Disappointed in my mules
by Nicole Milner- 6 replies
I wanted so much for my mules to make it through the texas freeze but they look like there is no hope. A lot of money spent for 1 month of enjoyment. The green that is new growth has a lot of yellowing. I wish there was someone local that I could pay to guide me. So disappointed.

Dypsis 'ambositrae'
by Geoff- 13 replies

Not sure if these are the 'real' thing, but what's been sold as D ambositrae in California for the last 10 years. Anyway, both slow growing 6 year old seedlings (4' over all about) showed no damage I thought... but just checked on them and 27F for 5 hours appears to have done more hurt than I thought. Leaf color looks pretty good.. but these 'normally' have darker leaves.. however, all petioles just 'melted' and only frizzled spikes remain... suspect both plants are dead and just don't know it yet.

Dypsis albofarinosa, 1 gallon size plant, planted next to a 5 foot wood fence. 24.1F, no frost, covered w/ a sheet No apparent damage. Note: The newest leaf is having a real slow go at turning green. It's very white still due to ongoing cold temps this month.

Dypsis carlsmithii

Our January 22 freeze didn't affect a small Dypsis carlsmithii (about four feet tall, with no trunk yet). It's at the edge of shade from a laurel oak and in a bed with other palms and cycads about the same height. Palms in the yard, with full exposure to the sky, that suffered no damage include Archontophoenix cunninghamiana, A. tuckeri, Carpentaria, Coccothrinax barbadensis, Dypsis decaryi, Thrinax radiata, and Dypsis "fine leaf". One of two Satakentia liukiuensis (about 6 feet tall) suffered a great deal of leaf browning. Neighbors' Dypsis lutescens suffered considerable leaf browning. The temperature, under a clear sky with a slight breeze, fell to freezing abo…

Dypsis dacaryi / help soft trunk
by Jupiter1- 0 replies

I have a nice triangle with about a foot or less of clean trunk just put it in the ground about 4 months ago. Noticed over the Last week or so the trunks becoming soft. We have had a good amount of rain but other then that I cant think of a change. Ideas? Is it doomed? I'd love to keep it but shopping for a replacement isnt the worst thing in the world. some pics to come

No damage whatsoever at 24F and no frost. And this is a palm I dug up and moved last summer. Multiple nights below 28F, small 15-gal sized. I think Dypsis in general is coming in stronger than I anticipated in this arctic event.

Large specimen, in 20-25 gallon tub, from a greenhouse, I believe, at my place since early November (oh sweet days of innocence!) under the Tree of Lust and Desire, a 50 foot (17m?) tall Cedrus deodara. It's about 8-9 feet (2.66 - 3 m) tall, with about 6-8" at the base. No damage, so far, after four days running of all-night 28-29 FF (-1 C) in exposed areas. dave

Dypsis lastelliana Highland Form
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 2 replies
Dypsis lastelliana highland form dried up except for new leaf and spear. Cold exposure: 31F, two nights for 4 hour freezes in my upper garden, with several more days close to freezing. It was barely cold enough to burn the tip of banana leaves 2 feet away, and a Cordyline fruticosa right next to the lastelliana was untouched, most of the bananas are still green. There was even overhead canopy. This thing is a wimp, needs an 11a climate somewhere along the coast in Southern California.

Low of 29. no frost Largest clump with fronds about 10 feet in the air. Freeze damage to the highest frond only. The rest of this one seems ok. 1 other smallish clump untouched even in the coldest part of the yard in shade. 4 other clumps are canopy protected and I haven't seen them yet.

Dypsis Ovobontsira

So far, this appears to be a fairly hardy palm for So Cal. I had a small 1 gal sit outside ALL winter in a pot (only brought in when I thought might reach mid 30's, about 4-5 times) It regularly saw high 30's, and although slow, continues to plug along! I do know of a larger one at Matt P's and it is in the ground and growing...

Dypsis pembana, 2 gallon size plant, in ground, 2 feet tall to tip of new spear. 24.1F, no frost, planted under a Queen Palm and next to a hedge, covered with a sheet. No immediate damage/burn. This palm normally shows some spotting during winter, which it's been doing for several weeks due to the ongoing cold.
