Sabal causiarum

Here's a Sabal causiarum from the same Seattle garden as the heavily damaged Brahea edulis. It was planted as a small plant in the early 90's. It has never had really heavy damage, (this is the worst I've seen it) and benefits somewhat from being surrounded by pavement and rock. As for the ID, well we can only hope the owner got it right. It doesn't look right for a lot of the better known hardy Sabal species, though. Here again is the weather for that neighborhood during our big freeze. The coldest night was about 16 degrees but it was below freezing for a long time and snowed almost two feet. Magnolia Weather Station History

Sabal Domingenisis in Clarksburg, Maryland

Sabal Domingenisis faces west, growing inbetween two Sabal minors (North Carolina ecotype.) They grow in between two homes and garages, wind from north west creates a wind tunnel but it’s usually slightly sheltered in general. We had the snow and it stayed below freezing for many days at a time. The lowest we got during the cold snap was 17f in the day, 3f that night. Coldest, it was, recorded: 7f, 3f 5f 9f nighttime lows I’d guess the daytimes were in between 17-26f It seems to be rougher than other years but remember the snow cover insulated the roots for a few weeks. Here are 2 early fall pictures Now here’s two photos I took 15 minutes ago: Thanks for reading !

6' overall height and in ground 3½ years. Unprotected with some live oak canopy. One week after consecutive nights of 9°F and 16°F with ice and snow and nearly 110 consecutive hours below freezing. 50% of foliage damaged and newest spear is currently opening (since Friday) so definitely will survive.

24F low, no frost, 15 gal sized planted away from house and wrapped in blanket with box over top, virtually no damage. 3 nights below 28F. No true overhead protection, planted in shade of fence. Edit: Minor discoloration showing now to part of outer fronds, still bright green interior fronds. Looks like a box covering at 24F was enough. (no heat source was given). Maybe 15% damage.

Since no one has posted temps for this palm, I thought I'd show my brother's palms growing in Kansas City, MO (Zone 6a). Temps: His low this winter was -3F but he had 13 days in single digits which is when all the damage happens. Protection: Palms were buried in mulch. On coldest events heavy plastic was thrown over them. No lights or external heating.

Sabal palmetto cold damage
by Jono Miller- 5 replies

In the wake of the early 2010 winter, I'm looking for information and photographs of cold damaged cabbage palms. In particular, I'm interested in 1) the fate of palms that had been burdened with snow loads, 2) symptoms of cold damage in mature palms, and 3) symptoms of damage in seedling and juvenile palms. Photographs combined with location information and what is known about the tree (transplanted or grown in place) would be especially helpful. I may be retracing paths others have trod, but I'm trying to understand the original distribution of Sabal palmetto in the Southeast before they were extensively relocated. It seems obvious that mature Sabal palms can survive…

Low of 14F. 14 days straight of below freezing temps. 50% overhead protection. ~50 Plants in pots (3gal). No damage. One planted in ground as a 5 gal last year with no overhead protection showed 50% leaf damage and the spear pulled. Pushed up what was left of the spear last month and is pushing up a new leaf.

I have 2 of this palm, born from seeds some years ago, one in the ground is 3 leaves strap and had no problem after 2 nights at -9° C (15 F) and snow, it's under canopy of a chamerops (damaged to some leaves) Anothe one in a pot is badly damaged after -7° C (19° F) , expecially to the recent leaves, dried by the cold, maybe because the roots are more exposed in a pot?? Before: and after the cold spell: ciao

3 seedlings, largest about 3' tall overall, in lawn with no protection... already all three shown frost damage from previous nights where temps only got down to 35F... all exposed to 27F (possibly a few degrees cooler) for 5hours and showing pretty severe leaf damage... though newest leaves still look viable. Now that it's been 8 days, I can tell all leaves will be lost on all 3 seedlings... but all have newly emerging leaves visible down in their dark little holes, so fingers are crossed! Pretty much dead now... and this was the healthiest of the three... ouch. Also in this photo are seedlings of S etonia (foreground) and S domingensis (just behind the yapa kindli…

Sago Palm Damage - HELP
by Mrtommy03- 1 reply

Hello, I have 2 sagos in my backyard (about 10 years old). I am in north Texas, and if you didn't hear, we had what I refer to as "snowpocolypse" a few months back. I tried to cover my sagos as best I could, but it was sub zero temps for multiple days in a row... Not fun. Anyways, all of the fans turned brown and I thought they died. Then came late spring and early summer, and tons of Pups sprouted out near the base... But nothing on top. I have since harvested 4 or 5 of the Pups, and they are doing great. But here we are in mid July, still no new fronds coming out the top, but still more and more Pups are sprouting. Question: Will it ever spawn new fron…

Six Winter Damage/Survival Surprises

In West Palm Beach, I experienced several nights in the 30s; 8 out of 9 nights in the 30s during one stretch. Coldest night was 33. I feel the cold damage experienced was more about how long the cold lasted than the absolute minimum temperature as my garden has experienced 30degF a few times in the past. Now that it is hot, sunny, with daily rainfall; rapid growth and death are being observed. Below are cold damage and survival that I did not expect. Bactris gasipaes In twenty years I have never seen any winter effects. This year everyone lost its spear. All but one have survived. Dypsis fibrosa Spear came out early January. No sign of survival until las…

Snow made Sylvester’s turn brown

Hello everyone. A couple of weeks ago here in south Georgia. We got about 3 to 4 inches of snow and freezing temperatures at night as low as 20°. About a week later after the snow was gone my two Sylvester trees were completely brown. I’ve noticed a couple of miles from me someone has Sylvester’s and theirs only have a little browning versus mine. My Sylvester’s are completely brown. I have a picture attached. By the looks of my picture, can anyone tell me if my Palms are still alive? Or is there anything I need to do? I would appreciate advice from anyone that can help. Thank you.

Some are OK, some are dying!

I recently moved into a house in the bay area, CA. There are about a dozen palms around the house. I have no experience with them. To my eyes, many are not doing well. I even found two dead trees, with trunk in the ground. I have pictures taken. I asked my neighbors and someone at Lowes garden department. They mentioned 2014 winter has been cold, so it can be due to freeze damage. The question I have is why these palms 100 feet from each other, but they look very different. Some are OK, some are dying! Palm (1) looks OK. Palm (3) is dying. So far, I had only put palm food in March. What else should I do to save them?

From January 2nd to January 12th South Florida experience the longest period of nights in the 30's and 40's since the 1940s. I live about 300 yards from the Atlantic (I can't see it) so it never got below freezing but my plants and trees got burned pretty bad. Here are a few photos...
