Santa Cruz, CA

Though a trip to Santa Cruz (about 2 hours South of San Francisco) cannot compare to many of the vacation pics posted here, I thought some might like to see what is happily and not-so-happily growing in Santa Cruz. Most probably know that Santa Cruz is a beach town with a carnival-type boardwalk and a large community of sea lions living mainly underneath the pier. Having not been there in a while, I was suprised to see only a few palm species planted regularly. I did not seek out collector gardens this trip, but simply took photos of the beach and surrounding areas. Here are some typical scenes: Triple washies line the beach: Quintuple washie:

Some palm pictures from the deep south ...
by Christian_G- 10 replies

Hi! Here are some pictures of palms & tree ferns growing in the garden of Frédy and Jean-Claude, two friends of mine. The property is located in Cimo (a small village in southern Switzerland), close to the Lago Maggiore, a lake shared by Ticino (Switzerland) and Italy. I think the idea to call this property "Casa Amazonia" is not a bad idea ... I hope you like the pictures! Let' s start with Butia capitata, Cycas revoluta, and some Dicksonia antarctica leaves. Ciao, Christian

Tsimbazaza in Antananarivo
by elHoagie- 21 replies

This is probably the last of the palm photos I'll post from my trip to Madacascar. These were all taken at the Tsimbazaza in the capital city of Antananarivo. The Tsimbazaza was originally a military base, then a botanical garden, and now a zoo and museum. I think the garden was started about 75 years ago, so there are a lot of mature specimens. The capital is located almost in the center of the country at an elevation of 1200m. My guide said the temperatures drop below 5C sometimes, and she's seen light frost. It was pretty cool most of the time I spent in the capital, probably 20C during the day. Here's a picture of my wife and I under a mature Dypsis decipie…

Here are a few shots from Balbina Lake some 170 kms north of Manaus. I took my son who lives in Fort Lauderdale, and my wife's son from here out to catch from Peacock Bass yesterday. Balbina Lake is an enormous reservoir that was formed by the damming of the Uatuamã River in the 1970's. The project was sort of an ecological disaster as the hydroelectric potential was minimal when compared to the cost and the impacts on the enviroment. In 1997 there was a problem with the turbines and the lake was basically drained. This happened to be a very dry year and many fires started which burned for several months all over the lake bed. This is why many of the dead trees in …

Earlier this month Richard from TX, Zac from NC, and I went to Sonora and traveled through out the center of the state. It was tough, having to come back from San Carlos. There's no shortage of Roystonea regia and C. nucifera there, nor Delonix regia. Not bad for 28.0° N. Lee

Rockhampton Botanic Gardens

After leaving Brisbane on our adventure up the east coast of Oz, we stopped in at the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens which is right smack bang on the tropic of capricorn and inland some way. Rockhampton is quite a green city with palms planted in a lot of places. Pity the Palm society there has closed down. The climate seems very good for palms. Here are some bottles that just make you go oooh when you first catch sight of them.

Here's a few pics from a trip we made to QLD last year around late Oct to Nov starting at Brisbane and ending in Cooktown. These pics are from Mt Cootha Botanic Gardens, probably one of the best palmy places on Earth IMO. A must see if ever you can get there. This is the entrance and a great stand of D lutescens.
