Kentiopsis oliviformis, in ground, 4 feet overall. 24.1F, no frost, no canopy, planted next to a 5 foot fence and covered up w/ a sheet. No Damage.... except the oldest leaf is on it's way out now about a week after the freeze. It was about time anyway so not a major issue. A new leaf opened last week and even it shows no damage.

Sitting right next to my Magnifica. A big 5 gal, under shadecloth and sheet over that. 500watt light under cover with them, temp sensor on top of pot hit 32F. Appears to be fine, knock on wood.

Latania lontaroides

Small palm in 7 gallon pot. The "official" air temperature on my weather station (at about 4-5 ft above ground ) was 34F. But, due to the still air, I measured 29F at ground level. This palm likely thus saw something in the lower 30's. This palm was in the open and not exposed to frost. Lower leaves very obviously "displeased". This is not a good 3/4 scale Bismarckia replacement

I have several of these in ground ranging from 5 to 15 gallon size. Two of the smaller ones are near the coldest part of the yard, which saw at least 2 nights of 29F temps. They look really good. It's no surprise that they prefer cool temps, but my guess is that they will handle cold perhaps as low as 26F or 27F before showing damage. The largest one I have was also undamaged during the 2007 event which was even worse than this one.

Leucothrinax morrissii

I am thoroughly amazed that with two nights in the mid to upper 20's here in Mandarin (a southern suburb of Jacksonville, FL), that two Leucothrinax morrissii show no injury whatsover! Now it might become visible in upcoming days or weeks, but compared to all Arcontophoenix in my yard, Ravenea rivularis, Sabal mauritiformis, Dioon spinulosum, & even Livistona chinensis! the Leucothrinax look much better. I wasn't here so I don't know the precise low but I think both plants were exposed to temperatures around 25-27F for at least 6-8 hours. I'm sure it was below freezing for at least 12 hours.

I bought these as one gallon plants in the spring of 2004 expecting to enjoy them for one summer. They have never gotten enough water, and I can't honestly say they have ever grown, but here they are...still. They are under shade cloth against a south east facing fence. Before this freeze event, I threw a tarp over the shade cloth. They looked like this in July. I'm going to start taking better care of them!

True L. triphylla (only 3 inches tall!) was unprotected but showed no damage next to Heliconias that melted somewhat. I assume it hit 31-32? All were in a warmer location, however.

Seedling about 6 years old without protection, just starting to crank out a lot of leaves (planted 8 months ago from a rootbound 1 gal) got hit with around 26F for over 5 hours, and basically defoliated. check out my DAvesgarden blog on this one: http://davesgarden.com/journal/j/viewentry/95401/

Livistona nitida

Kind of toasted after two 14-degree lows and several 8b nights, plus lots of low 20s. Had thin sheets on each of the three three-footers sometimes, but they were blown off at various times, often all night. I'd call it heavy to severe damage, though the spears and just-opening leaves are only moderately damaged. Gotta say that they looked pretty good until it started to drop below 20 -- maybe a little better than my l. australis and chinensis. DL. decipiens/decora is actually about the same as nitida, and doesn't look so bad comparatively, since half the fronds were frayed and straw-like even before the cold. Jon T.

I have no idea why this plant was alive without the freeze, but it looks perfect after the freeze as well. The temps were 27F, but the palm was below canopy. Gary

BIG 15 gal in pot. Fronds were lush, 3' across. Now looks anorexic spikes, leaves at 1/3 their size. No protection, hit 26F hardly protected with sheet. No visible frost. ------------ Adding info, since I have been a little leary of overwatering this winter due to damp-offs last winter, I have watered on the light side. I think with the large size, I think its possible it was too dry and cold. (probably large enough it was still consuming some water through this winter and I haven't given it enough.) ----------------- Also, brought into garage tonight, spear looks pretty good.
