Hedyscepe Canterburyana as a Houseplant!

Back in September, I was looking for a palm that would work best as a houseplant, and on September 25, 2023, @Darold Petty messaged me asking if I would like to experiment with a Hedyscepe as a houseplant. And of course, I said yes because that would make such a unique and fun experiment, and I'm really grateful to have a chance to try one of these. Not too long after, it arrived, and I was able to pop it into a clear plastic cup so I could see the roots develop, which Darold already had sprouted when he sent it to me with a tiny sprout on it. I didn't change anything for this palm, and I didn't give it any special lighting other than what it gets from the window. Th…

Palms in pots

I just bought two Florida Thatch palms on clearance at Lowe’s and they seem relatively healthy. I am leaving to go up north for the summer and was just going to leave them in their original pots until I come back and then put them in the ground so as they are not trying to establish themselves in the middle of the heat of the summer. Will they be OK in the original pot for five months?

Indoor potted Licuala Grandis

Hello: I purchased a Licual Grandis plant in March 2024, and replanted to a larger pot with soil and perlite mixture and added extra perlite. I use the slow release food within the soil also. It gets indirect sunlight in a Florida room, but now the leaves are closing up instead of remaining open. Does anyone know why this is happening and how do i stop this from happening? Should I re-pot with new soil? Any reply would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi, I have a Kentia Palm plant in a well draining pot, which is placed inside a decorative pot. I'm not entirely sure why, but it has been leaning for a really long time now and has some drooping leaves. I have done some Google research on the matter, and some people say it's just trying to reach the light...but then does this ever resolve itself and straighten back up to how it was when I first bought it? Can you guys tell me other reasons for why it could be leaning for this long period of time? It doesn't seem like an unhealthy plant, although there are some brown tips on many leaves, and some leaves are yellowing. There was one point around December 2024 whe…

Mississippi Squad 1 2 3 4

I guess it's time for an update. I lost my job in January, lost my car, lost my apartment. Depression hit me really hard. Really hard. Not going into details, but if a friend of mine didn't happen to catch a layover in Texas, I wouldn't be here. He rented me a U-Haul to help me get back to my family's house in Mississippi. I wasn't in the greatest mindset, and I left most of my palms and plants in the apartment. I brought my spindle, C. Plumosa, my L. Weddellaniums, a couple snake plants, a Mangave, and my BxLyto. Everything else was left in the apartment and donated to the staff. They must be happy, because they didn't charge me for breaking the lease or not …

Direct sunlight
by Rio1593- 3 replies

Is direct sunlight really that damaging to the leaves? It's around 20 degrees celsius where I am in UK, and my Kentia is near a south facing window. The reason I moved it closer to the window is because the spot it was in before today was too far from the window. I'm now just hoping the leaves don't scorch, and I'd imagine they'd only scorch if it was hotter weather (25 degrees celsius and above). Thoughts?

Hello everyone, I am fairly new to this whole Palm tree experience but I am learning more and more as I google and stumbled upon different discussions on this site. I have 2 separate Pygmy Dates in pots with 3 trunks on each. I live in NY and when Nov. came around, i wrapped them up with Burlap and a blanket. Kept it in a Gazebo with the walls down so no wind would disturb them. I would water them every other week or so when needed so it wouldn't dry up completely. I kept this going until recently about a week ago, when temperatures started to rise above 50. I took off the burlap and blanket off both and this was the result (as seen in images). I did some research and i w…

A total noob with three pygmy dates

Hello everyone. My name is Voytek and I am a palm noob. I recently moved to South Florida and decided to get some tropical-looking potted greenery for my patio. The patio has reflected sunlight for most of the day; maybe max 3 hours of direct light in summer. Today I got three pygmy dates from a sale at Home Depot. They look beautiful and healthy! I used Google/AI to get some answers to my questions, but inside knowledge is still the best, so I humbly ask this: 1. Based on their (considerable) size, how long can I keep them in these 7 gallon nursery pots while I am looking for more permanent ones? I see one root already coming out of the drainage hole. 2. What a…

The forum heading said palms in pots or container ranch
by happypalms- 23 replies

The heading stated palms in pots does this qualify as enough palms in pots. Iam a hobby grower and collector of anything unusual, rare or just must have exotic plants and I do it simply because I love plants especially palms. Most of this stock will be planted on my property over time. That’s my grand plan for future generations.

Seeking assistance and advice for ailing potted Pritchardia Lowreyana ( "LouLu" ) palms
by Nomad NYC- 7 replies

Hi and good evening everyone, I need help from the PalmTalk experts out there! I grew these Hawaiian Pritchardia Lowreyana ( "LouLu" ) palms from seeds - first year they were doing fine, even during their first winter, only this second winter season indoors they recently started to turn brown and die. I had five plants originally, now I am down to two, and it looks like if I don't reverse this trend, will end up with zero soon... This one bit the dust last week... They were all healthy looking last December, only in the past few weeks have the leaves started turning brown and shrivel up. …

I have recently bought a Dypsis Lutescens to grow indoors, but it only seems to have 2 fronds on each leaf. Is something wrong with the plant or am I getting the name wrong? Does anyone know how to fix this? (I know it's near the heat but it's never turned on)

Does anyone know if this is an obvious and undoubtedly overwatered Phoenix Canariensis frond ?
by Bojan- 2 replies

I've already posted detailed info about this issue, just want to know if any of experienced growers can diagnose by sight, alla minute, is this a classic over watering signature for Phoenix Canariensis, or it might be the signature of a bigger problem. I can't sleep for days. It showed up the next morning after watering, i have it for 6 years, never had a problem with it. This season Its still pretty cold, central Europe, nights go down to 10°Celsius, max daily is 18 °C and there is no heating. It is the lowest and oldest frond, but it happened so fast that i feel like i have to react ASAP. It happened immediately after watering, but the yellowing from inside out is confu…

Will My Windmill Survive?

I’ve had this windmill potted for 3 years and store it in a collapsible greenhouse over the winter. There’s usually no issues from season to season. This year, it LOOKED like it was doing well all winter until I uncovered them this spring. The palms looked dried/fried, yellowing, and folding inwards. There is new growth, but not much movement in the last month. No spear pull. Any suggestions as to what is happening ?

19yo Potted Coconut

I brought my coconut outside for its annual shower! It gets dusty indoors here in Phoenix, AZ. This is my pride and joy. This palm is where my screen name comes from. I bought it from Home Depot in the summer of 2000. It's been moved around the valley from house to apartment back to house a total of 7 times. It gets so neglected I really have no idea what's keeping it alive. It's never been fertilized with anything but dirty aquarium water. I only started doing that in the past 4 years. It's never been repotted. I just fill in the top with new soil when it gets low. It sat in a dark apartment for a few years. It's almost always parked under an AC vent. It currently sits …

Hi Everyone, Just joined like a week ago, been following for pointers before that trying to gain a little knowledge of what I got myself into, this my First Palm. I picked up a Pygmy around 2 months ago and I thought was going good, but..I'll start from repotting him after 3 weeks couldn't get soil tester into soil and roots where poking out bottom so I went ahead from a 10" growers pot to a 12", where I placed on top ring starts 12" with taper to 10", everything was good so last week I started a slow release 8-2-12 PalmGain, it took off after a couple weeks, No fertilizer for 6 weeks, but fish emulsion with watering, avg around 7 or 9 days between watering between teste…

How big a palm could get in a pot?

I was browsing for palms in pots and I saw many really big ones in pots... As I have far more palms that I could plant in ground I wonder How big a palm could get in a pot? could it get to trunk stage ? how old could it get there? Are those big ones in pot grow only in pots or as once someone from a nursery told me " growers got their roots to ground from the bottom of the pots and that's why the get that big...the roots out of pots will be cut and then the pots will be sent to nurseries for sell, so they couldn't get as that big only in pots..." ?

Impressive winter growth for office coconuts (Beijing, China 40 deg N)
by MiamitoBeijing- 3 replies

Hi All, Inspired by some posts on here, I decided to try my hand at some indoor coconuts. I am originally from S. FL, and after a trip home in early 2024, I came back to Beijing wanting a little reminder of home in my office, which is blessed with a large, south-facing window. I ordered two approximately 1 year old coconuts (a dwarf cultivar, but the seller couldn't tell me more than that, still with mostly strap leaves), a bottle palm, a royal and a foxtail. Beijing has hot, humid summers, so these plants spent approximately 4 months outside, growing happily. In mid-September, I had to bring them in, hoping only to keep them alive over the winter until they could go…

Fertilizer for Potted Palms
by Zentaur- 1 follower

I’ve never used fertilizers for my potted palms, but I now I feel like I want to start because I might be missing out in some palm growth gains. I’ve heard good things about nutricote and osmocote, but they don’t sell them in Tokyo where I live. Ironically nutricote is made by a Japanese company, and when I checked with them it seems they don’t sell nutricote in Japan; it’s a product for America. They do sell a slow-release fertilizer but the ratio is 20-7-11-2. Do you think this would be alright for my palms? (Bismarckia Nobilis, phoenix roebelenii, Brahea Armata, Sabal, Jelly Palm, Washingtonian, Sago Palm, Elude, Chamaerops, Canary Palm, Mexican Grass Tree)

Dear all, I'm dying from inside for a month, not having solved the issue yet, although contacted and asked almost all fito medicals and nurseries. Have the plant since 2020, it was 2 meters tall, 1 meter wide that time, possibly more than 10 years old that time. It was all honey and milk since last month and a half. First, the tallest and biggest frond started yellowing from one side to the another, turnung into brown, gray, dark brown, looked like classic over watering sign although i let the soil almost completely dry before next watwring. It's on the North Side, 2 meters from window, having few plants in between, but it didn't mind them for those 5 years, was doin…
