Winterizing Queen Palm in Zone 8b 1 2

This year in May I've bought a queen palm from HD and planted it in our front yard. Little know did I know about cold hardy palms back then . My idea is to move it away from the front yard reason number one is this side is exposed to cold fronts moving in from the Northwest . There's an area on the side of the house where it's protected. So if I wrap the trunk with Xmas lights and blankets , put enough mulch around the base and deep water it before a severe cold snap (February 2021 )moves in ,is that enough to keep it alive ? To some it might not be worth it but to me it is and I see a lot of people here pushing the hardiness of their palms . I know it gets more comp…

I read a lot that Mule palms can survive temperatures around 15°F to 16°F unprotected on Google. I'd like to hear your personal experience. What's also the least cold hardiness I can expect from a Mule ? I know genetics play a big role.

Will send photos of the garden soon, but right now 4 cannas are or have bloomed and bananas woke up and started to speed up growth, and my calla lily and my other cannas newly planted are speeding up growth. I am also starting my own business, for now I will be selling only one item, which will be a variety pack of canna seeds, one with both dwarf orange/pinkish flowering cannas, and the large canna tropicana. I will also be selling more dwarf canna seeds later on. I will soon start selling palms, and will acclimate them to cold in order for them to keep a good hardiness level. For now I will sell 20 seeds right now, all dwarf canna variety of colors, message …

Butia or hybrid?
by Keys6505- 13 replies

This tree has always caught my eye but not 100% sure what it is. It's growing in front of my neighbor's house which was previously owned by a "botanist" (per the other neighbors). The back yard was incredible when I first saw it but the new owners aren't interested much in the trees so after the past few freezes there are very few remnants left of it's former glory. They usually have landscapers cut the inflo's off this tree right away, but this year they didn't for whatever reason so I grabbed the seeds as soon as they were ready. It looks like I may have jumped the gun a little and some of the seeds aren't completely ripe, but hopefully they are ripe enough. The ne…

Roseburg Oregon Jubaea Palm

Recently on our way down to Port Orford, OR to see the stunning blacklock cliffs, I decided to swing by Oregon's Largest Jubaea palms (unless someone else can show me a larger specimen?) and was Not disappointed. I did not expect the trunks to be THAT big. The owner was outside so I conveniently asked him about them. He says he bought them in Santa Rosa CA. (Santa something…pretty sure he said Rosa) and after a couple decades here they are. The easternmost one completely defoliated when they hit 9°F but recovered nicely since. He was kind enough to let me take some fallen seed home. I’ll give germination a shot 👍 If you’re down in that area, de…

T. Fortunei purchase root ball size
by Palmlex- 6 replies
Hey everyone, My budget allows me to get a $200-ish Trachycarpus Fortunei at the moment. Since I'm ordering online, I don't know exactly how the plant will look, but I have 2 options available and I was wondering what you might think. Both palms are around 4-6'. What would you get? A smaller palm with a larger root ball? (Assuming it fills up the container it comes in) or a taller palm with around 10 inches more trunk but a smaller root ball? Thanks, Alex

This happened a few nights ago it shook my house like a small earthquake hit and temporarily set off multiple smoke alarms inside my house (flood of ions?) simultaneously as a loud explosion sounded! Neighbor reported a reddish to yellowish flash that lasted “several seconds” knocking out his internet for around 10 minutes. Prior to the lightening strike this Washy looked in textbook form and was perfectly healthy, before the top of the crown (now completely flat) was vaporized and blasted into a million pieces all over my neighbors yard along with the corkscrew spiral scar that tore through the entire trunk all the way to the ground as pictured below:

Wild Sabal(?) ID?
by JohnAndSancho- 3 replies

Hey y'all, Can y'all id this wild green homey? It's growing on my mom's land in the middle of the woods in East Mississippi. Has an inflorescence - I tried to get closer, then I saw one of those big black and yellow spiders and uhhh me and Sancho don't do big spiders. I'm guessing it's a Sabal variety and it's obviously been here for a while.

How to create hybrid palms

Hi all, I'm sure this question has been asked a thousand times but I'm coming up empty on my Google sleuthing. Does anyone know what the rules are about what kinds of palms can be hybridized with other types of palms? Can palm shaped frond trees be hybridized with feather shaped frond trees? Has anyone tried to hybridize a needle palm with a date palm to create a super cold hardy date palm looking tree? Or maybe a windmill palm/pindo hybrid to create a more cold hardy pindo variety?

Huggins Island is located across the intracoastal waterway from Swansboro, NC, and it faces the inlet between Emerald Isle and Bear Island. It was home to a Confederate battery during the civil war, but is now uninhabited. I recently explored the maritime forest there and took some pictures of the Sabal minor I found growing wild: Some were beginning to develop above ground trunks (croc for size reference) I noticed that most were growing in close proximity to the coast, rather than in the interior of the island. Does anyone with more knowledge have an idea why that might be?

Help with new Mules - time to worry?
by Cool Mule- 1 follower

These mule palms were planted back in June and seemed to be getting well established until recently. All of them had some yellowing and frond damage at install (cracks near the trunk where it looked like they were tied up too tight). They each lost several fronds that yellowed before turning brown within the first month. Recently, the palm on the end has shown more yellowing than the others and the center spear appears to have some yellowing as well. All three have shown new growth and the two on the ends have had two spathes emerge. The palm with the most yellowing had an inflorescence bloom which I cut off a few days later. Each palm has a d…

My new Chamaedorea Radicalis (Trunking variety) is currently transitioning from San Diego green house life to Coastal Texas sunshine by receiving dappled sunlight for the last 3 weeks under a temporary shade I rigged up. I was planning on leaving it up for at least a month. I had to go out of town for 6 days (my Lady was left detailed watering instructions) and I am thrilled to report that all my Palms (in ground as well as my Bands, 1 G, 3 G & 5 G pot container ranch) were all green and growing vigorously upon my return home. Especially my Chamaedorea Radicalis… 😃

Just thought I'd share my experience here in Accomack County on Virginia's Eastern Shore growing palms and cycads. We are at the colder end of Zone 8a with average winter minimum temps of 10-15°F but we do get a few winters every half decade or so where we might get a few days or a week of temps down into the single digits or below (-5°F). We are colder up here than down in Cape Charles or Virginia Beach. Roses in Cape Charles will still be blooming at Thanksgiving when up here all the trees including the pecans have already dropped their leaves. In Virginia Beach there's lots of spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) growing on the trees but here I only know of one woods…

Mature Sabal Louisiana in Raleigh, NC

I was at Juniper Level Botanic Garden in Raleigh, NC, which is the garden of Plant Delights nursery. I saw a great example of a mature sabal Louisiana that was about 8ft tall. I haven't seen many examples online so I figured I'd share. Based on the Plant Delights cold hardy palms blog post, I'm thinking this was planted around 1999,
