Hi Ya'll. I saw a couple of threads about some damage of the palms and cycads at the Huntington but I wanted to start one that focused on the fun we had at our annual Palm Society of Southern California Banquet. I'll start off with Bill (BS man about thorns), conquering the Phoenix dactylifera. Bill was lookin for dates here and in the LA Xpress. ::

Flying Down The Amazon RiverI
by amazondk- 16 replies

I went on a little business trip to Parintins yesterday. Parintins is the host of the yearly folk festival the last three days of June which draws a crowd as big as the city. The city has about 125,000 inhabitants and the festival receives about this number people to see the show and participate in the party. Parintins is on the island of Tupinabarana which runs along the south side of the Amazon River. The area was actually colonized by Tupi indians which moved in fleeing due to pressure from the Europeans in other parts of colonial Brazil hundreds of years ago. The city lies on the Varzea, or flood plane of the Amazon. It has been raining a lot here which you can …

According to an earlier news report I heard that the Citrus growers down there have taken a big hit. Hope this was a mistake or exaggeration? Good luck to all of you with palm nurseries or gardens. Big gale here right now and limbs are a coming off trees on the bright side it will save on pruning. A mature Sycamore widbreak has saved my garden. A.pseudoplatanus is Not my favourite tree but at times like this I shall forgive and forget all those wret6ched seedlings that pop up everywhere. Regardez Juan

Rainy Season in Amazonas
by amazondk- 21 replies

I took a few shots with my cell phone while over in Itacoatiara, 260 kms from Manaus, yesterday. I guess they did not come out too bad for a phone camera. It has been raining a lot and water buffalos seem quite happy. Looking out at the Amazon River during lunch. The main channel runs around 300 feet deep here. The vessel on the far side is a LPG tanker waiting for a pilot to take it up to Manaus. The Amazon River is the main highway of the region. These pictures were from the good part of the trip. Some 150 kms down the road, still 137 kms from Manaus my gas pump went dead and left me stranded on the side of the highway. I was going up a hill when this happene…

On the UK Oasis site there is an interesting idea about why A. cunninghamiana grows on the cool mountaintops above 3000 feet with the Antarctic beeches (or at least, young ones do) See the thread marked Nothofagus moorei in UK? http://www.ukoasis.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=3538

Travels with Colin

Colin (palmsforpleasure) spent the last few days travelling around SE Queensland, prior to presenting a travelogue to the Brisbane Palm and Cycad Society tonight. His lovely wife Denise accompanied him, and he spent time travelling with Wal, myself and Mike (newcal) to some of the nicer gardens and areas in this neck of the woods. The weather was great, we saw plenty of great palms and enjoyed many a beer and BBQ together. Here's a few photos of our trip to Springbrook on the Gold Coast hinterland. This is a mountain plateau at about 4000ft elevation, and contains some great rainforest, along with three native palm species. Colin and Denise arrive...bearing gifts! …

I know its early days yet but judging from the enjoyment we all experienced from that fantastic event and the excitement that many non atendees picked up on from the pics I reckon there exists the real danger that the CR could be oversubscribed; remember that sheer logistics must require minimum AND maximum numbers. Plan early, dont file it but pin a reminder on your office, study or bedroom wall. Time comes round soon enough. Regardez Jon

Looking for land around Manaus
by amazondk- 18 replies
- 1.6k views
I am in the process of selling some property I have here and will use a part of the proceeds to buy some forest land. I mentioned this on a previous thread. I don't know if this qualifies as travel log, but I am posting it here. The area I am looking at is actually quite close to Manaus, but the access is via a road which intersects the main highway north to Venezuela and is 21 kms of asphalt and 30 kms of dirt. The prospects are that a lot of the dirt road will be paved in the near future. The worst case is for a good dirt road with gravel. This area has good cell phone reception, radio, and TV from Manaus as it is really only 20 kms or so from the city in a direct…

OK, after four days of freezing temps, I decided I needed a tropical infusion. Time to continue the trip. Yogya: We arrived in Yogya about two weeks after the 6.2 magnitude earthquake just offshore. This was a devistating earthquake with almost 6000 people killed, 36,000+ injured and >1 million left homeless. Yogya has a special place in my wife's heart and mine as it is a wonderful city and it is where we met while attending the major University there. We had planned on staying for a week, but only stayed three days. Needless to say we didn't take many landscape pictures here as our primary concern was to check on the welfare of our friends there. So, let'…

My final palm expedition of 2006. Here are some interesting or unusual (for our area) palms growing around town and county. I already posted the various Brahea armata in another thread. A row of Washingtonia filifera lining the old driveway to the winery where I work. Normally, I would not consider Washingtonia particularly interesting, but this winery dates back to the 1870's. I am not sure however, how old these are. The driveway is ~1/4 mile long. A typical hazy winter day in the valley. This guy has brought in a bunch of specimen trees.... Yet lives in a mobile home. One of those trees probably cost more than the trailer. There is also a…

Here are a few shots of some palms in Manaus and immediate vicinity. I went out and took a few today. I will get some more to add tomorrow, and later. The main terminal at Eduardo Gomes International Airport, the ponds are full of turtles and local fish like the tambaqui. Estrada da Cidade Nova, a main street close to my house. There was a time when the city was into planting Oil Palms, they have switched now to Royals - will be shown in a later image.

OK, it's hardly an exotic location, but I thought it would be worth posting a few pics of my October visit. This is an outside view of the larger greenhouse (biome), which is themed as "humid tropics" This is the slightly smaller biome, which is host to "warm temperate" species. A waterfall inside the humid tropics biome, which is a major source of humidity for the biome.

I am planning another trip to one of our nature reserves where there are quite a few stands of M. flexuosa. This triggered my mind regarding an article I wrote some time ago. Cocos at Sea World Orlando
by SoLando- 9 replies

When I arrived at SeaWorld today, I was pleasently surprised with some fat@$$ foxtails when you pay for parking. I couldn't get a good picture (all blurry) since I had to keep moving. But, they were some FAT dudes. Looked great. SeaWorld's coconuts look amazing. There were some really tall ones. And, it seemed like there was a cocos on every corner! I was in heaven. I'm sorry for the terrible quality, I took these pictures from my cellphone. It only let me take a picture of a few (it was not being cooperative!) and for the others it said "photo failed" or something like that. I was TICKED. I tried to get a pic of a REALLY tall coconut, but my phone did not work with m…

Royal Palm Ranch
by amazondk- 5 replies

I drive by this ranch all the time as I go over to work on our business in Itacoatiara, 260 kms from Manaus. This time I decided to stop and take a picture. I think it has a great setting surrounded by forest, babaçu palms (Attaleas) with some nice royal palms in the yard. The road is on a high crest at this point and looks down at the place. You can also notice our winter weather pattern sky. It seems the rainy season has started. We get a few days like this and then 3 or 4 sunny ones. It is nice to see the temperature go down a bit. dk
