I live in zone 7a (Olney MD) and have 2 6 foot cat palms that are outgrowing their 3 gallon pots. (They are about 6 feet tall and falling over with each gust of wind) I want to move them to a bigger pots where they will live outdoors about 1/2 the year and spend colder months in my basement, under grow lights (unless there is a chance they will do well in a 40 degree F garage all winter) What is a good size pot to move them into and what is the best medium in which to plant them? Potting mix? a mixture of sand and potting soil? something else? Thanks

Massive Queen Palm for Chicago?
by ActualTrachycarpus- 33 replies
- 3.2k views
I was recently at a greenhouse oh an hour or so from where I live in Chicago, and found that they had a 10 foot Syagrus Romanzoffiana in a large pot. The price tag on it was only $90 or so, which is extremely cheap (for where I live at least) I have always wanted to own a large palm considering since there are no palms around where I live. I was thinking about making the purchase in mid to late April, and checked the predicted forecast online: (It would stay in the same pot until the first frost, and then I would take it to be stored in a greenhouse) https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/chicago-il/60659/april-weather/60659us?monyr=4/1/2019&view=table It says t…

Hi, I live in zone 7a (Olney MD) and have a butia capitata that is outgrowing its 5 gallon pot. (it's about 3 feet tall with a bit of a trunk) I have no real hope of planting it in the ground permanently so I want to move it to a bigger pot where it will live outdoors most of the year and spend 4 winter months either in a garage or basement (under grow lights). What is a good size pot to move it to and what is the best medium n which to plant it? Potting mix? a mixture of sand and potting soil? something else? Thanks

Archontophoenix flamethrower

Got a PKG of a. Alexandrae seed a year or so ago. 5 of them have done quite well, by my own standards at least. One of them, however, has been putting up increasingly redder new leaves. I've read that this is common while young, especially in cooler spring time, but it's just interesting that one plant would turn out so differently when they have all had identical conditions.

Dramatic Cocos Is Dramatic

We went from browning and whithering due to overwatering to, suddenly, an overnight drastic change to browning and whithering due to under-watering. I tried to make the soil drain easily with cactus soil mixed with lava rock, gave it a bigger pot, and have a grow light on it maybe 12 hours a day or so. It’s in the warmest spot in the house and I have a spray bottle to counteract the current lack of humidity. Then all this. Any thoughts?

Round Pots/Square Pots/Air-Pots?
by Big Eye- 6 replies
- 1.2k views
I've read in rounds that roots tend to circle once they hit the bottom causing the roots to basically suffocate itself? And I'm not sure what goes on in square pots once they reach the bottom but I doubt it can be anything worse than strangling yourself... Are Air-pots or Rootmaker pots used for growing palms? If you tried it, how did you like it? They look really funky but it seems like they do what they were made to do. All I have are rounds and after doing some reading, I'm not sure if I should switch to square pots or even try those air pruning pots. Any insight is greatly appreciated! Mahalo!

Washingtonia Robusta

Hi, Please help, I have three Washingtonia Robusta, I have researched online as much as I can but am seeing so much conflicting information. I brought 2 Washingtonia Robusta or mexican fan palms, and one pot had two growing in one, so I hosed down the root ball and untangled the roots and re potted, the two I split are in smaller 36 cm pots, and one I put into a large 60 cm barrel pot. They came 100cm in height, and looked nice and healthy. as soon as I re-potted them they immediately flopped over and the fronds all closed up. the soil mix I looked up and mixed john innes no.3 and half all purpose compost, which was what recommended on a video I watched. I got …

Potting mix for palms that grow on limestone?

Does anyone have a recommendation for understory palms that prefer an alkaline soil? I am re-potting some 1-gal Chamaedorea radicalis and starting some Cryosophila warscewiczii seeds. Wondering whether I should use a special mix, given that these species are said to grow in thin organic soils over limestone. My plants live outdoors in summer and indoors in winter. Very much appreciate the expertise on this forum.

Hello, I have lurked on this forum for a while while learning how to take care of a majesty palm (my first palm of any kind) which I acquired around a year and a half ago. I subsequently became aware of all of the warnings about keeping them as an indoor houseplant, but I thought that I was doing pretty well with mine until it started encountering a new problem which I am trying to understand. It was sold as a Home Depot plant with several palms in the pot, and over the past few months the smaller palms have been dying off. I am beginning to suspect that I will need to repot the main large palm (and also one remaining smaller palm which I think is still alive) if the…

Can anyone tell me what this is growing from my palm? Does anything need to be done with this? In the past I've just cut them off. Also does anyone know what kind of palm that is? I bought it at the Orlando Florida airport. It was less than a foot tall and came in a box.

I got this 5 gallon sabal last spring. It has done decent considering the conditions. But currently is in my grow room. Warm and well lit. Anyway the newest frond emerging hasn’t reached out yet but all the leaflets droop down. The previous ones were nice and stiff as you can see. What causes this?

My local hydroponics store has clay pebbles coco coir and perlite. Would you guys reccomend this more than say a peatmoss perlite mix? If so do you just mix the pebbles in the soil so it’s all even with the coco coir etc? I want to make some changes this year to my program

Lytocaryum weddellianum - Repotting
by benko- 8 replies

Hello all, I have a Lytocaryum weddellianum growing on my kitchen window sill which is south facing. It has been doing really well and continues to grow through the winter months! I have noticed it's roots are starting to pop out the bottom of the pot, I was wondering if any of you think I should re-pot it in a few months or just leave it in its current pot for longer? I am thinking of getting a Lechuza pot for it with Lechuza pon. I have only been watering when the soil is close to drying out, allowing the water to drain. Also does anyone know how it copes with root disturbance? If you could let me know your thoughts it would be greatly appreciated.

Show us what you have growing for eventual plantings. Here are mine: The empty aquarium works well with the High output T8 bulbs. I haven't set it up yet because I need to swap out the carpet for a more durable flooring. It's a 150 gallon that will house a Malawi predator tank as it was before. Last time it was running it housed Buccochromis rhodesii, Nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus, Dimidiochromis strigatus, Naveochromis chrysogaster, and Tyranochromis macrostoma. This is my original hobby the palm hobby came many decades later. All the palms will one day find a spot in my gardens if I can find room! They include: L. nitida BxJ (BxJ)xS …

After many years of longingly running through the list of palm species at Floribunda, somewhere around April of this year I finally decided it was time to place an order at Jeff an Suchin’s amazing company. I had read so much about it and only good things, so this was going to be the place. On my own I couldn’t reach the minimum order for foreign (non-US) of 300 USD so I placed an appeal on a Dutch / Belgian forum for exotic plant “freaks”, like myself, to join in with the order. This way we could also make the transportation, phyto-certificate, custom/tax costs, and all that a bit more affordable if we would just split the costs. It didn’t take very long before the fir…

Uh oh, my new cocos has mites in the soil??
by RaychHasDatePalms- 3 replies
I am a worried cocos mama right now! Per reccomendations received here, I’ve been waiting to transplant to a larger pot till the weather gets warmer and more humid in my area..... but now I’m not sure what to do! I didn’t notice the mites at all till I watered it, and then I saw them come up from the dirt onto the coconut seed itself. Is this because the tree is growing out of the seed, or (I assume) something to fix FAST? How should I go about fixing it? Thank you so much!

Help with Trachy
by Tom Ace- 9 replies

Hi! I'm worried about my Trachy. The leaves recently started to go dark brown-black, working from the bottom up. Originally I thought that it wasn't getting enough light, but it has really spread quickly. Past couple of weeks has seen 8-10 fronds darken and dry up. Please see pics. What should I do? Was planning on planting out in May. I want to keep it healthy! Note* I had a second trachy in which all fronds turned dark brown when I first brought it inside in November. I had to trim off all of them and leave the spear. That one is growing decently now. Ideas? Thank you!
