Join me on the upcoming April expedition in Taiwan

Hi guys! It's been many years since I last posted on this forum. Sorry! Just thought I'd mention my upcoming Taiwan expedition (Fri 26 Apr - Wed 08 May 2019) (13 days) https://www.nature-expeditions.co.uk/tours/taiwan-birds-botany-expedition.php I know it says "Birds & Botany" and we will be going to good birding places and seeing birds, but everyone who has already signed up so far are coming for the botany, so the whole expedition will be focused on the botany. I still have a couple of places left so if any of you are interested in joining me you'd be most welcome. I've been visiting Taiwan for about 24 years, I know the islands exceptionall…

Leu Gardens - Some Z9 palms for the gulf coast

I was in central Florida for a couple of days and stopped by Leu Gardens in Orlando. The palm and cycad collection is excellent and it was well worth the visit. I thought the labeling throughout was among the best I have seen in botanic gardens. I was less interested in the really exotic stuff (of which there is plenty) and more focused on seeing some of the palms I'd love to try in Z9b Texas if I could ever find them available. They are all clustering species from East Asia that have a chance to recover from our infrequent but severe freezes. Chuniophoenix nana Lanonia dasyantha Licuala fordiana Rhapis humilis - I was hoping to see cle…

Palma Sola Botanical Park - Bradenton, FL

Florida is a fantastic place to visit botanical gardens any time of the year. I plan to visit more of the smaller and off the beaten path collections this year. I appreciate the folks who got the collection going many years ago, and the locals that seek to protect the specialness of these places once responsibility needs to change hands. Palma Sola Botanical Park is located within a neighborhood fairly The map shows both exposure to the coast but also good reference for non-Floridians to see other nearby towns referenced in the forums palmasola.org to learn more. I’ll revisit over time and add to this thread. There are a few sections of the gardens I didn’t p…

I fell in love with this palm with my first visit to the gardens and through the years I always look forward to seeing it there. This is a highlight reel of pics since 2018. It doesn’t seem to change much. I’m grateful it has never been given an unnecessary pruning. Second to last pic is a month after Hurricanes Helene and Milton. To the right you can see the heavily wind damaged Corypha (which HAS recovered). The last picture is from earlier this month I do have one of my own growing in a container for now. It’s good to have some things to look forward to down the road

Pylos, Peloponnes, Greece
by Janni- 10 replies

Recently I’ve been to Greece for a nice vacation. It was in Pylos on the western coast of the Peloponnes peninsula. The camping site we went to, was approximately 2km away from the luxury hotel, were Giannis Antetokounmpo had his wedding. I saw them partying and asked myself, why he didn’t invite me… The landscape is beautiful and there are gorgeous beaches and of course many ancient sites. The usual things you get in Greece. As usual, I’m quite disappointed regarding palm plantings. 90% you see only Date palms and Washies. the rest are some Chamaerops, Trachys and recently more often Queen Palms. Although I love to see any kind of palm, I am disappointed that t…

Palms in Rome
by TJ_Palmetto- 3 replies

I went on my first trip to Rome and was surprised just how palmy Italy is. Dates, Chinese fan palms, California and Mexican fan palms were very common in the landscape. As well as the more native Mediterranean fan palms. Some trachycarpus as well! I was also surprised to discover how common Kentia palms were as houseplants since their cultivation in Dutch nurseries has made them much more popular and affordable houseplants in Europe.

Not really a travel log as I’m living here at the moment but I do enjoy seeing the array of palms that are able to be grown here in Cyprus. We’re almost in winter and day time temps are still getting to 25°C daily at 35°N.

I've passed by this building for decades on Highway 101, but never took the time to stop in. Visiting my relatives in the Bay Area this week and they took me inside to see the unique (and controversial) design by architect Frank Lloyd Wright: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marin_County_Civic_Center It used to be open to the sky but eventually had a glass roof installed. Lots of renovation ongoing due to aging of the concrete walls and paint. Not sure I'd like working in that environment, but it was great to see up close. The plantings of subtropicals are on four levels.🌴

Ok, since I'm about to post a LOT of pics... I'm not going to label them all (also because there are a few that I'm not certain on the exact species).

Lemonade Travel 1 2

I know lots of us are doing our best to use nonrefundable flights and creating adventures for the time we had hoped to be in New Caledonia. When life gives you lemons, as with the unavoidable New Cal trip cancellation, I see us as making lemonade. Many IPS members have offered advice and even lodging and transportation. My trip began with 4 flights to get from my rural mountain home in Puerto Rico to the ultramodern airport LAX. I was picked up by Andy Hurwitz and provided with every comfort. He and his wife Arlene were wonderful hosts and I enjoyed seeing their charming neighborhood and much more. I was gifted with tours of p…

This past weekend I attended my first Northern California Palm Society Meeting in Montara, CA, at the home of Jim Sayre. He has has a great property on a south facing slope along the coastline, where the ocean moderates the temperatures during the day and night. The south facing slope offers more heat than some of the surrounding area, as well as a nice wind break. The results are incredible palms in their prime that you had to see to believe. Fortunately for you, I had my camera out and took these photos to share what I saw... Note: I may misidentify a palm or two below, if you spot a mistake, let me know! Enjoy! Grove of Parajubaea Torallyi... stunn…

Palm Sunday Tour of the Morningside Park Palmetum

Sunday, April 13, 2025, Palm Sunday, found a group of female Scouts touring the Morningside Park Palmetum in Miami, Florida. This three-acre palmetum (palm garden) has been part of Morningside Park's original design since it opened in 1953. In recent years it has been greatly improved by volunteers, now home to approximately 200 palms, with 125 different species. Unfortunately, the City of Miami has drawn up plans to get rid of the palmetum. Whether that will actually happen remains to be seen, as the political saga is ongoing.

A trip to Nimbin in Australia
by happypalms- 0 replies

The beautiful colourful town of Nimbin in the far north coast region, nestled in the mountains that form part of the great dividing range, the northern rivers town of Lismore is about a 25 minute drive basically in the hinterland from Byron bay on the coast. A very unique type of people live in this town. One would say the child of the Aquarius festival in the 70s. Some of you know what iam talking about a counter culture of people with idealism and free thoughts in peace loving manner for the planet. And with a movement of leftover hippies from Woodstock. They had the Aquarius festival and never left the quiet countryside of the dairy farmers. And if it wasn’t for these …

I have been residing in Spain for a bit and a few weeks ago I had the chance to take a weekend trip to Lisbon, Portugal and check out the gardens there. These are from mid march. I hope you guys enjoy This is Butia capitata. A palm I actually never saw before in person until now. A lot of palms labeled at B. capitata in the Southeast US are actually B. odorata. They both look similar. An unmarked Sabal. Not sure what this one might be. Sabal palmetto what we all know and love lol. Someone pointed out that this might be a mi…
