Some palms and other scenes on the Road
by amazondk- 30 replies

I drove over to Itacoatiara, 260 kms by road down the Amazon River for a meeting today. On the way I took a few shots of palms and other sites along the road. I hope you enjoy a little look around Amazonas again. Cocos nucifera plantation. Manaus is a large consumer of coconuts and more and more are being planted along the road. There is a Astrocaryum vulgare in the forground. The day was hot as normal this time of year. I had lunch on a restaurant on the Amazon River. At this point the river is around 100 meters in many places and ocean going vessels sail with no trouble. This is the low water season as you can tell by the visible channel. This is th…

Las Palmas de Puerto Vallarta
by Fred Zone 10A- 19 replies
- 1.6k views
In May my wife and I went to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to relax. We stayed at a lovely hotel in the Marina and didn't do any sightseeing, the purpose of our trip being to recover from a strenuous January through April. The hotel was landscaped with a nice assortment of non-native palms and on my daily walks around the Marina I noticed many other palm species planted around the other hotels and apartment buildings. The first several groups of photos were taken at our hotel. Can you identify these palms? Photo #1 Photo #2 Photo #3

The next stop was Bandung, in western Java for my sister-in-laws wedding. Needless to say, not a lot of time for palm hunting in the two days I was there. Again, very few attempts at identification will be made. Identifications welcome! Hotel Gucci. Gucci is one Indonesian word for pot, and they lived up to the name with potted palms everywhere. This was a modest hotel. Nice branching palm (dypsis?) Probably the healthiest Dypsis decaryi I saw my entire trip (not at the hotel). All the decaryi's I saw had this black mold

Today our palm and cycad society chapter visited the former garden of John and Jean Price. John still had the original palm planting plan which was used to help ID some species. There has been little upkeep and therefore things looked a little shabby. Here are some photos. Studying the plan Nice tall Normanbya normanbyi (Black Palm) Green Bismarckia and a Thrinax sp, alongside Copernicia hospita

Historic Bok Sanctuary

In my thread about Gaylord Palms, Dave-Vero mentioned the Florida coonties (Zamia integrifolia) at the entrance to the visitor center of the Historic Bok Sanctuary. When I attended last Saturday's meeting of the Central Florida Palm and Cycad Society I took a few photos around the visitor center. Although Sabal palmetto is a very common palm to you Floridians, it's not seen very often here in Southern California. I think they are much more attractive than our skinny, shaggy, spiny Washingtonia robusta. Here's a lovely grouping of palmettos. Around the palmettos is a mass planting of coonties and to the right side there are awesome silver Serenoa repens. He…

Boa Vista Roraima

I spent the past few days in and around Boa Vista, Roraima (approximately 900 kms north of Manaus) the next state north of Amazonas bordering on Venezuela. The capital city of Boa Vista is in what is known as Campos Lavrados, a savanna type area dominated by cerrado vegetation. The area is ringed by forest on all sides with the Guyana Shield on the north with the borders of Venezuela and Guyana. The most striking palm in the area is the Buriti, Mauritia flexuosa which populates areas which are normally wet. These pictures I took yesterday afternoon as I took a little photo opportunity jaunt after I got done with business. The area is dominated by the mountains of th…

We took a boat ride from the Visitors Center over to the park. A little trip across the river
by amazondk- 16 replies
- 1.7k views
I went on a little outing with some american friends of mine yesterday. We went across the Negro River to the meeting of the waters where the muddy water Solimoes River (known outside of Brazil normally as the Amazon) joins the Negro River to form the Rio Amazonas (in Brazilian geography). The Negro River at this point where it joins the Solimoes is 14 kms wide and 100 meters deep in parts. It is a lot of water. We then went up to a lake on the other side of the Negro and took a little walk in the varzea flooded forest area. The water is dropping quickly now and you can easily walk where 3 meters of water flowed a few months ago. This area has a lot of forest floo…

I spent a few days conducting business in SoCal. At the tail end of my trip, I met up with Jack "El Hoagie" Sayers and Danny "Palmazon" Lewis. Thanks guys for spending a few hours with me. The night tour of Danny's grenhouse was quite an experience. I've got to get one of those clicking flashlights...LOL. Here are some photos I took at Quail Botanical Gardens. Arenga seeds
