Tour Sunken Gardens
by junglegalfla- 27 replies

Took a stroll through Sunken Gardens yesterday. When I uploaded my pics, I realized I had pics from earlier this year as well as 2004 so I'll post them all. They're equally beautiful. If you ever visit the city, be sure to visit! A really blurry pic but this is the entrance to the gardens so you can see what beauty awaits inside!

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
by Jeff in St Pete- 34 replies
- 1.3k views
After spending a few days at the Arenal Volcano, we drove to Monteverde and took a tour of the Cloud Forest Reserve. The forest was not living up to its name the day we were there though, it was bright and sunny! Monteverde was settled in the 1950's by Quakers from the United States. It is still a very remote place to get to. Driving up the dirt road to Monteverde

Last week a friend visited me from the States and wanted to see a volcano. I flew to San Jose and met her at the airport where we rented a car and drove to Arenal for a couple days and then we drove up higher into the mountains to the Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve. Here is our cottage at the base of the Arenal Volcano. We stayed at a place called Lomas del Volcán.

Oct 14-19. $278 round trip, Orlando to Kahului! (must-purchase by Aug 6, available thru Travelocity, Orbitz. Tip was from Airfare Watchdog. This fare was NOT available through ATA or SWA). Now to figure out the details. Great excuse to pursue that all-vegan low-fat diet so as not to look like a blimp at the beach.

Borneo
by OldNed- 9 replies

Am traveling to Borneo (Sabah only) in a couple of weeks on a birding tour. Most of our time will be spent checking out birds but, never having been there, we don't know much about what other stuff to be on the lookout for. I'll try to get pix of palms and other plants...also Orangs and other mammals, reptiles etc. Any suggestions?

Both rivers merge at the mouth. They are not so long rivers but together they provide drainage to a 250 hectare mangrove near the mouth, where most fish species come in season for sometime. Here are a few pictures from the neibouring area the river, in winter. The water gets clayey during the rainy season and gets blue again during summer when the sea waters prevail.

An hour of Golden Light on the Equator
by amazondk- 26 replies
- 1.7k views
Yesterday I drove round trip from Boa Vista, Roraima to Rorainoplis some 300 kms to the south to check on our business. On the return trip the skies were dramatic with the northern hemisphere equatorial winter storm clouds. I could see off to the west that the sun would break through the clouds and that the light would be ideal for pictures. It was about 4:30 PM or so when the sun started to appear. Since sunset always is around 6:00 at this latitude, about 2 degrees North, the light is golden at this hour. I was driving through an area where the mountains start to pop up out of the tropical plain. In areas the forest gives way to savanna and the views are great. A…

China-some palm observations
by MASOALA JASON- 16 replies
- 1.5k views
My wife and I just returned from two months of traveling throughout China. Here are some photos of palms and things related. Here are Areca catechu in front of a residence in the south of Hainan island in the very southwest of China-in the back was a huge grove of the same palms to supply the local town with betel nut. While in Hainan island my wife and I took up betel nut chewing. The effects are similiar to a stiff red bull and vodka, but the seeds do leave your teeth red. In the photo is an entire seed and one halved. Usually one only puts a quarter of the seed mixed with the Piper sp. leaf and the lime catalyst-that is the white powder shown.

Visit New Orleans and Play a New Game
by Kathryn- 38 replies

I took pictures almost two years ago hoping to be able to show the progress after a while. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much progress in the Lakeview area, near the 17th Street Canal levee break. When Eddie was in town last month, we drove around to check things out. We had an ice chest of beer and played a new game: How high did the water get here? Here are two that have been renovated and a palm that recovered nicely. Hint: Just look for the waterline. This one was very close to the levee break.

Walt's Palms and Tropicals
by Walt- 27 replies

Welcome to Walt's Palms and Tropicals, located just two miles N.E. of of Lake Placid, Florida. The property comprises 5.60 acres of native slash pines, scrub oaks, Dihoon holly, red bay trees, swamp bay trees, Sabal etonia, Serenoa repens (saw palmetto), Sabal palmetto, lots of tree choking wild muscadine grape vines and weeds. Also, I've planted more than 100 species of palms and other tropical and subtropical trees, shrubs, and plants, etc. As such, I've effectively screened out (he he) all of my neighbors and have fairly good privacy. My property also backs up to state preserve land on it's north border. The climate at Walt's Palms and Tropicals is a USDA 9b. In …

Beautiful downtown St Petersburg FL
by Jeff in St Pete- 29 replies
- 2.2k views
I was in the Tampa Bay area during the first week of June and spent a day walking around St Petersburg with a friend. Downtown St Pete sure has changed since I first moved to the area in 1994. The city used to empty out after 5 pm and it was mostly retired folks living there. Now there are tons of new housing, new stores, sidewalk cafes, etc and people have moved back downtown again. It's a great place to live and one of the most beautiful cities in FL (IMHO). Phoenix dactylifera

The Palmetum Of Santa Cruz

This is somewhat overdue from my April visit. Carlo gave my wife and I a great tour and I was able to take many photos on the way. You can see the entire gallery at Palm Haven, along with other galleries or you can go directly to this gallery here. As with my previous photo tours, I will show a selection of palms and other plants in alphabetical order by genus. Acoelorrhaphe wrightii - this picture has featured in another thread recently. I was particularly impressed with this species, as I'm not usually a fan of fan, but this clump is gorgeous. Acrocomia crispa Adonidia merrillii Aechmea blanchetiana

Daintree Rainforest

Here are some pics of the Daintree rainforest north of cairns and Port Douglas. It's a beautiful world heritage area. Enjoy The ferry to cross the Daintree River. There is no bridge. There are crocs in that river. Don't fall off... This is from a lookout point back towards the mouth of the Daintree. Originally they were going to put a town at the mouth. I don't know how they would have done that.

Heading to Africa in 3 months
by Justin- 8 replies
- 1.9k views
I'll be in Cape Town for 5 days. I'm definitely going to Kirstenbosch, and I'll also be hitting the Grootbos Nature Reserve near Hermanus. I'll be in Botswana for 9 days. We'll be on Safari, but of course I'll be able to see all of the flora in the area as well. I'll be in the Victoria Falls area for 2 days, not on safari, so I'll have a bit of an opportunity to go see some plant things if there's something worth going to see. Lastly, I'll be in Rwanda for 3 days, and I don't have a clue what the flora is like there or if there is some really cool and unusual stuff. I welcome all ideas and past experiences. Thanks in advance.
