Verschaffeltia splendida

Verschaffeltia splendida , bronzing on all but one leaf, and that single one is off color.......grown under canopy, so no frost although had spotty areas in the open, lowest here abt 34.5 during the 7-10 day event. I would guess that this is less acute injury and is more chronic damage, largely precursed by the prolonged below 40 temps.

No damage to this plant 6' tall over all to temps 27F for 5 hours +. Note that Syagrus schizophylla, which touches this plant, about the same height, was badly damaged by freeze.

No damage noted on trunking specimens. Still working on the temp numbers, but 16 out of 18 days below freezing. Most days 12+ hours below freezing, rebounding to mid-40's. Official lows in Madera and Fresno in low 20's. Some frost every day, but nowhere near as heavy as normal 28-32F freezes. No overhead canopy.

Hello everyone, I'm new to this site and was looking to get some help. Firstly, I'm 21 years old and I have loved palms ever since I can remember. I just recently moved outside of Houston Texas from new orleans(regretfully the northern side). So I decided to get my first palm tree ever andI have been obsessed with it ever since. It is a queen palm and I bought it at home depot with about 7 or 8 feet tall leaves. I planted it in early July and it grew to about 11feet(guess). I know that's late to plant it but it seemed fine. However of course I planted it just in time for the coldest damn winter ever, I think we even saw some teens at night. Anyways I boug…

when a frond grows part way out and then stalls...

I have a pseudophoenix sargentii that was badly damaged during this past January 2018 freeze, here in Gainesville, Florida, USA. We had two bad freezes this January, back to back. The spear will not pull out. The post-freeze frond grew part way out in roughly March, yet it simply stalled and only made it about five or six inches out of the bud area. This palm has not grown since then. Is it dead? Should I continue to wait while it just sits there stunted? The partial frond is perfectly green. Realistically, nobody should be growing pseudophoenix sargentii north of Orlando, but I decided to do so anyway. I was aware of the risks when I took on this e…

Do you have any plants (palms or not) that have surprised you with their resilience to the cold so far this winter? Any plants that you accidentally left outside unprotected maybe, or perhaps you just decided they will be left on their own this winter and yet they've made it just fine? For me it's Albizia moluccana. I have some tiny seedlings, no more than an inch tall, which have been left outside. Despite their age and the fact that they are tropical trees from the equator, they look fine and even keep growing. True, they haven't seen anything lower than 3 C (37 F), but it's still a surprise for me. A new cold wave has just started here and it will last for few d…

Zone 8b Woes

Hey! new to the site and not really sure where to begin: finally decided to just make a general post about cold hardiness with palms in NW FL zone 8b. My botanical interests started when I fell in love with the lush northern canopy trees living in Illinois. Moving back to Northern Florida (where I had lived as a child) though, my interest in growing palm trees just took off. After moving back in 2007, I have had a long list of palm and tropical plant endeavor's with many of which never pulled through brutal zone 8b winters. Here's some detailed experience I've had with some "hot" species that are attempted to be grown here frequently. Chinese Fan Palm: F…
