Sabal Palmetto in 7b - 30+ years from seed - is finally trunking

I collected seed from some Sabals at Vistana resort near Orlando around 1990 when we took out daughters to Disney World. One has been in the ground in Williamsburg, Virginia since a few years later (after growing it out in pots). It's in partial shade, but it has taken all of 30 years to begin to form a trunk this year. Here are a few shots. Not a way to quickly establish a palm, but it is rewarding to see if finally beginning to get some vertical growth.

Hello everyone! I've heard from many so many sources that Jubaea chilensis is the hardiest of all pinnate palms. Lately, I've been browsing Dave's Garden, and according to it Jubaea is hardy to zone 8b, while lesser known Phoenix theophrasti is hardy to 7b. There is 1 zone difference, too much for a statistical mistake. I created a quick summary Excel chart with the hardiness info of some popular cold-hardy palms from Dave's Garden web site. And I have two questions to our comminity now - how reliable is information from Dave's Garden web site, and if choosing between Jubaea and some Phoenix species, let's say Phoenix theophrasti for example, what would be a better choice…

Spear pull protocol..

Well it's been almost 2 months since the last major freeze. Nearly all roebelinnis, majesties, queens got the spear pull going on. The last of em are just now spear pulling. Nasty fungusy smells coming from the larger queens that are spear pulling. Some smaller roebelinnis, cat palms and majesties are melted to the ground. Not much hope there unless they are able to sprout from rhizomes. My main question is for the bigger queens and majesties. They have spear pulled but it's complicated because I don't know if it's too late since they started pulling weeks after the freeze event, and there's fungus smells all up in the holes. And on top of that its been raining off and on…

Hey y’all, I figured we should have a tab for zone pushing, there was a lot of talk around what people do to make their favorite tropical landscapes in colder zones. For me I’ve stuck with sabal minor, needle palm and trachys but would like to try more in pots, maybe a cabbage palm or just send it with a queen palm here on the coast of Maine, Zone 6. Share your pics and zones, don’t forget the locations. palms I have in pots

It's blooming from foliage at ground level. (shot from above; inflorescence out-of-focus) Does this mean it's the non-trunking type, or might it still develop a trunk?

I have a silver saw palmetto that I planted in too much shade. It is surviving here in Z8a but not thriving. It is also getting swallowed up by the surrounding much more vigorous vegetation. I would like to move it to a location with much more sun. Do they transplant well?

Canary Island & other Date Palms
by Banana Belt- 10 replies

Observation: One of the growth habits of the CIDP is when getting older they tend to have at the lower end of their trunk an exposure of what appears to be roots trying to form. The older the palm gets the more and higher up the trunk these aborted roots are exposed. Question: Why is that? Are the palms pushing themselves up exposing more roots to the air, or do these roots begin to grow at the bottom of the trunk where leaves once grew? Theory: I can think of one theory explaining these exposed aborted roots which would be that date palms grow in desert areas such as North Africa where drifting sand can easily bury the lower trunks of palms in sand. Could…

Guerilla planting in nearby wadi
by Phoenikakias- 2 replies

I have a surplus of Phoenix theophrasti (super orange boots) and Chamaerops cerifera x vulcano seedlings. So I decided to plant 3 of former and 2 of latter on the banks of a local wadi in the hope that they will fend for themselves thank to wadi hidden moisture during summer. Every hole was provided for a good start with water retention jelly and a handful of osmocote.

Where to purchase Trachycarpus Nova?
by knikfar- 1 follower

Three years ago, I purchased three trachycarpus nova from North Texas Cold Hardy Palms, which no longer exists. I planted them together in a triangle pattern. Two of the palms look fantastic and have put on a lot of growth. The third has been struggling, hasn't grown much and recently spear pulled. A frond also came out with the spear. I trunk cut it and applied copper fungicide but have had zero luck doing that with other palms in my yard. I can't seem to find anywhere to purchase a replacement. Can anyone tell me where I might be able to find one to purchase? Seed are available online but that would take forever for it to catch up to the other two. Any direction anyone …
