Kentia palms. Are they really good indoor palms? 1 2

Ok, have done searches both here in forums and online. Kentia palms (both species) are usually mentioned as one of the top 5 indoor palms to have. I have a "3 try rule" with palms and will throw in the towel after that but that generally is on species that have little known about them as indoor palms. Kentia palms are gorgeous but crazy expensive to buy here in Nebraska. I'm lucky in that even mail order or when I make road trips to California they are a dime a dozen and pretty cheap to buy. I have tried at least 10? times of various sizes. Some single, others 3/4 in a pot. When left outside in dappled light here in the summer they get very ample rain and…

Hello everybody. First of all, I want to introduce myself. I am a new member. My name is Dorian, and I am from France (that's why my english is not very good...). I live in the savoy region (south east of France, near Lyon). I am passionnate about palm trees for two years, especially Washintgonia palm trees. Here I want to share my experience by telling you about my three Washingtonia in pots. The first (the largest) was purchased in April 2019. It has flourished since then. But I don't know if it's a Filifera or a Robusta. I think it's a Filibusta but I'm not sure. The other two are botanical Filifera (Coachella Valley and Palm Canyon) purchased online from…

Hey everyone here is my two pots of Pygmy dates. One pot has 4 one has 3. Anyways just to show what I do for my indoor winter setup up here in 43 degrees north southern Ontario I put my potted palms over my sump pit and water the heck out of them and not worried about making a mess in a bathroom or clean up. The pump sucks up everything just about. One thing to note and I’ve said it before Pygmys are bulletproof up here. They don’t mind moist roots they survive just fine and grow like weeds for me indoors with no issues

Buying from the Canary Islands.

Hi! I live in Norway, Scandinavia and am looking to buy a Terminalia Catappa seedling (Tropical Almond or Indian Almond). This plant goes by many names so my lack of success in finding a supplier could be down to me searching under the wrong name. These trees are probably sold in the in the US under a different name. I only managed to find one supplier (Canarius.com) based in the Canary Islands. Here is the link https://www.canarius.com/en/plants/terminalia-catappa-tropical-almond.html They have 2 year old plants in stock which they can send to me but I could not find any reviews or anything else written about them online. Has anyone heard of them or could anyone recommen…

I've finally ordered an indoor palm I've always wanted called Licuala grandis, does anyone have any tips on growing this one correctly? Potting media? Lighting? Humidity? I can put it in my sunny bathroom with high humidity if it will be happy in there. Not a ton of growing info I could find. Thank you

Joey palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons) needs repotting

I was wondering why my potted Joey palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons) was not sitting level on the shelf, until I picked it up and noticed roots growing out and under the pot (photo below). Am dreading having to repot it knowing how they dislike any root disturbance. However, last autumn I was having to water it every 4 days or so and it used to be able to go 10 days without watering, so I knew the time was coming for a bigger pot. I last repotted it 2 years ago when I adopted it in April 2017 (Photo below). When I received it from grower it was potted in a wet peaty mixture, awful media for the plant. I repotted it in 2017 and the root ball completely crumbled and …

Nypa fruticans in a pot

I know these are water lovers, would these palms prefer a saucer under the pot to retain extra water so the soil stays extra swampy? I have other palms that thrive on this situation & I killed a couple before I realized this is what they wanted.

Isopropyl alcohol for insect control?
by sashaeffer- 2 replies
I have a nice 3+ foot single Chamaedorea elegans After receiving it and being happy and growing well indoors for 4/5 months and sitting by itself noticed a quick and severe infestation of Mealy bug. To many to remove one by one with a q tip in alcohol so I just added some to a small spray bottle I had and sprayed the fronds and stems really good. Let it sit on there for a few hours and rinsed off. Mealy bugs gone...and no damaged to any parts of the palm so was curious if anyone else has simply sprayed rubbing alcohol on a indoor palm to get rid of any pest? I assume the alcohol dries up the pest thus killing it and possibly any eggs laid as well. I've been …

Greenhouse heating question
by Chester B- 9 replies
I set up a small greenhouse this fall (6x4 footprint) to protect all my small seedlings while I'm growing them out to plant in the garden eventually. These are all pretty cold hardy species (Trachycarpus, Sabal, Butia, Jubaea, etc) but my question revolves around supplemental heat. I have insulated the greenhouse with 1/2" bubble wrap and have installed one string of C7 lights (I have extra strings) that are plugged into a thermocube that turns on at 35F and off at 45F. We don't have too many nights a year that drop below 35F and the greenhouse on its own is running 2-3F warmer at night since I've set it up. So is there any benefit of running the lights on a timer ove…

Brown lesions on underside of palm leaf
by Melinda G- 1 follower

I am new to palms and need help identifying what is causing these lesions so I can appropriately treat. Please help! Pelagodoxa in container, kept under an overhang, protected from wind, gets partial sun throughout the day. Numerous, very small, raised, brown spots, many of which have a pale tan, pinpoint center. They are only located on the underneath side of the oldest leaf. They seemingly came on quickly although I admit I had not paid as much attention to that leaf as it seemed to be the older, brown leaf that was on its way out. When I look closely at this leaf, the leaf base does have some residual green color so maybe it browned prematurely? I don't know. The…

Moving in with a container ranch
by Funkthulhu- 7 replies

Just wanted to share a happy moment. I'm moving into a Mid-Century Ranch with my awesome lady and she's cool with my container ranch. Decided to make sure she understood what she was getting into by putting all my bigger palms (save for a few still on the porch) in our new Library. Gotta love moving from a north-facing apartment into a house with floor-to-ceiling East windows! (now complete with red cat-bench from which to watch the bird & squirrel channel) Now to find space for all the big stuff still on the patio and all the seedlings!

Lady Palm transplanted....
by Cancundude- 2 replies

......I may have screwed up. She was in the same pot for 6 years. The original pot was narrow and very tall. For the life of me I could not find a similar larger pot so had to go with what I could find. The problem was to fit in the new pot I had to remove about 10% of the bottom of the root ball. Have I done a major bad? All the new suckers have come up in the last 6 months so for the most part always has been a very healthy plant. If I have done damage any suggestions on how I might mitigate that damage? Also would I be correct in assuming the older growth will be what is impacted? I wouldn’t mind the lower growth to catch up to thicken up the overall look and match the…

Lipstick palm transplant
by Cancundude- 0 replies

Hey guys I am wanting to repot my palm into the same pot. I believe the soil is to compact and she is not getting the oxygen as the leaves are very pale green. I have had it now for about 14 months and in that time she has put out 4 new fronds. Northeast window floor to ceiling so some great morning light. But ya my gut says my first mix was to dense and not enough drainage. Sooo question is can I knock off or gently wash the old dirt around the outside of the root ball to get some new mix among the roots? Suggestions pleeease. Oh and can’t seem to keep more than 4 healthy fronds at a time. New one spreads out and the 5th one dies off. Thanks is advance!

I have a handful of dates, CIDP, Bismarckia, and sabal palmetto seedlings in containers - how much cold can the seedlings handle? It’s starting to dip to near freezing (34f / 1c) in Austin over night. I suspect the S. palmetto would be fine year-round, but I’m not so sure about the rest.

Thailand/Costa Rica Coconut from Store
by Dartolution- 22 replies
- 2.3k views
So on a whim, I decided to buy two coconuts from the grocery store today. One is from Costa Rica (the smaller dark brown one) and the other is from Thailand (yellow/tan one). The one from Costa Rica was dry/room temp. The one from Thailand was refrigerated with this weird plastic pop top (or what appeared to be) attached to it. (see pics). I don't have high hopes for the Thailand coconut but thought what the hell. The one from Thailand also sinks. Not sure about the one from Costa Rica yet. What do you guys think? I was going to attempt to germinate both. Thoughts? Ideas? TIPS? haha

Deathly Majesty, seriously...
by Dartolution- 2 followers

So first a disclaimer: I know this palm is in SERIOUSLY dire shape and probably won't make it, but lets take a look at it anyway. This Majesty, (purchased from a BB store), which is over 9 years old has been seriously neglected for the past 7. No repotting until now, no fertilizer at all, barely enough water, and placed under an old old oak tree for half the year, and in a dark basement for the other half. I've recently "re-adopted" this palm and the ONLY reason I am even attempting to save it, is for sentimental reasons. It has tried to trunk, as you can see in the photos, but now has a major case of the hand of death that's wra…

How much perched water is too much?
by rabblemire- 5 replies

Is it normal to be able to tip out extra water with coarse mixes? And if you are able to, is it even necessary? I ask this because I recently planted several parlor palms in a mix that was roughly 50% pine bark, 40% turface MVP, 10% perlite. I'm really happy with how quickly the water drains through, but I'm still not sure what to think about the amount of water that the mix seems to be hanging on to. After letting gravity do it's thing, I'm able to tip the pot and get a pretty significant amount of water to drain out. What's more concerning is that gently moving the pot up and down produces just as much as tipping, if not more. I wanted to try and reproduc…

has anyone used "Pot Umbrellas"
by Shiveringtropicals- 5 replies

Hi everyone. during the winter it can rain for weeks on end without any sun and I try to use this to keep my washingtonias from becoming to wet during the winter and getting root rot. its hard plastic cover connected with stainless steel bolts to the rim of the pots. i also kept some space between pot and cover so i don't get any molt or mushrooms growing in between them. however the large leaves seem to catch a lot of rain so they don't seem to be very effective yet as the pots are still quite heavy. has anyone else tried this in wet areas. i think it looks rather nice.
