These guys have hated lots of sun so they are in a spot that only gets some late evening sun. Temps are nice and hot here in the tobacco belt and my palms are growing like crazy. I have dypsis from Jamaica and Dominican Republic collect. Vestiaria are from seedman

Does anyone have experience with Queen palms indoors? I'm thinking of adding a couple to the landscape, but bringing inside for 3-4 months of the year. My living room is south facing and double height. Or can they go in dim light in the garage?

After repotting my Joey, it was time to repot the L. peltata var. sumawongii. I adopted these both in 2017. The sumawongii was starting to need water more frequently than once/week, was pushing a new spear, and showing roots at the pot’s drainage holes. Also, the sumawongii was likely getting jealous of its brother Joey’s new larger pot . As you will see in photos below, it has been 24 months since it was repotted. First photo dated 2017 and the remaining photos are June 2019 repotting time. At first I thought the new pot would be too big, but once the root ball was in the pot it seemed just right. There was enough room to add fresh media below the root ball and abo…

V joannis and spiralis roots
by SilverDragon- 6 replies

So I have a few joannis and spiralis seedlings that are doing quite well in some one gallon pots, bit now a few have roots coming out of the bottom. Should I transplant them to a deeper pot? If so, I'd really appreciate it if someone could link me a site where I can order the deep black square pots I see many growers using on here.

I hate pots

I have been trying to get rid of all of my pots for years now. We like to go camping off grid now for weeks at a time. We have over the last few years reduced our propagation, to be free to travel in the van. We only grow them to give away to our friends/neighbours and have reduced it from 100's, to scores, to now just dozens of pots. Half of them are ready to give away now. Being such a mild climate here, plants can go into the ground much earlier than in a lot of other places. After one more summer most of the rest will go and maybe one half a dozen may go into the ground squeezed in somewhere here. My last ones include, Ch. Arenbergiana (fine leaf for…

Bought a good looking Chinese fan from a local nursery. Gonna put it on my back patio that is part sun. Any suggestions on care? Also if you could take a look at the pics provided and let me know if there's anything I should be aware of? I'd like to separate them, but could I do that?

Pindo in a pot questions
by newtopalmsMD- 2 followers

I have a pindo (from a big box store last Sept on clearance. ) It was in a 5 gallon pot (or maybe smaller). It's now in a ten gallon pot full of Miracle Gro all purpose potting mix (plus whatever the big box store used in its smaller pot). I have been roundly chastised in other fora for using MG and peat in general. So now that it is time to move it to 15 gallons, what should I use as a medium? Since I live in zone 7a (with a bit of a 6b-ish micro-climate where my palms are planted ) this Pindo will forever be living in a pot, and be moved out of the really cold (into a garage with grow lights) during the winter. Also I have both a 15 inch tall and a 12 inch tall 15…

Garden question
by petquack77- 2 replies

Hello everyone, So I've been working on my garden and it's coming really nice , but there's is something that bugs me the most in the garden. I would like to cover this ( see pic) in my garden. I'm no expert ,but I'm guessing it's the water meter? Anyways my plan is to put a potted plant in front of it to cover it so if a maintenance person ever comes out to check on it they could just move the plant out of the way to check or work on it. Of course there's no way I'm going to tamper with it being that I don't own it , such as paint it. Any ideas on how to cover it or make it blend into my garden? Suggestions on particular potted plants that I can use cover it ? I…

I've been looking for a Kentia Palm for sometime now, but all the nurseries in my area only seem to stock Majesty, and occasionally Areca, or Bamboo palm. Most people seem to agree that Kentia and Parlor Palm are the best houseplants, but I can't seem to find either of them for sale anywhere in my area. It seems people would rather buy a cheap Majesty palm, even though its chances of survival when grown indoors aren't that great. I understand that Kentia and Chamaedorea Elegans are slower growing, and thus more expensive, but I'd be happy to pay more for a palm actually suited to being a houseplant. Does anyone know of a nursery or other retailer in the Mid-Atlantic that …

Palms in Miracle Gro potting mix issue

I have planted several cold hard palms (Trachy's and Sabals in 3 and 5 gallon pots) in all purpose Miraclegro all purpose potting mix with the idea of letting them overwinter one more winter before polanting in teh spring. But I have discovered that this mix is low in potassium and some trace nutrients. Has anyone else done this and then emended the mix by adding nutrients? If so how much should be added? Or should I just find a better potting mix and repot? Thanks

Chinese fan palm as die backs
by newtopalmsMD- 2 followers

Hi, Separating (partially) some big box Chinese fan palms and planting them as die back in zone 7a. Some are about 2 feet tall to frond tip, and others have petioles that are 4 feet with pretty big fans. Should I expect the smaller plants to never really get any bigger than they are (kind of like hostas)? Should I expect the big ones not to regain their petiole height but continue to produce large fans? (Just thinking of where to locate them) I assume there is no special care for these things. Just lots of water (especially since its July!) and slow release palm fertilizer? Then after the really cold weather starts cut them to the ground and cover with leaves…

Just picked up a 7g bottle palm
by Rickybobby- 17 replies

Today I finally got a chance to pick up my new hyophorbe lagenicalis. The health of all the palms of the nursery looked good. Too my surprise when I yanked it out of the pot to put it in something more decorative I noticed a huge amount of I think slug eggs. So I hosed them out with warm water for quite a while and I’m prettt sure I got 99 percent of them. Hopefully everything works out. For now the palm will be in my palm room for two more weeks. At that time the lows here will start to get warmer. Our days are beautiful right now but just a few odd days of high 30s are enough to keep it inside

Looking for suggestions for a potted plant that does well in Houston summers and it would get full sun . Doesn't have to be hardy at all as I can bring it inside for winters. Right now I have a bottle palm that treat in this manner which loves our summer heat and humidity. I really wanted a burretiokentia viellardii but don't believe it could take full sun ? I'm open to all ideas and if you have pics of your potted palms that works even better =)

W robusta seedling leaf tips turning yellow
by SilverDragon- 8 replies
So my biggest W robusta seedling has been doing well, but recently it's leaf tips have been turning yellow. It's in a pearlite peat mix and gets light for at least 8 hours a day from grow lamps. Additionally it is on a heated mat with others. I water it when it gets dry, which is almost once a day. Maybe I'm overwatering it? Pot size? Should it go outside perhaps? Help is appreciated.

My indoor container ranch has transitioned outdoors

This is year 2 for me doing an indoor ranch. Last year I kept everything Indoors. This year I have in vested in a folding table that I can put in the shed in fall. So anyway here is my palms minus trachycarpus which are still inside and my (picks) are in decorative pots by the pool. The spot has been chosen for a few reasons. Eh it’s on the east side of the house in a courtyard. So it’s sheltered from the strong west winds here. Also it will get some sun from 10am till mid aft and give them shade as well. But I’m hoping the heat will be good we had a bad cold wet spring but now we are good into summer. 80s everyday and I hope to get them to take off more now than they wer…

Germination of palms 2
by petquack77- 4 replies
Hey guys, I just started my second germination of palms which is a retry from the failure of my first. I think my main issue was watering too much. I don't want to mess this up and had a few questions before retrying again. Here are my questions. 1) How many times do I water the seeds? once a day? once a week? And how much water do they require? 2)how much light do the seeds require a day? 3) what is a good temperature setting to having on my heat pad? 4) I bought plant growing soil discs that are used for plants and flowering. Do these work with palm seeds? I'm growing a few Washingtonia Robustas and Windmill palms . Thank y…

Yellowish Dypsis lutescens?

Got this palm (or rather six individual plants potted together) from a garden center a few months ago. Put it in a palm mix (well draining, pearlite, etc) with a little fertilizer (Palm tone). Can't help but feel it's looking a little yellowish or too light green. It hasn't produced any new leaves since I've brought it home, and it's been in the part sun of my northern facing backyard.

Potting Tutorial.. Screens in your drain holes
by Silas_Sancona- 12 replies

Yesterday in a topic made in the main forum regarding concerns related to critters having access to the drain holes in potted palm / plant specimens, forum member @Gonzer made an excellent point, which, for one reason or another, isn't mentioned much.. but is a very valuable technique for helping to keep soil from slowly eroding from pots, and is a great way to keep out insects or other small animals which can get into the soil. Thought i might add to his point w/ some pictures.. While the topic was concerning Bees accessing the drain holes for a drink, here at least ..and in Florida, insects such as Ground dwelling Cockroaches, sometimes referred to as "Sand Roache…

Brown Spots on Phoenix Theophrasti
by acaipalmseeds- 10 replies

It's been a wet year here in Michigan, so I haven't watered as frequently as I would in a normal summer. The soil drains quickly. Do these spots look like a result of too little or too much water? Bad nutrient mix? The soil is topsoil, palm soil, and some manure. It seemed to do great all winter indoors. I read on here that it is a thirstier form of Phoenix, so I have my doubts about overwatering causing a fungus.
