I mean, I guess it's safe to assume they're the mutts, but just so I'll know for sure - Robusta or Filibusta? I doubt they're Filifera. All I know is they were volunteers growing in pure clay in another pot in the RGV from @Fusca

Sabal Louisiana. Sabal Mexicana. I learned the hard way from these to put them in community pots as soon as you see roots showing. 😬 And a recovery project Trachy Princeps from @N8ALLRIGHT pushing out what looks like its first palmate frond.

¡Agua!

It hasn't rained here in freaking forever despite our famous 90% average annual humidity (I actually learned that today while looking at drought maps), and we are not in a drought but considered "abnormally dry." Anyway I went out and watered my green homeys, and I'll take care of my indoor ones after my head quits spinning. My $5 Wal Mart Clearance butterfly bush looks a lot happier in its new home. It's hard to make it out with the weeds, but it's in there. And yes, the flag with the $5 clearance sticker is still on it. When it turns into a behemoth, it'll wear that proudly. The bigger of the Washy volunteers from Fusca. I mentioned in another po…

CIDP Potted up!

My $15 15 month soberversary gift from my mom, this CIDP from a really nice lady on eBay who can't pack a plant for 💩, but I'll probably still leave positive feedback just because she was so nice. I don't remember if this is a 2 or 3 gallon pot, but I LOVE these and I used to have a ton of them - they got left behind in the Texodus. They drain great, they're firm, they came with saucers, really nice. Anyway - Looks like an ideal size with room for those roots to stretch and grow. I didn't take a picture of my super scientific soil mixing process, but I'm low on the good stuff so there's some potting soil, some coir, some gravel, some of the …

How crazy would I have to be

How crazy would I have to be to plant some Caryota Maximus "Himalaya" out here? Obvs talking a few years down the road before they'd be ready for dirt, but I've got plenty of space - and if they survive the winters and end up eventually flowering, they'll be someone else's problem by then. I've read all kinds of conflicting data re: their cold hardiness. I know I've made a dozen posts about not having patience for seeds, but it's seeds or nothing for me right now.

New (to me) CIDP + seeds
by JohnAndSancho- 2 replies

Welp, first off I'd like to voice my displeasure with the United States Postal Service for holding this in Memphis for an extra 5 days. On the other hand, given the way it was packed, I guess I should also give them kudos that it arrived at all and I can clearly see where they retaped it shut from the piss poor job of packing it. Part of me wants to be petty and leave negative feedback, but it did get here in one piece, I did get what I purchased, and I know everyone doesn't package things like Phil at Jungle Music. I swear I've had orders from him with actual lumber to protect the palms, but a literal handful of packing paper ain't gonna protect anything. …

Planting Sabal sp. Tamaulipas

Bought some Sabal sp. Tamaulipas on eBay from the palm hunter. They arrived today so I swung by Home Depot and purchased 2 bags of manure and 1 bag of pine bark mulch. My soil has been amended with enough limestone to get it to 6.5-7 PH and I have verified it in multiple spots. I’m in zone 8a/b and It’s a hard red clay that turns into brick in the summertime. I tilled the manure in, put my (giant) seed on top and mulched over it by maybe 2”. It may be a little late in the season but I can always re-use the planting site if it happens to die this winter.

Saving a Patrick Hybrid 1 2

Okie dokie. I've had a Butia Lyto hybrid I bought from Patrick a few years ago. I was in the middle of a family emergency when we had a freak cold snap down to 9° and bringing plants in wasn't really on my radar. It looked fine until maybe a couple weeks ago. I made sure not to water it days before we were supposed to get a freeze, but there's 0% chance it was totally dry. Y'all know these things are expensive and hard to get. I'll take pictures tomorrow, but I pulled 3 spears. It's still got a few green fronds and lots of brown ones. I've seen larger plants saved by cutting them down. Key word being larger. This one is still in a pot and probably…

My Trachys look really nice , and I think can compete with other varieties as far as beauty is concerned . Some palms obviously are so damn cool that my Trachys can't compete with those cool beautiful palms , but considering everything , like climate , I think mine are respectable when put up against a lot of palm varieties in more southern locations . What do you think ? Will

I was in Orlando this week for work and took Fri-Sat to ride the velocicoaster and make the drive to Dade City and Lake Alfred to see the Acrocomia totai. Dade City - I saw maybe 10 trees in eight different locations around town. All looked pretty healthy. Only a couple, the first and last, really have any spines on the trunks. 1, 2 and 5 grow on the side of the road and are publicly accessible, but I didnt see any seed.

Trachycarpus Fortunei Spear Pull
by OriolesRock100- 1 follower

Hi all, I went out today to check on my plants, and noticed the spear on my trachycarpus fortunei looked a bit off, so I tugged on it, and it came out pretty easily. I was a bit shocked, because I babied it and did not let it stay outside under 25 degrees F at all this winter, and it seemed to make it through the winter unfazed. It looked great, no cold damage on the fronds at all, and it was even pushing out growth immediately when the temps started to warm up. About 2 weeks ago, I repotted it into a bigger pot to give it some more space, is it possible that could have caused the spear pull? Or did I just get unlucky and it caught some fungal disease or something as the…

My most mature Butia fruit fell off :
by WSimpson- 3 replies

I guess I have to harvest the fruit when they change color and before they fall off . They fell off fast . Is that correct to harvest one stalk at a time as they mature ? I thought that the fruit would hang on longer before you had harvested them . What are people's experiences with their Butia fruit ? Some varmint ate them fast too . There are a lot of chipmunks around or maybe a squirrel ? Thanks

Is this a palm weevil on my Sabal??
by palmaddict83- 3 replies

Hey all, I finally got a Texas Sabal planted about a week ago. It's pretty mature. However I saw a black bug the other day on a fronds and sprayed it was captain jack insecticide and went about the day. However I went to inspect it again a day later (tonight) and I saw this bug crawling on the trunk. I hit it with my shoe and killed it. Is it a black palm weevil?? It was less than an inch long. Usually they are 1.5 inches, no? I thoroughly inspected the trunk and all the fronds and couldn't see anything else. The tree looks really healthy (about 2 spears coming out that are dark green). The bottom half of the trunk is "skinned" thus why it looks like tha…

Germinating Trachy Fortunei x Waggy
by JohnAndSancho- 11 replies
Ok so from what I've read, Trachys do not like a lot of heat to germinate. I've also read they like a little heat and a little cooling off? I've also read sometimes they need a cold period. So I've looked, I'm just seeking confirmation. So maybe throw a baggie on top of the fridge? Maybe throw the baggie in a windowsill that doesn't get blasted all day long? Maybe throw the baggie on the floor under the germination station where it'll get a little radiant heat but not cooked? I've also read they're slow, and I'm really bad about helicopter parenting my baggies now so maybe hide them someplace after I've taken my sleeping pills, and have my phone remind me to check t…

New needle palm issues

Hello, I planted this northeast Ohio palms 3 gallon needle palm around 3 weeks ago. It gets full sun from around 7:30 AM to 3 PM and it’s been hot so I’ve been watering every day. I noticed some brown spots on the leaves so I contacted the nursery and they said it might be over watering. Do you think this is correct and how can I reverse the damage? These grow painfully slow and are super expensive so I hope it doesn’t die. Thank you so much!

I decided to create a Journal to share over time for these with culture and temperature data over their lifetime here in 8a. I placed my order for these on April 19th 2020. They shipped April 21st, and arrived today April 23rd. These are 3yr old Syagrus romanzoffiana var. 'Litoralis' seedlings in 4"x4"x14" tree liners from MPOM stock parents I believe [forgot to ask but have sent out an inquiry] that are used in hybridization. Michael has been easy to work with, keeps good communication, and I have received what I have ordered quickly. 1 seedling will be planted 1 seedling will be potted 1 seedling will be given away in…

Sylvester vs CIDP
by JohnAndSancho- 12 replies

I found some seeds on eBay for like $5-6/10 for both of these. Just to recap, I'm in zone 8b in a very swampy part of East Mississippi and I know what the expectations are at this point when growing from seed, but which one would get me closer to instant gratification? Soil is a sandy loam until about 6-8" deep then it turns into clay. I've already read about digging deep and breaking up and stirring the clay and whatnot. Lotsa sun lotsa water. Does it come down to just a personal aesthetics opinion? It seems like both are hardy down to around 15°f once established, and I've got time to figure this out but more than likely I'd put these on the back of the house near …

Bama' Palm Tree fail - any way to fix?

An Alabama mayor planted palm trees. Now a critic won’t stop mocking the failed plan Anyone know what kind of palms the deceased were? This is a bit of a local political brawl, but I wonder if it would be possible to plant mule palms there? I suspect hardy Sabals would also grow there over the long term. Whaddya think? ========================================================================================================================== Wind-swept palm trees lining boulevards in Miami, Los Angeles and Southern California are natural welcome signs to their beaches. Spear pull in summer? Mediterranean fan palm
by palmaddict83- 16 replies

Hey all - I planted this 25 gallon plant 2.5 months ago. For soil, I mixed the native clay with compost and miracle grow palm soil (I'd say it's 35-40% clay soil). Not the best combo looking back but I thought med fan palms can tolerate some clay soil. I water twice a week. Gets full sun from 9 to 5 Used slow release palm fertilizer and also added some moon juice stimulator once a month. 2 weeks ago starting seeing some brown tips on this full green palm on 1 of the 2 main stumps then turned into whole fronds being dark brown and withered. Then I ended up cutting 3 fronds off that were a mix of older and new fronds on the trunk. Few days ago sa…
