Another stop on my trip to Florida a few weeks. Flamingo Gardens in Davie, FL. I was planning to visit Fairchild but time was short. Flamingo is always a nice option and closeby to Weston and Ft Lauderdale. I posted many orchid photos in the orchid thread under the TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms“ section” of PT.

Some photos from the first half of my trek. There are some palms (not a lot) and lots of other plants that I've tried to identify, but don't guarantee accuracy. Feel free to add or correct any IDs. Big extensive views aren't very common under rainforest canopy, but I did manage a few. The photos are numbered if there's any need to refer back to them. 1) View of the terrain ahead from a clearing at the start of the trek. 2) Melastoma malabathricum, also common in Australia. 3) Orthosiphon aristatus - Cat's Whiskers. Very common garden plant around the world. 4) Heavy overnight rain muddied up the creek where we camped but clea…

Two weeks ago there was a holiday here and i got two more days vacation. My family, my parents and all my sisters families, went to a warm water resort in Jurema , Central Paraná. The climate there is a lot warmer than here on the second tableland, because of the low altitude and it´s also located northern from here. The distance from Carambeí to Jurema is +- 300 km. I didn´t saw so many palms on the road,(mostly queens) but I photographed some of them. I saw Acrocomia totai,a Butiagrus,a Sabal species(?) and most interesting of all: Euterpe edulis growing in the warm region of Jurema but also a few trees in the araucaria forest ,in a region that officialy isn´t the …

My first visit from PT Members was a 2fer

This visit in California really started because @Johnny Palmseed in Florida was so kind to share some of his Veitchia Joannis seeds. You can read about his "neighbor wars" over this seed supplier palm that was removed to keep some kind of PEACE with a 20 year neighbor. 14 months later, a PT Member in So. Cal. was hoping to receive some of these same seeds and heard this story. I was messaged leading to a first visit yesterday Tuesday 8-15-2023 to see these seedlings. @Palmiz brought another PT Member @Billeb and they got to see what I am dealing with to germinate seeds, then keeping the seedlings alive. I've got plenty of property but it is on an ancient riverbed whe…

I haven't been able to attend an IPS Meeting yet, due to my kids always having activities on the weekend, but I've been fortunate enough to get personal tours a few of these amazing gardens. Yesterday was primarily to visit @BS Man about Palms amazing garden. Bill was kind enough to visit my (relatively young) garden in South Carlsbad, and gave me INCREDIBLY helpful advice on plant location & care. He then invited me to come see his garden, but it's far enough away that I needed an excuse. So when Bill mentioned he had an extra bag of high-quality soil I could buy from him, I jumped at the chance! Approaching the garden, it was obvious which house was his. T…

I know people have posted about opryland before, but this is one of my favorite local places to go hangout especially during the winter. When it gets cold and need a taste of plant heaven I just take a 30min drive and I’m on a daycation. A lot of plants aren’t labeled, as far as really tropical plants my knowledge is limited. I’ll just post the pics and let them speak for themselves. A lot of palms had seeds hanging. I collected some from a very old chammie humilis, cherry on the top for today. It’s really an unbelievable place, I must have been here 30 times and I’m just awestruck every time. If a private garden had an 1/8 of the plants here as big as they are it would b…

Queen Kapi'olani Garden, Honolulu, Hawaii
by Nomad NYC- 1 reply

In the beginning of my recent Hawaiian vacation, I managed to stumble upon a little park called the Queen Kapi'olani Garden in Honolulu while walking from my hotel at Waikiki to hike up at Diamondhead national park: The Garden seems to be botanical in nature, but examples of the labeling of the plants are far and few ( so I will be guessing their identity, unless they are specifically labled ). I'm not a big Pritchardia expert, so not sure what kind of Pritchardia palm species this is below. I think it looks like Pritchardia Kaalae.... Or maybe a Koolau Range Pritchardia ( Pritchardia Martii )? I believe that the Pritchardia …

About a month ago I began my two week Hawaiian vacation by flying into Honolulu airport. While I was walking down the upper level of Terminal 1 to go get my suitcase at baggage claim, I happened to see a very nice looking Hawaiian park area below : At the time, I was also too tired to investigate further (being jet lagged from New York) , but resolved myself to check it out on my departure, if I had the time. Flash forward two weeks later, when I returned to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on my way back home, and had time to spare for a little visit. There where of course many palms there, as well as other interesting tropical looking plants. Unfor…

Yaeyama Islands

I recently visited the Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, which are home to four native palms, Satakentia liukiuensis (endemic), Arenga ryukyuensis, Livistona chinensis, and Nypa fruticans. I didn't see any Nypa during the trip, but I documented the other three species and included some comments about their habitat. Satakentia liukiuensis: Yonehara Palm Grove, easily the most accessible location for seeing Satakentia in the wild. On Ishigaki, this species is largely restricted to a handful of dense groves in the foothills along the Northen coast. I did not observe any wild specimens on Iriomote. It was raining during the visit and the…

I moved to Fresno, CA just a year ago, and I began planting King Palms. Unfortunately, I didn't have any success at the time. Luckily, I found @Josue Diaz in Fresno from Palmtalk, Josue provided me with a lot of great advices about growing palm trees for my area and even invited me to visit his tropical garden, which is filled with hundreds of exotic palm trees that he has grown from seeds. These palm trees took years to mature from seed, but also look so cool when they're matured. While I can't name all of them, here are some of the palm trees he gave me: - Serenoa Repens Silver - Brahea Hybrid (aka Frankenbrahea) - Brahea Armata- Chambeyronia Macrocarpa Waterme…

Jupiter Ridge Natural Area

How could a golf course design and acquisition create a sensational State/County Natural Preserve/Park? This is an out of the ordinary story with a great ending that involves some real characters. George Fazio was a golf professional who was originally from Philadelphia, who had a successful touring pro career (won the Canadian Open, the Bing Crosby Pro-Am, and lost in a playoff in the 1950 U.S. Open played at Merion won by Ben Hogan). Earlier he had been head pro at the Hillcrest Golf Club in Los Angeles, where he became good friends with many Hollywood stars, including Bob Hope. In 1968, Fazio and longtime friend, Bill Ford (Ford Motors) were teamed together…

Hello fellow palmateers, I'm going to be in the Seychelles in October and November this year. Besides the Vallée de Mai, what sights should I plan to see? Which trails, parks, islands, will offer interesting flora and fauna and geology—including, of course, palms? I'll be on Mahé, Praslin, La Digue, and Silhouette. Thank you! Jason

Edison & Ford Estates 2023

In February I visited this Fort Myers landmark (HIGHLY recommend). I was curious to see what effects Hurricane Ian had on this place five months down the road. McGregor Blv Edison and his Banyan Tree. This tree was stripped of its leaves in Ian but has now recovered. Huge Old and Resilient (100+ years!) Caloosahatchee River and Edison’s original dock (beautiful coconut!) Giant & old Staghorn Fern belonged to Edison’s wife (river is right behind the bamboo curtain ) Turning my back to the fern looking toward the estates. This area was submerged by s…

mckee McKee Botanical Gardens - Vero Beach, FL

This is a good garden to visit if you should happen to be on the east central coast of Florida or you want to visit a great garden that doesn't have the notoriety that others in the state receive. There are a lot of mature specimens of Cocos nucifera, Roystonea regia, Ficus aurea, and various water lilies. The video tour is roughly 10 minutes long to view all four parts and the previous threads from 15+ years ago have some additional photos of palms of interest, including the pre-1989 Roystonea regia.
