First new palm from a new local nursery
by Rickybobby- 9 replies
Hey everyone found about this new local nursery. Massive commercial greenhouse /nursery. Like everyone up here they get tractor trailer shipments of pre ordered palms and extras and keep them until it warms up enough. Anyway these guys care deeply and I should have taken a photo of the palm section. Just awesome. 14 foot coconuts to 3 gallon anything. Same place I posted the flowering roebellini. So my first palm for the pool this year is this nice 7 gallon with 3 adonidias. I’m hoping I don’t over water this one and keep it for a few years !

Pale green lipstick palm

Hola everyone. I am new to the board so forgive me if I don’t yet know my way around efficiently. Anywho I bought myself a Cyrtostachys renda without really understanding palms whatsoever and am not sure if it’s doing well. Transplanted it from a 5 gallon garden bag to a 9-10 gallon pot. Used a mixture of local dirt from the mangrove close to me and mixed it with worm castings 50/50 of my own making, all materials organic sources. I have it in a NE corner with lots of indirect light through out the day and 3 hours of direct sun early morning. The newest palm frond was showing as a 10 inch spike when I brought her home 2 months ago. In that time the new frond has come up …

Rooting Chamaedorea stolonifera

Hi, got a stolon from this Chamaedorea with only a very little root. After searching this forum I knew it's not easy to be rooted. After poting the stolon I wrapped the pot with palm into a big plastic bag, closed it and set this onto a heating mat. Before closing the plastic bag I mad a small black marking on the new coming leaf to see what happens. The new leaf has now grown 5 mm in 5 weeks. I open the bag daily to ensure that the plant gets fresh air. Does anybody know how long it will take to root this stolon? When can I be sure that the palm can be taken out of the bag and will continue growing? Thanks for your help Eckhard

I bought this nice palm today from Facebook marketplace for the low price of $60. Although I drove an hour in the pouring down rain. I feel it was a nice palm that needs some love. I assume it’s a Mediterranean Fan Palm? Anyone have any ideas how to identify?

Hey everyone my local palm green house has a bunch of 15g roebellini that are producing seeds. The owner told me I can have whatever I want. Which is cool. Here is one pic. Do you think they will be viable. I would love to buy one. But I already have some and don’t really need it

Pot Size vs Palm Size & Growth
by Funkthulhu- 10 replies

It is springtime, and a man's fancy turns towards thoughts of repotting his container ranch... Let's be straight here, I'm in Nebraska, I have some "big" palm species creeping past the juvenile stage. . . and my ceilings are only 8 feet high right now. Container Ranchers, how do you decide how big of a pot you will use for each of your species. Assuming everything is deep enough for tap-roots and whatnot, does the pot size help or hinder the size of your palm? In my most recent post I was talking about a potentially sick Veitchia, that little guy is getting a growth spurt right now. Save for the freezing winters, if it were outside it has the potential to get f…

This is my first post to palmtalk. I have read this forum many years. I finally set part of my palm collection "outside" from winter hibernation in garage. When weather gets little bit warmer here in Southern Finland (60 degrees north)I will put bigger ones really outside.

Very sick Kentia Palm - help please

I'm a novice palm owner and my Kentia, who's only been with me six weeks, is looking really unwell. I'd really appreciate your advice... Essentially he looked great when he arrived from the garden centre. I thought I was careful not to over-water. Over the first couple of weeks, he slowly started to slump, with the different stems collapsing at different angles. I staked him as a result. At the same time, black spots began to appear on the leaves. Some leaves died entirely, and I cut them back. The black spots keep appearing though. They seem to appear within the fronds rather than at the tips. He's indoors next to a wind…

Hello wonderful denizens of Palm Talk. I have recently come into the possession of a well-established Rhapis that was a former hospital specimen--a friend of mine is a plant technician and was told to "throw away" this specimen because her supervisor concluded that it wasn't looking the best. Luckily, it was gifted to me since she knew that I loved palms and was an amateur enthusiast. To that end, I am attaching my indoor setup and hoping you guys will give me opinions as to my culture questions. So, the Rhapis sits in front of a north facing window, but is about equidistant from my east and west facing windows--is that too much light? I'm not sure what its exposure was i…

Veitchia Fading/Graying?
by Funkthulhu- 1 reply
I have a couple juvenile palms in a large-ish (3 or 4 gallon? bottom watering reservoir) pot in my apartment. North facing window, but it's a full patio door. These guys have rarely seen full sun and have been slowly chugging away for about 7 years (since seeds were collected in 2012). Now, the largest of the 3 in this pot has started thickening around the bottom (still narrower than my wrist) and its top-most frond almost touched my 8 foot ceiling before arcing over to hang a good 6-7 feet at its highest. No changes to heat, light, water, or fertilizer in the last 3 years. This winter it seems that the fronds are "fading". Or that they're edging into a lighter …

I live in zone 7a (Olney MD) and have 2 6 foot cat palms that are outgrowing their 3 gallon pots. (They are about 6 feet tall and falling over with each gust of wind) I want to move them to a bigger pots where they will live outdoors about 1/2 the year and spend colder months in my basement, under grow lights (unless there is a chance they will do well in a 40 degree F garage all winter) What is a good size pot to move them into and what is the best medium in which to plant them? Potting mix? a mixture of sand and potting soil? something else? Thanks

Massive Queen Palm for Chicago?
by ActualTrachycarpus- 33 replies

I was recently at a greenhouse oh an hour or so from where I live in Chicago, and found that they had a 10 foot Syagrus Romanzoffiana in a large pot. The price tag on it was only $90 or so, which is extremely cheap (for where I live at least) I have always wanted to own a large palm considering since there are no palms around where I live. I was thinking about making the purchase in mid to late April, and checked the predicted forecast online: (It would stay in the same pot until the first frost, and then I would take it to be stored in a greenhouse) https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/chicago-il/60659/april-weather/60659us?monyr=4/1/2019&view=table It says t…

Hi, I live in zone 7a (Olney MD) and have a butia capitata that is outgrowing its 5 gallon pot. (it's about 3 feet tall with a bit of a trunk) I have no real hope of planting it in the ground permanently so I want to move it to a bigger pot where it will live outdoors most of the year and spend 4 winter months either in a garage or basement (under grow lights). What is a good size pot to move it to and what is the best medium n which to plant it? Potting mix? a mixture of sand and potting soil? something else? Thanks

Archontophoenix flamethrower

Got a PKG of a. Alexandrae seed a year or so ago. 5 of them have done quite well, by my own standards at least. One of them, however, has been putting up increasingly redder new leaves. I've read that this is common while young, especially in cooler spring time, but it's just interesting that one plant would turn out so differently when they have all had identical conditions.

Dramatic Cocos Is Dramatic
by RaychHasDatePalms- 20 replies

We went from browning and whithering due to overwatering to, suddenly, an overnight drastic change to browning and whithering due to under-watering. I tried to make the soil drain easily with cactus soil mixed with lava rock, gave it a bigger pot, and have a grow light on it maybe 12 hours a day or so. It’s in the warmest spot in the house and I have a spray bottle to counteract the current lack of humidity. Then all this. Any thoughts?

I have a phoenix seedling sown with seeds in October 2018. So far everything was ok. It stands from the beginning in the south, it has the sun. And suddenly he began to turn yellow. The rest of the cuttings is fine. What can it be and how to remedy it?
