Edison Estate Part I 1 2

Howdyall: Here's a thread about the sights at the Edison Estate in Fort Myers. I shot through there on my way down to Naples. It was a cloudy day when I started, gonna try to keep things in more or less chron-order. Some of these pics had to be cropped rather severely, but I thought all were worthwhile. Away we go . . . . This is the Florida Champion Banyan tree. Hmm. Wonder what it has for breakfast? ??? And how much and for how long?

Ok, since I'm about to post a LOT of pics... I'm not going to label them all (also because there are a few that I'm not certain on the exact species).

Above are links to topics from the wonderful 2018 Colombia adventure with the IPS. Today’s topic is my return to this beautiful country 4 years later. When I got the chance to join up with the Heliconia Society International trip Nov 27-Dec 12, 2022 in and around Cali, I was delighted. They divided the travel into a pre trip (jungle adventures), conference at the Quindío Botanical Garden and the post tour adding more typical cultural experiences. https://www.heliconia.org I couldn’t choose so went for them all. They had a few challenges accepting international payments so I had my first experience making a wire transfer. Too little notice to po…

In October 2006,the IPS sponsored a trip to the Dominican Republic to view native palms in situ.Fast forward 14 years for another peek at this specific, spectacular, remote area, occupied by Coccothrinax scoparia. This is a medium sized "high elevation" palm that grows mostly in shady, pine forests.Tree is very similar to Coccothrinax montana, another Dominican mountain palm, the easiest identifier being white fruits on montana vs. traditional purple cocco fruits on scoparia. aztropic Mesa,Arizona

Nong Nooch - Pattaya, Thailand

I thought I’d share some pictures from my recent trip to Nong Nooch. It’s a very impressive garden, and it’s very different from any garden I’ve visited. It’s more like a theme park and perhaps approach’s the scale of one of the Disney parks in Orlando. You could spend more than one day there and I didn’t have time to visit everything, including their palm nursery or Palms of the World sections.

Tampa General Hospital Palms

This is a “ Palm Garden” at Tampa General Hospital ( TGH) in Tampa on Davis Island. Our oldest son arrived at Tampa General via the TGH trauma chopper from a Palm Beach area hospital in August of 2021 with critical Covid. My wife, our youngest son and the undersigned relocated to be with our son as close as possible to the hospital while his wife primarily remained in the PB area with their two children ( our grandchildren). We have returned to TGH for the completion of some necessary additional surgery to allow for the reversal of his colostomy. TGH is a world class teaching hospital affiliated with the University of South Florida medical school. This is hopefully …

Temperate hardwood forest, probably usda zone 7B/8A Out of the palms that were planted in the area, some of the sabal palmetto had discoloration from the Christmas cold event, the same with the Butia odorata. The few washingtonia robusta were completely torched. It was about ~35F when I took these photos. VID_20230109_080657.mp4

Palms & lush tropical landscapes in Weston,FL

More FL travel photos. Getting reacquainted with the town of Weston, FL this week. Prior to discovering Sanibel as a vacation spot, i would regularly visit this town near Ft. Lauderdale. I’ve always been amazed by the tropical Landscaping and beauty of this town. The entire town feels like a botanic garden. It is planned so meticulously; architecture, immaculate and layered street landscaping, entrance gates, even down to the trash cans and street lamps. When you enter this town you know you are here and when you leave you know you’ve left. Kudos to the original planners of this town and to those that continue its original vision through excellent maintenance.

Gulf Waters RV Resort | Port Aransas, TX

In October I took a few days trip to Port A and enjoyed every minute of it! The people who rent out these lots did a fantastic job on their landscaping it gives the park a very palmy, private and relaxed vibe. Each lot has its own unique set up and landscaping, mine had a pond side cabana. This park is right by the gulf with convenient boardwalk aces that can accommodate golf carts, the beach is rarely busy at this location. There is also a nice pool in the park. I just love this beach-side paradise right here in Texas. 🏖️ 🌴

Big Bend National Park, Texas

Not really a park associated with palms per se; however, there are some interesting Phoenix sp. stands (probably Phoenix dactylifera) located at the Hot Springs Historic Area of the park along the Rio Grande. They were probably planted there before it became a National Park (possibly by the homesteader J.O. Langford). They are located at 29.177583103922945, -102.99869840224089. These pictures were taken on March 20, 2022. I spoke to one of the park rangers there about them. They said that the National Park Service does absolutely nothing to maintain these palm; they are left to their own devices. There is a hot spring along the Rio Grande nearby. It is heated by so…

The coconut palms of Florida...winter dreaming:

I thought palm lovers would like these pictures. In the cold season I often make my way south down the coast and end up somewhere on the east coast of Florida. The coconut palms seem to start in north -central Florida near Coco-Beach area. There is nothing like taking pictures of coconut palms on a winter day. LOL. Some random pictures:

Bill Austin garden tour, Hawaii Island, Jul 16
by mike in kurtistown- 6 replies

I have some photos to offer from this tour last Saturday. Bill Austin's palm garden is several decades old, and will likely be available for visits during the IPS biennial in October. Readers will observe many umbrellas. This is because the time of the tour was right at the closest approach of Tropical Storm Darby to the southeast of Hawaii Island. Somehow I managed to take 33 photos, not all worth showing, while manipulating my umbrella and keeping my camera out of the rain. Some local palm buffs will see their images in photos, hard to avoid in a well-attended tour, so I apologize for that. (I just hope no one is wanted by the FBI.) The best represented genus is Dy…

Incredible specimen palms at Ventura College

Guys...has anyone seen the palms around the parking lot at the Ventura College West Entrance? Although they look a bit neglected and underwatered now, they're clearly very old and some are really weird species I've never seen in person before. I'm definitely gonna need help with ID below genus level (and sometimes genus too). 1) Hyophorbe verschafeltii? Maybe Dypsis decipiens? 2) Pritchardia (no idea what species) 3) Roystonea (regia?) 4) Some sort of Ceroxylon (?!!!!) 5) Pair of Parajubaea cocoides (right?) 6&7) No freakin clue...something very tall and thin the likes of which I've only seen in Hawaii. Some…

Longwood Gardens, Pennsylvania - indoor palms & displays

Two weeks ago I visited Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. If you’re unfamiliar with the gardens they are top-tier US horticulture; extraordinary displays. I only had time for the conservatory spaces. The outdoors gardens are amazing and require more time to explore. I enjoyed seeing the juxtaposition of tropical foliage alongside temperate climate bedding plants, spring bulbs, etc. Some impressive highlights were the orchid house; the magnificent orangery-type hallways lined with Palladian windows ( looking like Versailles meets horticultural exuberance); the center turf grass lawn with palms, giant hanging flowering spheres; a gallery room flooded with appro…

I'm working in Savannah now. Palmettoes are so common they seem boring here. Very weedy. But go a few hours north, and palmettoes seem like a luxury. Anyway, here are a few pics: Dioon, probably not edule. The leaflets are several inches long. Camellia giganticarpa Castanopsis fissa with big leaves grevillea robusta

I've found a lot of random posts regarding this, so seemed like a good place to start a new thread in hopes others will contribute and share what they see growing around town. This is probably the most beautiful Queen palm I've ever seen, growing in a subdivision on the Northside, New Berlin Road area. Same neighborhood, not sure if it's Adonidia merillii or Wodyetia bifurcata. And this one is my neighbor's tree two blocks away, Butia for sure, not sure what variety. Arlington and Oakwood Rd area And my other neighbor's Butia, says they planted these 30 years ago, completely different look from the one above
