Anybody got any info on these? Got to be pretty cold hardy considering the altitudes they grow. Maybe another Chamaedorea for 9a/8b climates?

15G, burned severely 23.6F under shade cloth Feb/March 2006, but recovered. Was brought in after the first (advective) night of the freeze ~22-23F. Similar damage as 2006, but as the temps warmed up it started losing "trunks". I was holding out hope with the radicalis genes, but it seems to see damage similar to potted seifrizii. Toast now.

5' plant in ground is next to sensor that read 29 on saturday night. No major damage, upper 1/3 of newest leaf which opened up early December is a little crispy and some minor spotting on rest of frond. Oldest fronds seem for the most part untouched. Plant is on north facing wall with slight overhang on roof but is surround by Ferns and other plants. Leaves however are openly exposed to air

Chamaerops humilis

I don't see a thread for Chamaerops so here's my contribution. Green form, around 15 gal size, in ground, subject to 7 days where it only got above freezing once for a few hours (during the PNW Arctic Outbreak around Christmas of 2021 through New Years. Ultimate low of 16f. Zero apparent damage, and that was a month ago. I have a smaller one in the ground, around 1 gallon size, very small. It was covered with an upside down tote box and no heat. Also no apparent damage. I don't know what the limits of this palm are but I honestly expected some kind of damage to show. I'm impressed.

Chamaerops Humilis, 15 degree hard freeze.
by Ed Askew- 1 reply

So far, we have had a colder than normal winter in South Mississippi. We saw 15 degrees F in early January. I know it's not over. I have over 100 sabal palms, both S. Louisiana and S. Palmetto. 8 of the S. Palmettos are over 20 feet tall. The larger sabals have gone dormant, and there is a bit of a singe on the tips of the fronds, not unusual. The rest are totally unfazed. I have 3 Chamaerops; the largest is about 6 feet tall. They all have some freeze damage. The lower fronds are all brown and about 1/3 of the upper fronds have some browning. These palms saw 9 degrees F one winter and were totally defoliated, but usually they will hang on to their fronds down t…

Have both C nana and C hainensis in yard, against house (though still ext cold there- 27F). Neither even the least bit touched- C nana is flowering. Just 6" away a Chamaedorea metallica completely killed, and Dypsis albofarinosa seeding fried a bit. Nearby C oblongatas and C hooperianas torched pretty badly and Basselinia gracilis killed outright.

Stretched specimen, planted spring?summer? 2006. Newest leaf is shorter, so in-ground height now about 4 ft. No direct canopy, but in the shadow of a 30-ft strelitzia nicolai, morning sun, afternoon shade. Lowest low 31, dry. Oldest leaf, which was already fading, looks dryer. Newest leaf (yes, only two!) appears unchanged.

Small in ground palm which stands about 24" high. The "official" air temperature on my weather station (at about 4-5 ft above ground ) was 34F. But, due to the still air, I measured 29F at ground level. This palm was in the open and not exposed to frost. Certer portions of skyward facing leaf surfaces on several leaves were damaged.

The coconut palm in the below photos was the first one I discovered when I moved to Highlands County, Florida, in 1997 (and inland county situated equal distance from the Atlantic Ocean to its east and and Gulf of Mexico to its west). I've been tracking its growth ever since then. The palm is located approximately 10 miles NE of the small town of Lake Placid, Florida (I live 2 miles east of town). But on the morning of January 5, 2001, I experienced the coldest freeze (radiational) in the 11 years living here. That morning my low temperature bottomed out at 22 degrees F (-5.5 C) with heavy frost in the open yard. Archbold Biological Station, 9 miles to my south, rec…
