Bali's Gardens
by RainForestt Robert- 11 replies

The March 2007 issue on Garden Design Magazine has a nice feature on Bali and it's gardens. I know that it is a favorite of Paul's. The article goes into some detail on what is perceived to be Bali Style, garden wise. The principles of this type of tropical design are applicable to me and I would like to incorporate some of them into my garden. They are Stone decorations, Offerings and Shrines, Dramatic Entryways, The Bale, Still Pools, Deep Roof Overhangs, Carved Stones, Large Cisterns and Quiet, All Pervasive Water. The same issue also covered "100 plants we love". I was disappointed that not one palm or cycad was mention. Come on Garden Design. Will make some…

My neighbor's daughter was visiting Covina CA and she offered to donate for auction a week stay at their beach house here in Brazil, to help a local California health institution. 3 nice couples from SoCal won the bid and so they came last week for a Carnaval stay. My neighbor asked me to help translating and so our family enjoyed the weekend visiting in their company. Here are a few pictures: Pier:

I would like to share some photos my brother (geonomaDude) and I took in our trip , in which we were looking for Chamaedorea seed. First, we went to Barra Honda nearby terrains and Quebrada Honda (a small town). Some meters away from the Barra Honda National Park we found a rattan palm, which we don't know... We couldn't enter the park, because it closes 4:00 PM and we reached it at 3:50 PM. Here are some pics: Photo 1: As we didn't found any mature seed source we decided to go to Cañas and stay there for the night. At the morning we went to Tilarán and reached Arenal lake. In the roadsides we found many chamaedorea and astrocaryum. Here are some pics:…

A tropical garden

Last Friday I took the opportunity to visit the garden of a cactus and succulent afficionado. He had an area that he intends to plant a number of palms and wanted some input into the number of palms, spacing etc. On the way to his place I passed one of the older churches here in Trinidad. The surrounding countryside is mainly the remnants of sugar cane plantations. The roads are bordered by teak trees

Here are a few shots from Google Earth of the our area looking up the Negro River. The Negro River is the second largest river in Amazonia and has blackish gold water which results from organic matter as the river spreads out over the northwestern corner of Amazonas state reachin up to Colombia. The islands resulted from material washed down from the Guyana shield. The area of the Anavilhanas is now a Federal Ecological Reserve of 350,000 hectares. In addition up the river a bit to the left side is the Jau National Park which is the largest park in Amazonia. The river is lined with white sand beaches. During the low water season, September to December, beaches appear…

Coastline

Here in Northeastern Brazil coastline, the vast majority of the population lives near the water. Most capital cities are located along the coast around beaches and harbours, where the climate is mild, breezy and humid, unlike in the warm and drier countryside. Here are some recent pictures of one of my favorite beaches in Sirinhaém, at Guadalupe point and also near our house. I'd love to see pictures of everyone's neighboring coastline or fav beaches too. Please let's surf, snorkel and swim...

All the palms along the road that I see twice a day driving to work are now starting to look a little better. Some are finally dieing , its so sad to see a palm that must be many years old and survived a few direct hits from cyclones go up to the arms of the little baby Jesus  But there are so many ..

Arenga australasica in habitat .
by aussiearoids- 9 replies

Drove down to take these pics today as it was nice and overcast . There are many of these palms visible from the road , but not many places to pull over and stop . It is a very narrow strip practically on the beach , with a steep hill covered in rainforest and some rocky cliffs . This area was hit very hard by Cyclone Larry , still lots of damaged fronds and smashed trunks .

Brazil nuts, Pupunha, Varzea, C46
by amazondk- 10 replies

Here are a few shots from my trip over to Itacoatiara this week. The city is 260 kms by road from Manaus and at about KM 200 there is a very large Brazil nut tree plantation. The owners have planted around 1 million trees with many of them being grafted for better fruit production. They are experimenting with plantation trees for lumber as well as fruit. The wood of the Brazil nut is of excellent quality. In order to protect this important element of the forest harvesting Brazil Nut trees is not permitted. But, plantation trees are ok. I think there is a lot of potential in our region for this tree. It grows fast, tall, and aside from wood produces great nuts. In…

19 F (-7.222 C) at the Big H

The Huntington took a hard hit. As soon as I saw the oleaners in the parking lot that had been frozen, I knew they'd gotten down to at least 18-19 F for at least one night. The big palms had little or no damage, but these recently planted Caryota gigas were a different story.

RBG Kew Palm House 1 2

On my second trip to Kew of 2006, I actually managed to label all of my photos, so I thought I would present some of them here, as some of the species don't seem to get pictured much on the forum. Unfortunately the light levels were quite low on the day, so some of the photos didn't come out as well as I would like, so I'll try to stick with the OK shots. I only had time to visit The Palm House on this occasion, but I have posted quite a few photos from The Temperate House previously anyway.
