Palms potted in neat coir
by Neil C- 1 follower

I've noticed an increasing amount of potted palms for sale that appear to be planted in nothing but coir. On the plus side I can see that this is great for root growth, is lightweight and tends not to get waterlogged. On the negative side I would imagine very low in nutrients, relatively expensive and time consuming compared to usual potting mix. I would love to hear other's views on this practice and wether they have noticed an increase in this in their areas? I've tried a few potted palms in potting mixes containing coir with different percentages for a few years now and I must say that the results are fairly inconclusive. Regards Neil

Roots Above Soil Level
by nitsua0895- 10 replies

I've got four Dypsis Decaryi palms in pots and three are growing very well but one has stopped growing entirely and I think it has something to do with the top of its roots being above the soil. What's the best course of action for this problem? I've also got a Wodyetia Bifurcata that's doing the same thing and I'm just holding it up with a piece of bamboo and string at the moment.

Where to keep planted seedlings
by Andrew19- 1 reply

Hi everyone, have 2 princess palms planted and an areca palm. I am not sure where to keep them- I have read many things: under light, in indirect sunlight, outside in warm sunlight, and not to worry about light, just somewhere humid. Any assistance would be great.

The Spring Burn-off is Done, New Growth Incoming!
by Funkthulhu- 2 replies

So, I have put everything out on the balcony on and off (freeze warnings) for almost the last month. But, we have had our first back to back 80F degree days (90 degrees actually) this weekend. Of course, on one of the days earlier this week I was away from home and some of my previously indoor-only palms got full Nebraska sun for about 14 hours. Everybody had plenty of water, but all of the newest leaves went silver in an afternoon. Now they're not just down and brown, they're crispy, whispy and light tan at this point. But the like the Phoenix rising from the ashes... I have a LOT of new growth! This happens in some way every year, but it seems the burnin…

Variegated Chamaedora blooming
by SHEP- 7 replies
- 1.1k views
Darold Petty gave me this variegated Chamaedora years ago. I always kept in pot, and moved around outside, mostly in filtered light. I fed it, but never transplanted it. I took it inside the house, two weeks ago, and to my surprise, it now has six buds that are ready to bloom. I guess it likes the warmth in the house. Does anybody know if it has a name? Cecile

Perhaps this has been asked earlier but how often you water your outside palms in pots in Fall and Winter? at the moment we are in Fall and nights getting cooler ( last night was 8C) and I am just curious ( if there is no raining) how often I need to water my palms in pots outside ? also when the watering should be done, in mid day when its warmer ?

Dictyosperma album- how to plant?
by Andrew19- 5 replies

Hi everyone, just had some Dictyosperma album seeds arrive, will probably plant this coming Monday after a good soak. Any tips RE: how to plant properly in a pot? Is peet moss ok? I have a few small nursery pots or a bigger 3 gallon one. Should I plant in the smaller one until it outgrows it or can I go right for the 3 gallon? Thanks.

Pinanga Coronata wilting and drying up

Hi everyone, I bought a 7' tall Pinanga Coronata and since it has arrived (approximately 7 weeks ago) it has been slowly wilting away with picture evidence below. I have tried to increase its watering but am hesitant to do so now as the soil is certainly NOT dry and the leaves are slowly turning dark and wilting and drying up completely before falling off. It's in a 5 gallon pot with drainage holes and apart from the original dirt it came in, I mixed it with very well draining loose soil with plenty of perlite. There are a few red spider mites on some leaves but nothing overwhelming. A picture below shows a healthy stem and another that is slowly dying. Suggestions?

Liquid fertilizer?
by sashaeffer- 8 replies

I've read many posts about using "liquid fertilizer" so was wondering what is meant by that. Fish Emulsion? dry granular like Miracle Grow dissolved in water? or is there a liquid premix specific for palm trees. Insight would be helpful.

Hello, I am very new to growing palms. So far I have 4 parlor palms and I am waiting on some princess, kentia, and foxtail seeds. I live in a cooler climate so the plants will be inside Nov-Feb. I do have a laundry room at home where a ballast already exists and could be re-purposed, but if I were to look at any ballast-free lighting, what would my options be. Ideally, bulbs that I could add to a lamp or a plugin strip would be ideal. Also, what bulb wattage would be sufficient? Thanks in advance.

Hello, I am very new to growing palms. I have 4 small parlor palms so far and am looking to provide some fertilizer. I checked my local dollar store and bought these: https://www.amazon.ca/Jobes-Houseplant-Indoor-Fertilizer-Spikes/dp/B000279304/ref=pd_cp_86_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=7PEKWC42Z91P52MDSVZK Would they be ok, or would something like these from Amazon be better? https://www.amazon.ca/Jobes-Indoor-Fertilizer-30-Pack-5101/dp/B000GD3KD0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493138672&sr=8-1&keywords=jobe%27s+palm+spikes Thanks in advance.

Rhapis multifida clustering or multiple seeds 1 2 3
by David_Sweden- 80 replies

I've been thinking about getting a Rhapis multifida since in some pics it looks beyond beautiful and should do nicely without any direct sun in my apartment. And a few months ago I thought I was in luck when I saw this being sold in Germany: However I didn't really like the look of it, despite having all those stems. Too much stems too little leaves I think, for my apartment but probably nice outdoors. But now a thought crossed my mind: Could it be that this is not true clustering, that they have planted several seeds to save time? Or have they cut off unhealthy fronts to a too large extent? For comparison here are some pics I found of astonishing specimens:

How come by soaking seeds in (tap) water some times are produced bubbles and some not? Does it have to do with the quality of seeds or with remnants of a previous disinfection attempt by one of the owning predecessors or what? Here's an example Here's an example of no bubbles And comparison

Mini greenhouse multi-tasking

My elderly kitty, Great Great Grandma, is semi-retired, and she has come to really appreciate some extra heat. Here she is atop some greenhouses in my bathroom which are heated to 80 F 27 C 24/7.I gave her a little towel, but she seems to like it better right on the plastic. Do your cats/dogs/other critters like your heated germination devices?

Germinating tropical palm seeds in colder climates
by maxum2610- 3 replies
- 1.6k views
Here are a few pictures of my germination setup and nursery for the most tropical palms species. This is the second year I've been using this setup and it works great. The germination box, the idea for which I blatantly stole from the Spanish section of the forum. I believe it was a post from 2008. In any case it's just a box made out spare insulation plates taped together: Heating is by a good old fashioned incandescent light bulb with a temperature controller to keep it at around 32C. It does it's job nicely, very high germination rate. I used to use a propagator with bottom heat, but found that the soil dried out at the bottom too much. G…

Seedlings - Yellowing Leaves
by PaddyM- 2 replies
I posted this in the Cold Hardy forum but just realized that this might be the better place for it. Thanks for any advice! My Washingtonia seedlings are about eight months old. In the past few weeks, some of the leaves started to yellow at the tips which has been spreading down the leaf. Any advice? I started fertilizing them about two weeks ago, thinking maybe it is a nitrogen deficiency since I'm growing them in a perlite/vermiculite/spaghnum mix. That doesn't seem to be slowing the yellowing yet, but maybe it's too soon to tell. 0
