to be protected. They survived last winter and should thi…

Who is ready for the winter? I am not, especially not in Virginia! But it is a great opportunity to collect freeze data, like every winter. If you protect palms, what palms are you protecting this winter and how?

Green Fronds Falling

In West Palm Beach we had 8 out of nine nights in the 30s. PBI registered 32F one night. I was surprised how little browning was observed compared to the Christmas 89 freeze. Now that we have been warm for a week, more palms are showing some browning of the fronds. But more interestingly, I have notice a few palms that appear damage free started dropping green fronds. Especially the Adonidia merrillii, Heterospathe elata, and Veitchia macdanielsii. This is a new cold damage outcome for me.

Greenville SC Freeze Damage

As many may know, In December 2022 we had a cold front came through. Dropped down to 7 degrees. I have several small pindo palms, medateranian palms, and windmill palms about 3'-4' tall in the ground. Almost all of the fronds on all the trees turned completely brow. There is a few spears that were coming out before the freeze that are brown as well. The weather now is starting to break. It is possible to get another day or to below freezing. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Do I cut all fronds off. Pull brown spears. Or should I wait a few more weeks. I'm afraid to ask this question, Are they all just dead. Thanks .

We live in Katy Texas and experienced a hard freeze a few weeks ago. I just trimmed off the dead/brown palms - all center pieces still enter but brown. The largest palm’s entire middle section is dry, brittle, and falling off. All have a lot of debris around the boots. What should I do?! New to palms. Thanks!

First winter with palm trees. Most of the damage is already done on my Sylvester since there shouldn’t be anymore freezing nights. The shorter tree had it worse than the taller tree, but just about all of the fronds are burned on my Sylvesters but some fronds are almost completely burned with a tiny bit green at the bottom of each frond and some are only burned half way down the frond. And the baby fronds in the middle are still green so they’re not dead. But how should I go about treating this in spring. Should I cut off everything except for the meristem or only cut the lower fronds? And should I spray fungicide or is there no need to.

29 degrees-no damage visible (yet) no frost 33 degrees- Nothing as well. no frost Keeping in mind that damage can show up well into the future, I was surprised to see no damage at all to an exposed champagne palm. It has about 5-5.5' of trunk and carries 5-6 fronds. It is (or was) flowering.
