Cold damage in North Brevard
by Jimbean- 7 replies

I have different accounts to exactly how cold it got here. It seems that the temperature dropped to around 23F to 24F in Port St. John. I am sure GSN could add to this if he wishes to. Note: this cold damage is very unusual for the area; Port St. John is roughly the equivalent to either Sarasota or Ruskin for those of you on the west coast of Florida. Pseudophoenix sargentii: Ravenea rivularis: Ficus aurea (defoliated): Ficus benjamina (defoliated):

Cold damaged palm care
by smatofu- 1 reply
Hi, How to take care of a cold damaged dormant palm (no spear pull, no growth, no green spear). Questions to advance forum members. 1. Water the palm or not? 2. Cover the top when raining or not? 3. Cover the palm at night with a blanket to make it warm and potentially to promote growth? 4. Fertilize? 5. Use copper, hydrogen peroxide, or both? For the beginners: - if you cover then use something breathable, like a paper bag. Never plastic because you may cook your palm, - if you fertilize, don't fertilize too much and too close to the trunk. Thank you in advance! …

We have had an unusually cold and windy Winter. This palm has decided to send its new shoots in this manner. They are not spears, all five are partially open, showing the ribbing. Growth is very slow. What do think is going on?

Cold Winter In Oregon
by Ryland- 6 replies

Now that there has been some time for damage to manifest in my palm garden in Oregon, I'm going to share what made it and what didn't. Almost all of my palms were very young, many of them still with strap leaves, since I had only built the garden a year and a half ago on a very small budget. This being said, my palms were probably not quite as hardy as would be expected of the same plants at a more mature stage. However, all of the palms were protected with a layer of leaves around their bases. The winter was the coldest in S. Oregon since 1990, with a low in the valley reaching 8F. I recorded 12F for the low at the garden. What survived: Trachycarpus fortunei - …

comparing the cold hardiness of Areca catechu vs Areca macrocalx
by John of Ponce- 6 replies

I'd like to report an interesting finding. For the last couple of years I have been growing a variety of palms on my patio and pots. I have grown to love the ultra Rich Green that you see in the Areca class of palms. Recently over Christmas when I was out of town the temperature on my patio got down to 35°. My triple-headed Areca catechu was pretty severely burnt while my double-headed Areca macrocalx located right beside my catechu was killed dead outright. John

Copernicia alba

In north Florida. Low of 21 F, 10 hours at freezing temps. 3 days of freezing temps. No overhead protection. Little or no frost. 15 mph winds, advective freeze. No "new" damage. This plant had a bad case of what I think was leaf skeletonizer. I believe I took care of that problem and there doesn't appear to be any new damage from the freeze. This plant is about 5ft OA, with about 1.5 ft of trunk.

7 gallon plant, removed from green house 5.5 yrs ago, 6 fronds or so,10" height, just starting to grow well this past summer, high wind exposure (!), saw 32F (measured far side of prop. under patio cover, temp was almost certainly lower for this location), no canopy, frost at least one day, spike pulled out on 3/14/07, total loss. 3 gallon plants, ~3 fronds, 6" height, virtually same location, w/ less wind exposure, no damamge.

Copernicia ekmanii

Forgot to bring in this 1 gal Copernicia ekmanii during our quick cold snap last week. My house had a low of 35F for about 4 hours. The next day the outer leaves looked fried but the center spear and newest leaf were green. Tonight, one week later, the spear and leaf pulled. Treating it with hydrogen peroxide.

Seedling just 6" tall, but actually about 6 years old (what a slug!) undamaged by 27F (or possibly colder) while Livistona saribus seedlings (about same age) just 1' away were scorched

I forgot my Sago Palm outside last night. I didn't know it was going to snow. Uh oh. I was up at 4:30 looking at it through my window. Some snow on it. 10:50 AM more snow on it. There is minimal damage.

Cyphophoenix elegans

OK, all I have is a dinky seedling with three leaves that's been in the ground a little over a year.. in full sun. And it took this summer's 120F day without any problems... and just the smallest hint of scorch from the 27F freeze a few nights ago. This plant has no overhead protection, and is living 2' from a 6 year old Dypsis baronii which was fried to the ground mercilessly by the freeze. Also near several Howea seedlings that were scorched badly. What a trooper!! Too bad it will 100 years before it makes a trunk at the rate it's growing.

Cyrtostachys renda x elegans

A hybrid version of renda going around, that seems to have a bit more cold hardiness. Not quite the same bright red as renda, but still very striking, and would be a great addition if it lived here in coastal SoCal. Sacrificed a seedling outside over the past few months to provide some data. Good news: it was perfectly happy under 55F, unlike renda. It was actually happy all the way down to about 46-47F. Once it hit 41-44F, it promptly snuffed it over the span of two nights. A slightly larger one might have done better.

Damage already
by Than- 2 replies

On Friday my Terminalia Catappa was fine. Last night temperature dropped to like 8-9 C (46-47 F). Saturday was windy, with northern wind. Maximum temperature reached 14 C (57 F). I have seen Terminalias in central Rajasthan where night temperatures in winter go lower than 45 F; they drop their leaves but in spring they produce new ones. Mine though looks like it's burnt. Do you think it's gone? Should I put it indoors tonight? Wind has stopped but temperatures will fall to 45 F tonight. It's in a pot. The soil is dry. The pot is inside a larger pot (the green one) with some rocks between the two pots to stop the tree from falling over from the wind.

Dictyocaryum lamarckianum
by BobSDCA- 7 replies

Given the freezing temperatures on the east coast and south U.S., I thought I should update some information on the January 2007 cold in California! I had grown this seedling Dictyocaryum for two years, it had four leaves and was a very slow grow, but put out a new leaf each year! It was declining with the cold we had before the freeze, but the temperature of 29.5F in the yard for 3 hours really finished it off. It died within a month after the freeze. This isn't the best microclimate for the palm - another part of the yard received 31F for about an hour, but the area where the Dictyocaryum was growing had a 50% canopy cover that provided good light for the palm. W…

23 one gallon plants, 1 yr old, 1-2 leaves, 5" height, saw 32F, under patio cover (2x2's spaced 1" apart), no wind exposure, frost at least one night, looked good until recent latent damage (fungus taking over probably, but no burn from freeze), lost 6 plants, others look really good. Spraying daconil and copper fungicide!
