Washingtonia filifera damaged. Will it be fine? 1 2

Hello, today I tried to unwrap my Washingtonia filifera, but I found it damaged. It was completely covered with frost cloth for almost three months and the lowest temperature it experienced was -9°C or 15°F for two nights in a row. The fronds were dry and bent to the side, so I had to cut them off. What did I do wrong and most importantly, will it be fine? Location: A small town approximately 30km from Bratislava, Slovakia (Zone 7b/8a).

Kingsport TN Sabal Minor
by Palmerr- 11 replies

Hello! While i was on my way to my school in VA I saw a sabal minor (A very large specimen) On my way there. It is a zone 7B 7A 6B area that has seen some very cold temps i might want to try and collect the seed from it as it is planted near a little Mountain Road stop planted in the wild by a person most likely. there may be some seedlings under it so Ima try and get some during Break and i will plant em in Lexington and see how they do. Anybody know if sabal minor could even grow in that area without any protection in the open (I also saw a very nice 3 ft trunk sago palm unprotected in 7a-7b Appalachia which was really cool. Of course... Lots of Bananas also saw some Y…

Chamaerops and Washingtonia seed questions
by NMPalmjunky- 6 replies
I picked up some Chamaerops and some Washingtonia seeds from Encanto Park in Phoenix which has possibly the greatest concentration of palms anywhere in Arizona. Can someone tell me if all seeds look viable? The med seeds are all the same size, but they vary in color from red to purple to blue. The Washingtonia seeds are also the same size, but some are blue and some are tan. I assume that the tan seeds are sterile, but please let me know if they could still be sprouted.

Palm Hardiness in Roswell NM?
by gdumea- 2 replies

Hi all, I know about various palms around Roswell, the Taco Bell Washingtonia hybrid that looks to unfortunately now be dead, and the W Albuquerque St Washingtonia Filifera, but does anyone know how reliably these palms grow here? I bought some Washingtonia Fayetteville seedlings that hopefully can live without protection. I saw about 6 palms driving around 300 E Albuquerque in front of this guy's yard, Google Street view reveals that they've been around since at least 2007. What luck do you all think I'll have with Washies here?

Palm ID and Germination
by Manalto- 12 replies

This handsome palm sits in the parking lot at the entrance to Crawford Park in Mobile. Is it Livistona chinensis? If so, how hard is germinating seed for this palm? It's loaded with seed and there are several (doomed) seedlings under the mother plant. If not, can you tell me what it is? I can return and get additional close-up photos if necessary.

Trachycarpus variants hardiness
by Stefanus- 2 followers

Hi all, Early this year I purchased the following Trachycarpus seedlings: Trachycarpus Fortunei, Trachycarpus Wagnerianus, Trachycarpus “Takil”, Trachycarpus “Kumaon”, Trachycarpus Princeps “Stone gate”, Trachycarpus Ukhrulensis and Trachycarpus Wagnerianus x Fortunei. For these variants I have read various claims, the Manipur and Princeps would be less cold tolerant and the Takil and Kumaon would be more cold tolerant compared with the normal Fortunei. Does anyone have personal experience with these forms? Is the difference in cold hardiness significant? Stefan

Different sources on the internet say that both of these rattan palms are able to handle temperatures between 20-23F. So I guess these are the hardiest calamoids? Does anyone have these species? How true is this?

I am quite familiar with populations and their extent in my state but how far north does Sabal minor reach in the Gulf South? I know theres a population in Cherokee County, Al, do they follow this latitude until the Carolinas (where the species goes north of 36ºN and 30 miles east of Charlotte) and is there any north of Cherokee County in Alabama, Mississippi, etc?

Post pics of the first palm you planted!

I became interested in palms (and plants in general) as a young 20 year old living in Region IV of the Philippines. After my 2 years there I returned to Oklahoma and collected a few tropical house plants that reminded me of the Philippines. It was a few years later, when I was neck deep in a long college program, that I discovered that there were some cold tolerant palms out there. I bought a handful and received more little seedlings from other enthusiasts in the area. Knowing I wouldn't own a home of my own until after college, I planted my first palm in the ground at my parent's house in East Central Oklahoma. It was a triple Sabal minor that I found at a big…

Washingtonia Filifera leaf yellowing problem
by MarcusH- 9 replies

We had some winter like weather the last few weeks in the San Antonio area with temperatures ranging from 35f to low 80s with a good amount of rain ( light rain to drizzle) . Even after a few days of rain the soil seem to be just dry . I used my moisture meter to check the soil and I was surprised to see my soil was dry . Pulled out the stick , no dirt on the stick. I also cut down on watering my palms a lot . Last time I deep watered my palms were about 10 days ago. Two of my larger Filiferas ( trunk size about a foot) start showing yellowing, especially on one. I know the process of old fronds dying etc. but this came right after some cold mornings ( mid to u…

I figured I'd post this here as they're mostly cold hardy varieties and they'd get more love. Tokyo is another city I don't associate with palms, like London, yet they thrive here.

Well I've caught the palm bug and lemme tell ya, it's been taking me on quite the ride. My property didn't have much in the way of landscaping when I purchased it, just a few small flowering bushes, etc. Nothing exciting, nothing tropical looking. Although the lot wasn't eye catching, it did give me a blank canvas to work with. As a brief overview, I've added some trees to the front yard but didn't do any structural changes. The back however, has received a retaining wall with 3 large planters built into it. This area extends from my concrete patio and serves as both additional patio square footage as well as an area to add some palms and whatnot. Here's what I've …

My Chamaedorea radicalis (Non-trunking) I picked up from John Fairey Garden last year is already showing sex (is this a male or female?) it is currently thriving in a bright full sun from about 11 am to sunset south facing position. If you are able to keep it happy with enough water Chamaedorea radicalis and Sabal minor Dwarfs start to really move quickly. I put a timer inline behind a garden hose sprayer zip tied open set to soak for 3 minutes once midday and once in the middle of the night. Sabal ‘Blountstown dwarf’ (in the first pic at the right) is loving this set up as well.

Possible Loss of Palm tree
by ChicagoPalma- 2 replies

After deciding to cheap out on the wood this year, the new large 8ft tall palm box during a wind storm decided to tip over during a whole night in the single digits but thankfully we put the box backup. Unfortunately I did not wrap the palm with anything this year except 300 mini lights which i thought was overkill but i think it might save the palm. Anyhoo, im not sure if i lost it or not but the spear temp levels read 12f so hopefully it will survive? Any insight?

Sabal Mexicana (Texas Sabal)
by bj512- 1 follower

I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue (I think) with my Texas Sabal palm. For some reason, since the beginning of this year the petioles are curling. While the fronds generally look healthy, I'm concerned that the curling indicates a problem, though I can't find any information about it. I'm also interested to know if anybody here can suggest an approximate amount of water that these palms should get. We have drip irrigation set up, but I've not found any estimate of how much water is needed. Obviously, it's well over 100 and sunny here now, so that may impact the amount needed now, but I'm looking for a rough amount to set the irrigation for in general. Thank you…

Livistonia Species List 1 2

As we did for Trachies, please list Livistonia species from coldest hardy to least hardy. Give two temps. ....one for first sign of damage and the second for death of the palm. Include both F. and C. temp. scales. It will be a nice reference thread for those wanting a quick list of possibilities for their particular climate.

Hello everyone, My winter boxes are very well sealed to protect my palm trees from cold. But I wonder if I need to leave some little gaps/holes to provide at least little air ventilation, even though it can decrease the temperature inside a little? Kind regards, Pavel
