Bacterial colonies on coconut palm leaves
by RoystoneaJax- 10 replies

Hello everyone, do any of you know what these black spots growing on my coconut palm are? They look like bacterial colonies to me. So far they are only only on the palms and do not seem to be causing any damage. What do you all think I should do to get rid of them?

In the greenhaus. Picked the bright red seeds up from under a nice king palm near the beach in National City, CA two months ago. I thought they would never sprout and turn to gunk in the soil.

Maintaining C. elegans

Hey palm pros! To preface, I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to keeping indoor plants. I just recently managed to kill my beautiful Bamboo palm by overpotting in Miracle Gro, so I'm really worried about doing something to create another casualty. My parlor palm is starting to get pretty big, and I'm wondering if I should think about separating the two clumps when spring comes. When I bought it about a year and half ago, it came in a clump of three. I decided to separate one of the clumps into a smaller pot, but I must have done something to upset it. The single clump never really recovered from the transplant and looked permanently sick. Fortunately, the …

Phoenix Dactylifera seeds not giving up the goods?
by RaychHasDatePalms- 21 replies

I have previously sprouted date palm seeds with the method of them wrapped in a wet paper towel, stuck in an air tight baggie, and putting them in a nice, hot window. They sprouted beautifully! We have since moved, and I am working on the same thing now, but with a heating pad instead of a hot window. (My house is about 70 degrees at this floor of the house, so I do need the extra heat.) The only differences I can think of are that I did pre-soak the original seeds for several days or possibly a week. I forgot to soak these ones. Also, the window had sunlight, but the heating pad does not. Not sure how much sunlight could penetrate a wet paper towel, and anyway, I t…

I’ve seen a few Coconuts around Clearwater, and even fewer north of that. I bought a small coconut and planted it in a pot, any advice to keep this palm thriving? I keep it in full sun and plan to bring inside if we get some cold nights this winter.

Preparing seedlings for winter

Thought I'd share my winter setup. From the EPS forum - 13th Oct. 2019: 'I don't want to have a single moment this winter, where I'm thinking about cold nights. At the same time, I'm hoping that I can continue the growing season by providing plenty of warmth and humidity for my seedlings. Measuring just over 2 cubic metres (160 cm x 150 cm x 95 cm) the base is constructed from 47 mm x 150 mm carcassing timber, joined with angle brackets. Inside the base is a sheet of 50 mm thick Ecotherm insulation board. Affixed to the board is a 24 m /120W soil warming cable. Once in situ, and with a 2 cm gap all around for drainage (the base sits on soil covered wit…

Kentia palm germination tips
by Chester B- 1 follower

I've got 20 kentia palm seeds that I would love to have some success with germinating. For whatever reason Kentias are nearly impossible to find around here. The cheapest I've seen is $400 for a 3'-4' tree! I've been looking around and haven't seen specific tips for successful germination. Temp? Baggy vs pots, pre-soak? Strip the husk? Scarification?, etc? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Tricks before bringing in palms

Hi everyone, October is here and I’m starting to think about bringing in my plants soon. I was just wondering if you have any tricks before bringing them in. Do you apply hydrogen peroxide, neem oil, copper fungicide? I kept a few palms in the house last winter giving them some fish emulsion once in a while but this year my collection has grown quite a bit and I have some more tropical z10-11 palms. Any tricks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Geonoma macrostachys 1 2

I recently purchased 30 Geonoma macrostachys seeds from RPS that were pre-germinated and ended up receiving 35. To me, this one of the prettiest Geonomas so i thought i’d give it a try. As most of them had already pushed a first leaf, i decided to pot them up in 0,25l containers with a 70/30 mixture of fine pine bark (2-8mm) and Seramis. Perhaps it might have been better to wait, as a couple of them seem to think about dampening off already. In retrospect i would have preferred germinating them in individual pots and thus avoiding transplanting them at this size. I use Saprol as a fungicide at the moment as i it’s available locally, but am interested in other options. …

Hi guys, Brand new to the forum. Hoping your collective wisdom can help me with my Kentia. It doesn’t appear to know if it’s living or dying. I’ve had three fronds dry out and die. Pictures attached. But yet I also have some new growth, and green leaves. How can my plant be both dying and growing at the same time?? Any ideas what could be wrong with it? Thanks! M

Last indoor palm

All grown up and moving out. We have had this Chamaedorea metallica inside for over 10 years now, it has flowered most years but we cut the stalks off before they got too big and consequently don't know what sex it is. It surprisingly, lived very happily in plain cheap potting mix in that big pot right up until last year when it soil finally became too compacted and soggy and exhausted I suppose. You can see the second last few leaves came out smaller. It had not been fertilized or any soil amendment right up until last year when the leaves reduced size. I then repotted it in a very loose mix. I am now just waiting to see what the flower stalk that is developing is, …

Dypsis cabadae slow growth problem
by Davidl- 0 replies
I have some Dypsis cabadae in one gallon pots for approximately three years. They seem very slow growing having only produced one frond in a year. Some of the new fronds are stunted similar to boron deficiency. I have them in some miracle grow potting soil with a little sand added to keep the pot from falling over. I water them everyday when they don’t get rain and they are in partial sun and color is dark green. I fertilized three times this year but nothing has gotten better with them. Any suggestions?

Hello everyone, and thank you for allowing me to be a part of this group. My name is John and I'm relatively new to growing palms (or tying to..lol). I live in Bay City MI. I currently have 6 Chamaedorea Elegan's (Neanthe Bella Palm) that are growing like crazy. I know these are pretty easy to grow and for a beginner like me I'm pretty happy with the results so far. I've recently started some Hyophorbe Lagenicaulis ( Bottle Palm) seeds, as well as some Psychotria Eleta's (Hot Lip's). I also have an order of Coco's Nucifera( coconut palms), Bismarcka Nobilis (Bismarck Palm's), and last but not least Crytostachys Renda (Lipstick Palm's). My questions are With the winter wea…

Need help selecting pots to re pot seedlings plz

Hi I just received some great looking seedlings from an IPS member. I want to buy some of these tall pots online as box stores don't have them. (I am USA based) Can anybody point me in the right direction on "Thatzone site or that bay site"? Also I have some sand on hand when they installed my pool 4 years ago. Is it ok to use that instead of perlite to repot? Do I mix at 50% sand or perlite and 50% potting mix? Thxs a lot Pat
