At low to mid 40s F, 3 leaf seedlings germinated last spring began to show copperish areas on the leaf tips that covered up to 50% of the leaf area and later turned necrotic, but the stem shows no damage.

29 degrees-no damage visible (yet) no frost 33 degrees- Nothing as well. no frost Keeping in mind that damage can show up well into the future, I was surprised to see no damage at all to an exposed champagne palm. It has about 5-5.5' of trunk and carries 5-6 fronds. It is (or was) flowering.

Under partial canopy of my Bismarck, 5-6 ft OA (about a 7 gallon size) about 20% burn to exposed horizontal leaves after 29 and 31. Definitely a fast growing keeper!

Three plants total: one seedling in a pot under cover, one 2-ft, first winter in ground, one 5-ft, second winter in ground. Lowest low 31, dry. Those in ground noticeably more yellow than before the severe cold, although they were already somewhat yellow. These are planted in a south-facing area close to a garage wall which radiates heat after sundown. Seedling looks fine.

Even though had one of these totally defoliate year after year in Thousand Oaks, where it would routinely get down to 27F, it always came back fine. This year have a 4' tall split seedling in a raised bed with slight protection from a slatted wood awning nearby showed no damage to temps 27F for 5 hours.

Is anyone growing this in Central Texas, South Louisiana, North Florida or any other place that gets freezes into the low 20sF every 4-5 years? What are your experiences with the cold hardiness of this palm? Thanks, Jonathan

I'm pretty sure my Royal Palms died...

We have several royal palms in our yard and I think that this past winter killed over half of them. We are relatively new homeowner and they were here when we purchased the house. This past winter in Central FL (Brevard County) had several days in a row when the temp was not out of the 30's. About 8 or so of our trees now look like nubs. The center piece broke off and the top portion of what is left is mushy (like it is rotten inside). Could we cut the tree down to where it is solid and would it grow back from that or are they a total loss? Thanks for any information - Sandy

Is this palm dead?

Hello. I live in East Tennessee and about 4 years ago I planted a couple of Windmill Palms out in my pool area. This past Christmas we had a string of 3 or 4 days where it was very cold (around zero). I noticed about a month ago that all of the fronds were brown on the ends and some were completely brown. I cut the ones off that were completely brown and cut most of the brown from the ones that still had some green. I'm trying to figure out if these trees are dead, which would absolutely suck if that were the case. I'm posting a few pics here of one of the palms in hopes that someone can advise me on what I should do. Hopefully, there is hope here. I really don't want to…

It's hot in GA

Hi I'm a fairly new member and somewhat new to palms even though my wife says it looks like we live in Florida with all the tropical plants around my house. The temps have been outrageous so far and we have not even been hit with July yet. I just planted another windmill Palm medium sized and did a good job except the sun got really bright and hot as I was cutting the pot away. The roots were only exposed for about 30 seconds because everything was prepped prior but now it is in transplant shock from too much sunlight. I have a makeshift roof over it and will probably leave it for about 3 weeks taking it off every now and then to let it acclimate to the bright sun. Mine …

2022 January 2022 Florida Freeze Report 1 2

This topic is started to document the cold damage, or hopefully lack thereof, due to the cold spell. Initially, it looks like most of the damage done locally was due to frost. As you get outside of town, the damage can get pretty severe on the "high-9b/low-10a" palms that have become more common due to the advent of Lethal Bronzing. I'll begin with this photo I captured west of the airport on Medulla Rd. The damage didn't even wait for the warmup to manifest. For my own garden, I'm going to wait until it warms up to do my report. There may be palms that look undamaged now that will show damage after the next three days go over 80F. There may also be palms tha…

I have 2 which took 3 weeks of sub zero temps with at least 2 excursions to -4c/24.8v and 2 lower dips to -5c/23f. Some white spotting on the smaller one, the larger one looks a lot healthier. Regards Andy.

Six-foot jubaeas: Two nights fourteen degrees, 14 hours below freezing, numerous nights below 20, fifteen nights below 25...drumroll...NO DAMAGE. OK, tiniest bronzing of distal leaflets, ONLY on oldest 2-3 fronds. Ten other jubaeas, from straps in planter to 8 feet, no protection, very light- to no apparent damage, almost two weeks since coldest weather.

I put a very small JxB in the ground in 2006. It had no characteristic leaves on it before winter hit. We had a low of 16. It was covered with a piece of plastic to keep it's head dry. In April one deformed spear grew out. No spear pulls. That's it. No other damage. Amazing! It's growing like a charm now.

For some reason I have aquired at least 5 of these from good 1 gal size to hefty 5's. Some sheet covered, some not. 4 nights under 30F, 2 of those at 26F can't see any damage. Small ones seem more susceptable to root rot than cold...

No Damage.... except the oldest leaf is on it's way out now about a week after the freeze. It was about time anyway so not a major issue. A new leaf opened last week and even it shows no damage.
