I thought this was a very cool photograph from way back in 1919. Pretty impressive if I say so. I found this picture on the internet, so Kudos to the original photographer.

The Road To Serra Bonita
by amazondk- 30 replies

I flew up to Boa Vista, Roraima on Monday on business. I have been making this trip a lot lately either by car or plane. The hour plane flight takes you across the equator and into another climate and vegetation zone. The area around Boa Vista (2.85 North Lattitude) is savana vegetation called Campos Lavrados. The mountains nearby are in a transition zone from this drier land to the Amazonian forest in all directions. On Tuesday I was at a town 40 kms from Boa Vista where some of our suppliers have operations and took advantage of the late afternoon sun to explore the area. Here on the equator the sun always goes down around 6 PM and the twilight time is short. But…

Land Search
by RainForestt Robert- 8 replies
The search for land on a small island is extremely frustrating. After taking family, work, commute and money available into consideration I can't afford much land that would be attached to single family dwelling. Our present home (uncompleted) is on just 5500 sq feet. The footprint of the house takes up most of the yard. No room for a bismarckia ! The cost of land is escalating dramatically. Ours appreciated over 100 percent in the last 3 years. And the cost of construction has also doubled. (Did I say the house is not finished?) Townhouses, almost unheard of a few years ago are sprouting up all over. Meanwhile, there is a 3/4 acre empty lot next to me, owne…

San Diego Trip
by jrod- 4 replies

I know this probably isn't anything special to most of the people from the forum but these are some pictures I took from a recent trip to San Diego. I kept looking around for different varieties but the majority of palms were Queens, Chamaerops, Washingtonia, and Phoenix species. I was with a group, so i was unable to go to some of the places I wanted but maybe next time. Most of the pictures were taken at Balboa Park. The majority are of palms but there are others in there also. Check them out.

Tired of Cocos?

Occasionally, I go with a local family to one of the plush resorts on the Kona coast where some of them work, for a Sunday buffet. Unlike the other world class resorts here, the Kona Village is built in the old Hawaiian style, with single hales (bungalows) on the pristine coastline, or surrounding the many lagoons in the area. No phones, no TVs, no pavement, and no noise. However, there are lots of coco palms, and some beautiful old Hawaiian scenes. Here are a few to enjoy. Registration Buffet Hale And the Grounds

Palms, Hotels or other Places

It would be interesting to see the landscape designs and ideas for swimming pools in hotels or other places around the world. This what I think is the best one in our area. It is the Tropical Business Hotel at the Ponta Negra in Manaus. Of any urban place that I know this is one of the most beautiful. A lot of Bactris gasipaes are used. This is a great local palm for our climate. Tropical Business Hotel Manaus View from back of hotel toward the Ponta Negra Blvd. Tropical Business Hotel lookng up from the back Bactris gasipaes.

On the Tuesday after the Searle Brother's Spring Plant Extravaganza, I spent the day at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and took a few pictures. I tried to write down the palms as I was taking pictures, but I may have missed a few and probably misspelled many. Rainforest Meets The Beach
by RainForestt Robert- 12 replies

Last weekend I took a short trip to Trinidad's most popular beach, Maracas. It is only about 20 minutes from the Capital, Port of Spain, reached along the North Coast Road. It is very scenic. I took a couple of shots along the way. This photo is taken from a lookout where almost everyone stops for a photo op, purchase a souvenir or stock up on supplies or to participate in one of our favorite exercises, bending the elbow (taking a drink!)
