A Bus Ride in the Big Orgy
by DoomsDave- 36 replies
- 2.5k views
Howdyall: Last weekend, I had a bum knee, so instead of the Tour de La Habra I had to get out of the house in a way that was less orthopedically intensive. This is the 43 bus from La Habra down Harbor Booley, to Costa Mesa. Snapped pics from the Digi-cam out the window of the bus, so these are candid shots . . . Here is a $400K house, on the main drag of Harbor Booley, almost across the street from the King of Big Screen TV (we went past before I could get a pic). Note the Ravenea rivs in the treelawn!

My trip to Montezuma
by Jeff in St Pete- 37 replies
- 1.9k views
Me and a friend of mine decided to take a weekend trip to Montezuma. Montezuma is a very small town on the Nicoya Peninsula and difficult to get to. First we took a bus from Quepos north to Jaco. Jaco is becoming very Americanized and has KFC, Quiznos and Subway so far. Here are some D lutescens lining the main street. I like the way they let them naturally clump here instead of planting 100 plants together.

by osideterry- 33 replies

One of the things that got me into palms was walking my german shepherd Bart. I started noticing palms, and soon wanted to know what each one was. First up... Not sure I like this, but the CIDPs seem happy.

After Townsville we drove up the road a bit, thru the town of Tully, the wettest town in Oz and into the Mission Beach area to look at Licuala's at the Licuala State Forest. We stayed at a caravan park at South Mission Beach and even the palms in the caravan park were spectacular. Looking at Dunk Island from South Mission beach. Looking up South Mission Beach

I just got back from Ft. Myers, FL this Sunday. (Derek, my flight through Atlanta was delayed and I had to fly out on Sunday morning) I had a great time, thanks to Derek, his wife, Jeff Searle, and a few other people. The weather was great and I probably saw more mature palms in 5 days than I do all year here in Cali!!! Here's Derek waiting for his foxtails to load up at a nursery on Pine Island

I had my senior prom this weekend, only I had it in California instead of Florida. I took some photos though: Eucalyptus golobus (?) - note the rope swing. I spent years 3 - 10 in that tree. There used to be a nice tree house too. A "wild" CIDP Some palms in my neighborhood Cool plant in my neighborhood... yucca?

Some pics of my first trip back to Tampa
by Jeff in St Pete- 39 replies

I can only stay in Costa Rica for 90 days at a time with my passport (until I can get residency). Every 90 days I have to leave the country for 72 hours and then I can return for another 90 days. After my first 90 days, I used my return airline ticket to go back to Tampa for a visit. Here is the airport in Quepos (if you can call it that). It is basically a landing strip with a small terminal. Terminal Landing strip. The planes take off over fields of African Oil Palms. If you look closely, you can see them at the end of the runway.

I was going to add these to the thread that Carlo started, but I couldn't find it. These pictures are from a wild grove in the same valley as a plot of land that Carlo owns. Pictures from Carlo's garden to follow on another thread when I have time. Picture one: This was a very impressive site in person. Even on a cloudy day it looked quite spectacular. Picture two: This is taken from the same vantage point, but panned left a llittle. Picture three: Considering the lack of rainfall, other than the day I was there, they look very healthy, but there is planty of water below ground that flows down from the cloud forests. Picture four: …

For Mother's Day I took my Mom to San Diego. While we were there, we visited some places we used to vacation at in the late 60's - this pic taken of us at the Bahia in 1967: Unlike the rest of the world, luckily Mission Bay has not been over built since. It remains pretty much the same except the hippies and head shops aren't as prevelent : Okay but this is a palm forum and not a trip down memory lane so here's the palms I saw at the Bahia:

A trip down the Ichetucknee River, Florida
by kylecawazafla- 28 replies
- 3.8k views
I took these last week while going tubing down one of Florida's clear rivers. The water is 72 F (21 C) all year, so it's pretty. There are a few head springs, but here is one of them. You can see the blue hole in the center of the pond where the water comes out of. I tried swimming down it, but the current is really strong and pushes you up. Here are some as you progress down the spring. There are many fish in the water, some with cool colors. Some limestone "cliffs" Not bad for Florida

I went on a walk after some AP tests again today. I probably shouldn't be doing these things by myself, but I took some photos along the way: A healthy Sabal minor This may be unique in Florida, but a mature Serenoa repens growing by itself! I didn't see another one anywhere in this forest. A jungle-ee Sabal palmetto

Jeff, I just wanted to say thanks for the tour of your nursery & your awsome garden at your house. Your hospitality was upstanding. I'm still blown away by all those crazy Dypsis you have . I plan on collecting more. Maybe we can get JD or Ryan to post some photos. If anybody is in Jeff's neck of the woods, you must see his place. He is a walking book of palm knowledge. Thanks again Jeff.

Macaws in the Buritis
by amazondk- 12 replies

Yesterday on the ride home from Boa Vista to Manaus, 775 kms, I stopped at the southern entrance to the indian reservation to take some pictures of Mauritias and stretch my legs. When I got out of the car I instantly heard the loud screams of a band of blue and gold macaws. Unfortunately you can not see them in the photos. I had my trusty binoculars and could watch them in their late afternoon party quite well. There are a few dead trees around where several couples had nests. In addition to the macaws were a few curica parrots. Then just as we were about to hit the road again a pair of red and green macaws flew over and off toward the soon to set sun. It was one o…

CALIF or Bust! 1 2
by NCpalmqueen- 72 replies

Look out Southern California......You are about to be invaded by palm heads from the Right coast! Do all San Diego Palm Nurserys have "by appointment only" hours during the week? What's up with that?? Can anyone recommend THE best nurserys to visit (not to be missed) in the S.D. area? How far in advance does one need to make an appointment? XMRadio weather for S.D. call for highs in the 60's. That sounds really cold to me since it's been in the 80's & 90's here in the SE. Should I be packing long sleeves and jeans instead of shorts & halters?
