I believe last time I posted a few said they were growing one. I would love to see some pictures. It’s one of my favorite hybrids in the garden. It’s the one palm I get the most comments on when people visit. It glows in the afternoon sun. 😎

Help IDing this palm
by gdumea- 4 replies

My neighbor gave it to me, I guess the local nursery in town was giving them away because it's the end of season. No idea what kind of palm it is, it looks half like my Cali Fan Palm and half like my Mexican Fan Palm that's closer to pure robusta. Guessing it's a hybrid, I just want to make sure I site it properly so any good guesses are appreciated.

Wrapping palms during a dry cold event is useless?
by Palmfarmer- 2 replies
Does wrapping a palm in Burlap or frost cloth without and Active heat source protect anything at all if it is just a dry cold with no snow and wind? I can see how one could make a "tent" over the palm with them therefore making it slightly warmer because of ground heat. I do see people on YouTube sometimes just wrapping palms without any heat source really tightly with Burlap. What's your experience?

Anybody growing Trachycarpus Fortunei Winsan? I have one that is about 5 1/2 years old, it is a very fast growing palm it's around 9 feet tall at its tallest leaf tips now. There is not very much information or photos of this palm, I've read that the mother palm has 360 degree fronds but none of seedlings were showing that trait so far. My palms fronds are getting rounder but are not 360 degrees yet. I also read that it is less hardy than regular Fortunei but since I live in Ohio I have to protect it every winter, the lowest my palm has seen unprotected is 19 f. If anybody has any Photos or information about this palm please share. Here is some photos showing the growth o…

Windmill Palm growth over the summer here in Maine

The Trachy has really started to push out more fronds, I finally trimmed off what was left of the damaged ones from 2023s polar vortex. The sabal minor is really filling the space now so I rearranged the Adams needle to keep it from growing into the sabals with a rock wall between the two. My needle palms are showing active growth but very little growth. I weeded around the sabals, added some sand and new layer of autumn red rock around them. Yes I took the picture before I added the rock on top. The yucca rostrotta appeared to have met its maker but after TLC it is beginning to make a comeback.

Nearly 3 years after the big freeze I was wondering how well Phoenix Dactylifera did compared to Washingtonia Robusta . I remember seeing quite a few planted at the Tobin Center but were removed because not all survived but some did. Even before the freeze it seems Phoenix date palms weren't really planted in large numbers at all here in the San Antonio area unlike Robustas. My question is do they share the same cold hardiness? I know of some Phoenix date palms that exists on the Southside. Does anyone know where I can find more of those palms ?

Hey guys, I'm not in Texas, and I am very sorry for what all of you are about to go through with your gardens. That said - I'm interested in seeing the outcomes. Not the miserable carnage, that will be sad - but what curious palms managed to survive and under what conditions? I wanted to create this thread now, before the chaos begins. Once you all begin to feel that cold, and once you emerge from it at the end of next week, please come here and post your pics so we have all of them in one spot. If you can, specify: The species The low you experienced Compounding weather factors like freezing rain, etc. Try not to respond to this th…

Standard Chamaerops Humilis?
by amh- 27 replies
- 1.2k views
I recently bought what I assumed was a standard green Chamaerops humilis var. humilis from a bigbox store, but now I am not so sure. The plant seems to have a blue tint, but it doesn't look like the Chamaerops humilis var. argentea or cerifera pictures that I have seen. Was my original assumption correct or is this some other subspecies? The blue doesn't seem to show up in the evening sun, so I'll try to take better pictures tomorrow.

Wet spot - Which Sabal would you plant?
by Chester B- 25 replies

I have an area of my lawn that always seems to hold a lot of moisture and the grass is very lush and dense. During periods of heavy rain this area can get pretty spongy. Generally speaking it’s a dry area but when we get periods of heavy rain it’s definitely one of the wetter spots. What do you all think are suitable trunking Sabals for this spot. I’ve seen palmetto growing in swamps so I assume they are a good pick. Any others?

Not mine but thought I'd share. This is a clump I got from @Laaz last year that I gave to my buddy. It wasn't protected this past winter so it at one point was covered in ice and saw 19F a couple times. It really is a shame that these aren't more readily available given how tough and tropical looking they are. Maybe one day big box will start offering these

What’s wrong with my windmill palm 1 2

It was looking just fine about 3 weeks ago and then I suddenly noticed the leaves were folding inwards. I have not been doing anything different and the temperature is just right at the Jersey Shore. It’s protected in the winter by a greenhouse and never looked as bad as it does now in the summer months. Anyone have ideas? The second picture is of a new frond coming up and it looks terrible!

Hi, I plan on experimenting with the seedlings of various date cultivars, specifically with their cold tolerance. Which varieties should produce seedlings of highest cold hardiness? Im aware there will be variance through the unknown pollen donor but there must be some relationship between the fruit cultivar and cold tolerance. regards

I was looking up some record lows in Bakersfield, CA and it showed me lots of hrs of 7°F to 0°F on January 28th, 2017. How is that possible that Bakersfield didn't experience any palmaggedon ?Like nothing has happened. Am I misunderstanding some data or what's going on ? How can Queen palms and Washies survive those temperatures but here in Texas Queens would be all dead . Help me to understand this phenomenon . Is the data wrong ?

I'm in the beginning stages of constructing hugelkultur bed for noise abatement and privacy. The bed will be about 65 feet long and about 5 feet high in an area of dappled sunlight to shade, due to these conditions I plan on densely growing various shade tolerant palms (chamaedorea radicalis, chamaedorea microspadix, Sabal minor, Sabal brazoriensis, and Sabal Louisiana ), Asimina species, ferns and to be determined. The yard is a warm 8A (temperature range of 8F to 112F not including last February) and the area is protected from frost by live oak canopy. My question is what other palms will survive in these conditions, can Sabal mexicana handle shade? Any Ideas for deer r…
