My recent germination projects
by Fusca- 8 replies

These are palms that I have germinated from seed I collected personally over the past couple of years except for the Brahea brandeegii x armata and the Trithrinax acanthacoma I received from DoomsDave. I plan to plant nearly all of them in the ground at some point (many are ready now!) but I plan to keep the Howea forsteriana in a container since it is more shade tolerant. When I bought my house back in December it had zero plants in the yard (other than grass!) I received the seed in photo #21 that my boss brought back from Costa Rica so I have no clue what palm it is. The first leaf came out palmate and it seems to be growing very fast - anyone have any ideas? I pl…

Cool and Cold hardiness seedlings in pots

hello, after a very long hot summer for Northern European standards, lows below 40 F are announced for next week (first time since April 7). Highs are still in the 60s. At what temperature should I take the palms later mentioned indoors? Because I have too many Syagrus romanzoffianas and date palms, it would be nice to know the temperature at which the biggest wimps at least start to get damaged (so I can choose the hardiest ones for planting out) ? Maybe you could write it in this way to get some system in it (you can also suggest a better system) : Name: lowest average maximum /minimum temperature at which the palm won't suffer any damage// ultima…

Lady palm, what am I doing wrong
by SilverMissy- 2 followers

Hello, I got this lady palm for free at a garden center because of how unhealthy it was. The leaves haven't changed and I've had it for a hear and a half now. The leaves have this green-yellow look to them. I have repotted it when I got it and I made the error of going too large of a pot size because of how pot bound it was but apparently they like it like that. Anyway, the leaves have not turned that deeper shade of green as you can see in the older leaves. I've been watering every 2 weeks because of the large pot size but the leaves still look like it has been too dry from the look of the leave tips. I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Any suggest…

Separating Chamaedorea metallica in a Pot
by MGD’s Plants- 1 follower

I recently bought a pot of Chamaedorea metallica, something I’ve wanted to try for a long time. The plants look good, and the price wasn’t bad, but I am concerned because there were actually 12 plants in one pot! Knowing that they are solitary, this bothers me. I actually pulled one small one out and repotted it, but the other 11 seemed firmly anchored in the pot, which is about 9” diameter at the top. Should I try to separate them? Or would it be better to just cut some off and leave a smaller number? What is the most that should be together in one pot? Thanks for your help!

Phoenix roebellini pot question

Hey everyone I bought this palm this year from a local nursery. Actually there are 4 in the clump. The roots were bursting out of the 3 gallon nursery pot and out of the top. So I put it in this decorative pot like all my bigger ones. Probably around 4 gallons. I wonder if maybe I should have put in something larger? It’s in a great spot drainage is great I have some fronds that yellow here and there and a ton of fresh green new spears opening. Just wonder what you guys think I tried to stay smaller cause I learned my lesson about too large of a pot and soil staying wet

What's best guess on low SAFE tolerance temps (excluding windchill) for these palms. Large trachy fortunei in 30 gallon double walled plastic pot with 2' trunk. (last year left outside down to 20F) 6' mule palm F1 in 15 gallon clay pot. (last year left outside to 25F) Small Sabal Palmetto 1.5' in 3 gallon nursery pot. (new additions didn't have last year)

Time to upsize potted B. alfredii
by GottmitAlex- 4 replies
Just picked up fifteen (15 gal.) containers I also brought in several bags of potting soil. Tomorrow is going to be a fun day. From 3 and 5 gallon containers I'm up sizing to 15. (Skipping the 7 and 10 gals). I was looking for the 15 gal. Containers on ebay and amazon, however they are very, very expensive. So I took a trip to a nursery in TJ and they were selling them at $5 USD a piece. I obviously liked the price. The nursery folks did inform me that the price was expensive due to a shortage of the containers. Anywho, the alfies will get a new lease on life.

Weird Worm Things In Slime on Soil
by PalmTreeDude- 5 replies
- 1.5k views
So I looked at the top of the soil that I have my Sabal minor in and there is a weird slime. I thought it was mold or something so I put it in the sun (to hopefully kill it) and when I put it in the sun I noticed it looked like it was sparkling, like water in a lake. I looked closer and there are these tiny worm or maggot things in it. Does anyone know what these are and how to get rid of them? Are they harmful?

Dypsis For Outdoor Pot?
by Butch- 1 follower

I have a 41" pot (15 cu' or about 472 L) pot that I would like, maybe, a dypsis to fill... I had a majesty that went belly up (Overwatering) in this pot at this location... It will get partial sun, growing in to mostly sun... Multi or single I don't care... Looking at ambositrea, baronii, lanceolata, onilahensis... Maybe anything else you could suggest... This will be drip irrigated (broken drip head repaired)... I don't know how well these palms do in pots, so I'm asking the experts ... The palm faces east but the sun will be partially and sometimes blocked by a trailer... The location will be in the far pot in the pic... It is past the eves, so no over head protection …

Help! White fungus on my seedling!
by MoldyKingCoCo- 9 replies
- 1.2k views
So I have sprouted a coconut palm and it was doing well for the first few days. But now the seedling is covered in a white fuzzy fungus, and the coconut also has a few patches of it as well. I am using the plastic bag method for germination due to the fact that the coconut is without its husk. So I can't really lower the humidity or the sprout will die right? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!!

Adonidia help

There are 3 palms in this pot one of the latest new fronds which has been green and healthy I just noticed looks burned. Any ideas. Not enough water? The room it’s in is around 80f all the time humidity 40. It was a shade grown palm and outside it got cooked so I brought it in a month ago to recover and it had been doing awesome. It also gets misted many times a day and sometime I turn a humidifier on.

Potted coconut soil mixture
by Rickybobby- 9 replies
- 1.4k views
This has been a tough one for. Was using promix hp with sand. The sand would just turn to muck and the water would sit there. I’ve thought of going to our family farm and getting sandy soil from there but many pesticides etc have been used in the area and I worry it will hurt the palm. I did worry because my original soil mix was rotting the very small top roots growing out of the trunk so I took the coco out of the pot. The main roots look very white and healthy. So I added in some bark nuggets wood mulch and pro mix. Now the Water drains through very well. Anyone else have any ideas for a potted coconut. Thanks

Hi, I was just wondering if it is okay to leave out seedlings of Needle, Trachy, and sables during heavy rains. I have them in 3x14” cones and have only been watering them indoors. I know palms love rainwater but do you think tho will be too much for the new roots to handle? Thanks!
