Trachycarpus Hybrids observation.
by steve617- 20 replies

A few of the T. Hybrids I have are Nova x Waggie and Nanus x Waggie. I have I think 4 or 5 Nova x Waggie. Their about 1 year old and at first seemed fairly fast growing. I've never had Nova but at this point I don't see any Waggie traits. Also the nanus x waggie I was hoping would be a dwarf trunking palm. Had a couple mention they don't think it will trunk. Still nice. Here is a few pics. Soy assessment is the waggie seems recessive however I have some waggie × bulgaria they seem like they may have some waggie traits. However from what I read since the waggie on that cross is the female may carry more of the waggie gene.

Transplanted those 8 footers last week. There is 4 of them. Only one still looks green and the other 3 are turning brown. Anything I should be worried about other than transplantation shock. It’s pretty warm here in New Mexico. I water them with a hose every morning and irrigation in the evening.

Hi all, I found a seller on eBay offering seeds of Syagrus romanzoffiana var santa catarina. Have you had any experience growing them here? Is it too finicky with the heat requirement here? Thanks.

I noticed that there was no growth on my Tifton Hardy palmetto and the spear had turn to a straw color . I gave it a tug and sure enough it pulled right out . If the palm doesn't make it , I can at least make a broom out of the center part that pulled out lol . Below is the spear that pulled out . I put a mark on a stick after pushing the stick downward till I hit hard tissue . Below is a couple weeks ago . Below isa picture taken today . I think it's growing . My larger HC Palmetto had only a little tip damage . Below is an overview picture of the palm . Thanks for looking . …

What is the lowest Temperature a Mature Mule Palm Has Survived

Hello, after the February 2021, freeze, there should be enough data out here to determine bxs ultimate hardiness. Mine have all be trunk cut and show no signs of movement after an official low of 5*. I have not given up hope yet. Even Butia that may have lived ( very few) in the area are not moving much of any either last I noticed. But I will check on those after a few more days.

by Alberto- 2 replies
Butia species occur in Brazil in the Southern Region( Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná) , Southeastern Region ( occurring in the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais), Central Brazil: Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso and Goiás) and Butia capitata in the st. of Bahia (Northeastern Region) Climates varies from subtropical with near frost-free coastal regions in South and subtropical with some frigid / cool winternights on the tablemountains in the south, to a tropical climate at diverse altitudes in the other more northern regions. It is safe to say that Butia eriospatha is originated from the coldest regions on the tablelands of the states Paraná, Santa Catari…

Hello all, I hope you are doing well. I’ve got a short story that, hopefully, will be of interest to at least someone. Today I was checking on some of my Sabal Minor I have growing in pots and I noticed something quite strange with one of them. As I was looking around, I noticed something green poking out of the top of the soil. My initial thought was that some squirrels had unintentionally planted some kind of seed and it had germinated in the pot, so I went to pull it out and I noticed upon further inspection that this appeared to be a new oddly shaped spear coming up. This baffled me, as all of the Sabal minor I own have been repotted twice and…

Top 5 fastest growers 1 2

What is your top 5 fastest growers thus far? I count the new leaves as well as overall growth. Chamaerops Humilis (single plant) puts out a ton of leaves every year but not much overall growth so I didn't include that one. Some palms put out 2-3 leaves & you can see sufficient growth, so whatever growth is to you Here's my top 5: #1 Brahea Edulis (7-8 leaves) kinda lost count on this one. Extremely fast for me. #2 Livistona Nitida (6-7 leaves) same, lost count. #3 Trithrinax Campestris ( unknown amount of leaves) this one put on some good vertical height & girth. Its a double & recently noticed a third pup/sucker? Coming up that I may cut off.…

Lightning strike to palm

It appears my large Filifera got struck by lightning last night. Should I be concerned. My wife heard a large crash last night. I didn’t hear it I was sleeping through it. When I went out this morning there was palm debris everywhere and this huge gouge out of the trunk. What should I do, if anything.

I ordered some plants for this year's new tropical garden and planted 4 colocasia 'aloha', 1 Canna Tropicanna, and 1 colocasia 'coffee cups', also of them will probably survive with the mulch and maybe external heating, Im also getting the palm this week, either wednesday or some other day. I also had a change of plans after talking with my parents and they say it would be better to have the palm in the backyard by the hammock. Currently I have 1 giant calla lily 'white giant', 2 giant cannas, and also 1 more canna tropicanna and 4-5 colocasia 'aloha'. They will be planted in the backyard with some musa basjoo and will make a nice tropical backdrop. Will send pictures lat…

What makes a good palm presentation?

I'm growing about 150 Chamaedorea microspadix seedlings in Solo cups, some of which I am donating to the Mobile Botanical Garden. They're glad to have them because they feel their collection is wanting in the palm department. They asked me to give a talk on palms, presumably because I pronounced Chamaedorea microspadix with a fair amount of confidence (unsure as to whether it's correct). I told them I'd feel like a fraud giving a talk on something I know so little about, but I lined up an excellent local landscaper to speak whose focus is palms. We're going to give the talk together. (I'll play the role of Carol Merrill, sweeping my hand gracefully in front of the palm b…

Palms in Norfolk Virginia
by NBTX11- 3 followers

Sorry no photos. I recently spent 4 days in Norfolk, Virginia and saw several large palms. I was quite surprised. I thought they were contained primarily to Virginia Beach, but this was Norfolk, not VB, and it was also away from the coast a couple miles. I saw several large trachycarpus that were quite tall, maybe 15 or 20 feet tall that had healthy looking crowns, well inland. Near the Beach in Norfolk, I saw Sabals and some type of feather palm. It was quite far away, so I couldn't tell for sure, but the crown sure looked like a phoenix. Maybe it was a Butia, it was quite far away, but the fronds were not curved like a Butia and from a distance it appeared to be …

Mule Palm Initial Watering Requirements
by Cool Mule- 1 follower

Hi All, We just had three field grown mules planted around our pool yesterday and wanted to get some advice on watering requirements at this early stage. They range in height from 12-15 ft overall with 4 to 5 feet of clear trunk. We have bubblers going to each palm that can vary the water output. These bubblers are on a separate zone for our irrigation. Is there a certain volume of water I should be targeting? Planning to water daily for the first few weeks but also want to make sure I don't overwater. My plan was to see how quickly the bubbler filled a 5 gallon bucket and adjust the water rate as needed to achieve the appropriate volume/hour. The palms…

Potted Trachy survived 4f!
by MonkeDonkezz- 0 replies

I will add pictures, but I am genuinely surprised it survived. All I did was put it in a greenhouse and that's it. It even survived when I accidently left it out in the open on my screened porch after a 9f snap. It did suffer spear pull though and lost 3 leaves, but it there is a new spear, though with brown tips, growing.

Radicalis next to pool?
by krishawkins- 5 replies

I planted a small palm (c. radicalis) by my pool - a friend came over last night and I told him I had intentions of doing a row of palms by the pool. He told me not do that he knows someone who had the palm roots go through concrete and destroy the pool. Everything I read online says palms can be planted near a pool and the root system shouldn’t be disruptive. What are your thoughts?

Palms in Iceland
by Alex High- 1 reply

Hello all, It looks like I may have the opportunity to go to Iceland this summer, which I am super excited about. Despite its very high latitude, it's surprisingly mild due to the Gulf Stream, and as such I know a few palms have been planted in Reykjavík. I have been doing a lot of research trying to locate these to visit and film for my YouTube channel, Palm Planet, and I think I have found 3 so far. The first palms I found in an article from 2019, and it says they were planted on Sunnuvegur street, so I will try to find them. Unfortunately the streetview for Reykjavík has not been updated since 2013, so the palms are not visible there. If anyone has any specific de…

I was looking at a map of Houston and most of it appears to be 8B which I found a little surprising as I thought it was all a zone 9 climate. So my question is for the northern suburbs what palms are considered: 1) Completely hardy 2) Marginal 3) Real zone push Thanks!

Is this dumb or why not?
by N8ALLRIGHT- 2 replies

So my needle palm has flowered this year, he's a boy. My cerifera has flowered also, she's a girl. So I'd seen the palm family diagram and Rhapidophyllum and Chamaerops were somewhat closely related. So why not. My needles flowers are on there way out while the blue med isn't ready. How would you go about collecting, storing, and applying to the female when she's ready. Just winging this here, my plan was to cut off the last inflorescence from the needle shake it on paper, fold and store in the fridge. Then apply when she's ready. Pretty much zero chance for any other pollen contaminating this as I'm in Missouri . Thoughts

Welp after a mild winter (I think previous low was 14) an arctic blast 2 weeks ago dropped temps to -6. Protected them with burlap and plastic wrapping, no supplemtal heat, planted in front bed about 4 feet from house. Looks like larger one faired a bit better.
