Bill Austin garden tour, Hawaii Island, Jul 16
by mike in kurtistown- 6 replies

I have some photos to offer from this tour last Saturday. Bill Austin's palm garden is several decades old, and will likely be available for visits during the IPS biennial in October. Readers will observe many umbrellas. This is because the time of the tour was right at the closest approach of Tropical Storm Darby to the southeast of Hawaii Island. Somehow I managed to take 33 photos, not all worth showing, while manipulating my umbrella and keeping my camera out of the rain. Some local palm buffs will see their images in photos, hard to avoid in a well-attended tour, so I apologize for that. (I just hope no one is wanted by the FBI.) The best represented genus is Dy…

Incredible specimen palms at Ventura College

Guys...has anyone seen the palms around the parking lot at the Ventura College West Entrance? Although they look a bit neglected and underwatered now, they're clearly very old and some are really weird species I've never seen in person before. I'm definitely gonna need help with ID below genus level (and sometimes genus too). 1) Hyophorbe verschafeltii? Maybe Dypsis decipiens? 2) Pritchardia (no idea what species) 3) Roystonea (regia?) 4) Some sort of Ceroxylon (?!!!!) 5) Pair of Parajubaea cocoides (right?) 6&7) No freakin clue...something very tall and thin the likes of which I've only seen in Hawaii. Some…

Longwood Gardens, Pennsylvania - indoor palms & displays

Two weeks ago I visited Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. If you’re unfamiliar with the gardens they are top-tier US horticulture; extraordinary displays. I only had time for the conservatory spaces. The outdoors gardens are amazing and require more time to explore. I enjoyed seeing the juxtaposition of tropical foliage alongside temperate climate bedding plants, spring bulbs, etc. Some impressive highlights were the orchid house; the magnificent orangery-type hallways lined with Palladian windows ( looking like Versailles meets horticultural exuberance); the center turf grass lawn with palms, giant hanging flowering spheres; a gallery room flooded with appro…

I've found a lot of random posts regarding this, so seemed like a good place to start a new thread in hopes others will contribute and share what they see growing around town. This is probably the most beautiful Queen palm I've ever seen, growing in a subdivision on the Northside, New Berlin Road area. Same neighborhood, not sure if it's Adonidia merillii or Wodyetia bifurcata. And this one is my neighbor's tree two blocks away, Butia for sure, not sure what variety. Arlington and Oakwood Rd area And my other neighbor's Butia, says they planted these 30 years ago, completely different look from the one above

The Hawaii Island Palm Society and Floribunda Palms & Exotics put on their first ever Palm Master Class - and it was pretty mind blowing. The class size was restricted so there were two sessions of a little less than 30 people each. We met at the Hawaiian Acres Community Association and HIPS shuttled people to Floribunda with a rented a shuttle bus and a member's minivan.

An amazing trip to Nepal 1 2

Kim and I returned earlier this month after an incredible trip to Nepal. We spent the first couple of days in and around Kathmandu, staying in the fascinatingly messy Thamel neighborhood where lots of pedestrians, lots of motorcycles and cars (mostly small Suzukis) mingled as if there was no tomorrow! It should be pointed out that this is a two way street. Traffic is on the left side.

Your dream itinerary in Madagascar
by Dadamanga- 6 replies

Serious question. We have some post-covid (although it’s not really “post” yet is it?) funding from the government of Madagascar and the World Bank through a program called Mandrisika, to analyse our existing products (we are a travel company based here in Madagascar) and to develop some new products. We’ve done plenty of tours with palm lovers but not really a specific “palms” tour where checking species off a bucket-list of must-sees was the goal. And, very few people have more than 2 or 3 weeks, so, a palm-hunting tour always has to be narrowed down and prioritised, you can’t see it all in the time most people have. Another thing that we know is that most folks u…

Palms in Ukraine

The area of Greater Yalta on the Crimean Peninsula in the south of Ukraine is conveniently fenced off from the cold winter weather by the Crimean Mountain Range. The climate in Yalta changes rapidly as you descend from the mountains and becomes Subtropical Mediterranean as you get closer to the sea. Palms have been cultivated in Yalta since the early 19th Century.

On google maps the trip is a 7 hour drive (without stops), in reality it’s all of a day. The day was hot for late February and exactly like a summer day in Texas. White quebracho (Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco) is a common tree around Santiago del Estero The rustic tala (Celtis tala) is closely related to our native desert hackberry and another common tree almost everywhere Monk parakeets taking advantage of a dying red quebracho tree Roadkill on the way to Chaco province. These are the most impressive snakes of the region. A nice Caesalpinia (Libidibia) paraguariensis near the Chaco border It stil…

Don’t know if the travel log is the best place to put this, but I did have to travel to Argentina to take these pics so I’m putting it here. Santiago del Estero has a hot, semi-humid climate with scorching summers but radiation frosts also occur in winter away from the city core. Most of the Argentine native trees grown there should do well in South Texas, the tougher ones should be usable all the way up to Corpus. Tabebuia aurea, a tree that took some branch loss in the lower RGV in ‘21 but came right back Tatane (Chloroleucon tenuiflorum). Looks like a giant tropical Texas ebony, they some had smaller stem damage in ‘21 in the Harlingen area but have ou…

Cuban Royals in Chandler, AZ 1 2

OK, this is sort of a re-post or really an update from a post that Lee in AZ had on the old board. I live in Chandler, Arizona where today it's 105d F, and this time of year we're about 40-50% humidity, waiting for (hopefully) an afternoon or evening thunderstorm to cool the earth. In this climate, it's been very common to see queen palms, all kinds of date palms, and washingtonias up the wazoo. There's an Elephant Bar resteraunt a little less than a mile from my house that has two roystonea regia's gracing their main entrance, and they appear to be doing really well. The photo's taken are at about 3:00pm today. The palms are planted on a north facing wall and appear …

Pictures of Sabal minor growing in habitat at Honey Creek State Natural Area, Texas (approximate GPS coordinates: 29.859131138720375, -98.48455621328327). These were taken on January 29, 2022. There are some other specimens growing along the river at the adjacent Guadalupe River State Park; however, they are not as prevalent, or grow as large there. These Sabal minor were observed growing in three distinct environments: 1. Along the creek side and close to water; 2. Along and on top of the rocky hillside/cliffs; and 3. Out in the open in the Live Oak savanna.

Best Botanical Garden for Palms in LA
by palmhort- 5 replies

I am planning on attending the Biennial in October and want to stop in LA on the way to visit a botanical Garden. I've never been to LA and may not have a lot of time to visit more than 1 garden. What botanical garden is THE BEST for seeing Palms? I initially thought Huntington Botanical Garden was the best but upon a Google search, I'm thinking maybe not? Thanks for the help. Jeff
