It was only 20f in Mudgee a few mornings ago. It would be interesting to see if it had any effect on these palms. Nothing serious I expect, but maybe some foliage burn?

I drove down a random street in a neighborhood today in Roswell and noticed these 3 Sabal palms. The only palms I have ever seen in Roswell. I had just posted a pic yesterday of a Sabal palm in Alamogordo NM and I said it was the only Sabal palm I’ve ever seen in New Mexico and then today I spot a few more. zone 7a-7b im sure they would look decent with some care and trimming.

Strange find inside Pindo Palm

Hi everyone, I came across some strange orange junk inside one section of my pindo palm tree. This particular Palm did have some cold damage and I did treat it with peroxide and also fungicide. There has been steady new growth which is good. I’ve also seen some issues with ants at the bottom of the trunk. This new find is just really weird, it’s almost sticky but without any foul smell. Any ideas on what it could be?

Summer recovery...

Evening all After what was a long, wet and at times usually cold winter, a decent start to summer very welcome. Despite building a make shift cover to keep off the rain and bubble wrapping the pots to keep out the cold, my first winter with palms did not go so well. Next Winter will require more thought.... Out of 6 palms, I had 4 that spear pulled between late Feb and early May. They were promptly treated with Hydrogen Peroxide, with additional treatments over the following weeks. Over the last week or two there has been sudden / tentative signs of recovery. My Butia Odorata and 2 CIDP's didn't fare too well. All 3 were badly hit and spe…

East Texas native sabals...

I wanted to start documenting native sabals on our newly acquired ranch in East Texas... I checked the county map, and we are next to a county listed as having native sabals but seems like we have some popping up way in the back, within a stones throw of a spring fed stream running through the property. This area during the wet wet months certainly rushes with water, and floods a bit for sure given how the grass was pushed to one side. I couldn't think of a more perfect place for some native sabals to grow.. We were doing some basic exploring of the property (so much more to do, haven't even scratched the surface) and how perfect was it that I happened to stumble u…

Chamaerops Update

Just a quick update on the Medi… January 21, 2023 This morning… Bouncing back much better than the Trachy…lower trunks really doing well…large trunk fronds are quite small but guess the developing ones on the inside took a hit too…been a very weird sort of spring (or normal? usually we fly right into summer)…chilly 50’s at night, 70’s or low 80’s daytime…very DRY and the smoke from Canada’s wild fires blotting out a fair amount of sunlight may be slowing the Trachy a bit but looks to be clearing today. Hope other recoveries are going well…very impressed with this trooper!

I always like to post a picture of my Butia when its inflorescences open . It's been flowering for 3 years now . I had some frond damage last winter and so it looks more like a Phoenix after clipping back some of the dead off of the fronds . From an inside the house window : A closer look : A front look . The Chamaerops is growing well now too : A closer view . They just pop open fast . :

About two months ago I had a big P. canariensis planted by a local landscape company (they estimated it weighs about 7000 pounds!). Since then I have removed 6 big fronds that were totally dead and brown, and many more are dying back from the tips. I am worried that it will not survive, or if it does, it will look sick and unattractive for many years. All my other palms are doing well, there are no obvious signs of disease, and I have kept it well watered, so I am guessing it may have been badly mistreated before the landscape company got it. They say not to worry, that it is just normal "transplant shock", but I wonder? What is normal to expect after planting a lar…

2 headed Jubaea

I had recently been looking at somewhat overpriced Jubaea and discovered this remarkable specimen. Do any of you know of other multi-headed Jubaea especially adult specimens? I've seen this phenomenon before with Livistona chinensis, but I can't imagine what it would look like on a palm with such broad trunks. Now I'm a little bummed that I didn't buy it🤔.

I am gutted. A 15 yr old jubaea in ground for 8 yrs is seriously ill with what I believe is a fungal infection. Quick background. We have suffered through 2 back-to-back winters with -13.5C minima. First winter (2021/22) I covered with tarp and rope lights over cold period and palm emerged in good form; no problems. Second winter (2022/23) I did the same thing but I was not in a position to remove the tarp for 2 weeks following cold snap as I was out of town and didn't realize it would be a problem (I protected a large chamaerops the same way; it had no issues). During that time jubaea developed a fungal infection that affected many of the outer leaves. I was hoping …

Cold hardy dypsis 1 2

We need a comprehensive list of cold hardy dypsis, and a list of dypsis that just wouldn't work in the cold so we don't wast time trying. I am going to give this a shot with this thread. Stuff that's already proven itself: 1. dypsis decipiens, 22F, actively grows in the 45-70F range - Norcal Sunset zones 9, 14-17 - Central Florida? 2. dypsis baronii, 28F, grows fast in 45-70F range - Norcal Sunset zones 16, sheltered locations in 14, 15, 17 - Central Florida? 3. dypsis ambositrae,27F?, grows fast in 45-70F range - Norcal Sunset zones 16, sheltered locations in 14, 15, 17 - Central Florida? 4. dypsis onilahensis, 27F? seems to grow in 55F+ range …

Needle palm ID question
by Sean Osborne- 1 follower

About a dozen years ago, I separated this palm from a clump at my father's house in California and took it to Tennessee with me. 9 years ago I dug it up and transplanted it to my current home in the North Carolina mountains. My Dad didn't remember the genus and species, but was pretty sure it was native to NC or Georgia. Since then I'm about 99.9% sure I've ID'd it as Needle Palm, Rhapidophyllum hystrix. The thing is, I say "99.9%" because of the size of the plant: it's about 3 feet tall, and has been about 3 feet tall since at least 1978, the earliest date I can be certain that it was growing at my Dad's house. Everything I read about R. hystrix says that it gets ar…

Freezing rain Texas 1 2 3

What a drop in temperature going from 78° to 35° in less than 24hrs. We expect some freezing rain within the next 24hrs with a low of 30° . We aren't going to be above freezing for a whole day down here in San Antonio. For the second time this winter I covered my palms but this time , since they're all young and small I used trash bags to cover the crown and bud making sure water doesn't get inside the bud. Getting already tired of this winter. Are you guys protecting any of your palms ? My palms are still recovering from last winter storm . Wish you all luck.
