   I have a concern and question. Here in South Louisiana, a few weeks back we got into the TEEN temperatures. Mine along with most of other peoples queen palms in their yards all seem to be brown and barely green. What is the best solution to getting these back healty and green again? Will this take years? I have about 8 of these planted behind a fence for my pool viewing area and its going to look horrible this summer. Any ideas how to spruce this up for the summer time? Anything special I can do? I have about $2,000 invested in these trees. Any information can help. Thanks William

   So being the palm dweeb that I am, last night I was researching the lowest annual temperatures for Baltimore (my hometown) and I realized that the lowest temperatures were recorded at BWI airport. The airport is cooler than my location and I was curious what the same temperatures were in areas closer to me. So on the days where the lowest temperatures were recorded, I searched the temperatures at the weather stations closest to me and these were my findings for the past 20 years: 2019: 8° 2018: 5° 2017: 12° 2016: 12° 2015: 4° 2014: 6° 2013: 15° 2012: 15° 2011: 15° 2010: 16° 2009: 10° 2008: 16° 2007: 12° 2006: 16° 2005: 13° 2004: 8° 2…

   This was its 3rd winter in the ground here in Myrtle Beach, zone 8b. The first 2 winters it really didn't get tested as temps were basically in the 9b range. This past winter it went through freezing rain and a couple dips to 19F unprotected. First pic is before the storm, 2nd is the aftermath of the ice, and 3rd is the recovery pic from today (4/7/22).

   4 foot strap leaf in raised planter bed for 2 years. 27F--no damage. Was previously more sensitive and brown spotted during Winter. But this year finally started growing much more quickly. Just a more established plant, perhaps.

   Syagrus botryophora 15 gal size plant, no pinnate leaves yet, in ground, planted next to a dwarf banana, no direct overhead canopy. 24.1F, no frost, covered w/ a sheet. 5% leaf damage after a few days. After 5 days now 30% leaf burn is being observed.

   Have a tree I have had now in two different yards (was transplanted last year) 10' over all, with 1' clear trunk (did not transplant all that well)- finally re-established and growing new leaves.. totally unprotected during 27F cold snap (5 hours+ at this temp)... tips of all leaves burned significantly Oops... looked at palm next day and was hurt a lot worse than I thought.. all existing leaves dead... but still hopeful.

    HAve a seeling of this species in a raised planter box 3' tall and plant is about 6' tall over all, with lower half of plant below shade cloth, but leaves fully exposed to cold (27F for 5 hours +)... no damage

    Burning/spotting/yellowing up to 20-40% on trees in ground 15g to 20' size. Similar damage to 15g potted trees with blanket around trunk. Still working on the temp numbers, but 16 out of 18 days below freezing. Most days 12+ hours below freezing, rebounding to mid-40's. Official lows in Madera and Fresno in low 20's. Some frost every day, but nowhere near as heavy as normal 28-32F freezes. No overhead canopy.

    Mine is trunking and 14 feet tall overall. 26.5F minimum and there's only minor damage to the oldest leaf. Rest of palm looks great. Several days have now passed and my S. sancona has considerably more brown spotting showing up. Half of its fronds are freckled with 1/4'' brown spots. It will be a couple of years before those leaves are replaced.

    I have 2 Syagrus X Juebae growing in ground for 2yrs. Both had gone pinnate this past summer. They survived last winter w/ overhead protection. In the low 20s for many days. They pulled through OK. This year no overhead protection and saw low 23F or so with heavy frost. Within a few weeks they went into rapid decline 1 plant spear pulled the other doesn't look to healthy it might make it ,we'll see. I'm coming to the conclusion these won't make it here in Pensacola Fl. it's to bad they are such a neat palm, they look quite different at an early age than the rest of my hybrids. On the other hand both my JXS took the last 2 winters like a champ.

    Just for report that small SyagrusX mataforme (S. vagans X S. coronata) F2 yet with entire long leaves, growing exposed didnt passed my winter with minnima of -6º C. on july 9th 207.- Something possitive for the specie that another ones planted a bit more protected defoliated in the expossed leaves but are still alive and recovering quickly now.- So, the limit range must be close to the minus 6º C.- , too resistent considerating the origing of this rare palm.- Another thing, as many hybrids, this specie is considerably fast growing when planted in the ground and not problem with the droughtness.-

    We’ve had our Sylvester palms 2 years. We had a freeze of mid 20’s for a couple days. 1 out of the 3 started sprouting new fronds at the beginning of summer. We know 2 are dead 🥲. 1 has no new fronds but still has its old fronds with green on it. It’s only on the stalk closer to the truck. Is this considered dead?

    Texas Freeze Damage Question

    Last winter after Hurricane Harvey we had a bad freeze in Galveston. It damaged my Bismarkia and Queen palm. The Bismarkia is fine now but the Queen palm isn't. It put out two fronds out about half way and then more new fronds are a foot long or less. The two larger fronds are turning brown at the tips and no getting any longer. I think everything is stuck. Is the such a thing as "crown crowding" or something and what can I do?

    weatherbug waetherstation about a mile away read 31 as low. I placed a digital acurite suction cup type on the ground in the middle of the lawn. It read 27 as the low. Frost all over the lawns and roofs. So far, my insulation for the palms looks like it worked. Jubaeopsis no damage, Dypsis lutescens no damage. Unprotected Alocasia looks like wilted lettuce. Suprisingly, Hass avocado looks fine.

    The dead Foxtail fronds are slow to fall off.

    We are concerned about our Foxtails. This was the second harsh winter for these Palms. Although, they keep pushing up spears of new growth, the damaged, dried up fronds on the bottom of the Foxtails are slow to fall away. The cylindrical boots that these dead fronds are attached to are still green and healthy looking. Usually, the frond and boot wither together and fall off as one piece. Should we be concerned? Is anyone familiar with this situation. We are well aware that the Foxtails are self-cleaning and should not be tampered with to accelerate the process. Here is a photo of one of our Foxtails.

    This past Texas freeze

    The past vortex greatly affected parts of Texas by damaging palm trees and tropical plants. my Mandeville was in a shelter at the time there was a heater in the shelter, but it could not keep up with the vortex and therefore froze in the shelter damaging them. If anyone got any ideas how i can help them recover and please notify me. I will keep on updating the progress of recovery.

    HI all - wanted to get some folks thoughts on a Sylvester date palm that I planted about a year ago around a new pool in north Houston. Before winter hit, it looked like things were going well and tree was getting established. Then came winter... coldest we've seen in the past decade here. All my palms which were planted at the same time last year took it pretty hard.... lost a lot of leaves on my 3 mule palms but they've come back strong and green. My two Sylvesters took it the worst with both basically losing all of their leaves. One has started to come back (attached a picture and you can see the green crown coming out).
