Washingtonia in Columbia SC

I was in Columbia, SC this weekend. I lived here for a few years a decade ago and decided to check on some palms around town. Here's pics of three very large Washingtonia - seemed to be doing pretty good! Each has at least 20-25' of trunk I'd guess; they're tall. The first palm is one that Penny has sold seeds from on eBay (I bought some last year). It's near the botanical garden. The second and third pics are closer to/in downtown. The third pic also has a palmetto behind the two Washingtonia.

This palm was planted prior to the Dec 2022 freeze. I can't recall if it was summer 2021 or 2022. The stiff cupping of the leaves was obvious at the time. This survived just as well as the average fortunei here. A nice looking palm.

I'm in Zone 5. Can sand palms survive outdoors in this zone? Getting too large to bring inside.

This was mentioned in another thread so I thought I’d start a new thread so people can share their experiences of them. I planted one about 11 years ago and it strongly resembled pure princeps when it was planted as a 2 litre small plant. It grew rapidly and flowered after only 7 years. It’s a male and it was my pollen that went to Europe and was used as the cross with stonegate form of princeps. So in answer to someone’s question about what they will look like, nobody knows, but it can only possibly look almost identical to princeps. I actually think this ‘new form’ of princeps ( some call it princeps hybrid but we don’t know what it is crossed with, …

Getting this beauty next week(one on left) and was wondering if anyone here had any growing experience with this palm long term. While I have 7 T. Fortunei in the ground here in my climate this one will remain potted(into larger one than shown) when I get it. It has experienced down to 14f in cold frame so far Anyone have one of these long term? Scott/Omaha USA

I’ve got this cute Mexican fan palm and I have the perfect place for it in West Ashley in my elevated yard (dry sandy soil) but I keep getting mixed messages about whether it’s safe to plant here as we are 8b but it is a 9. Still I see what look like a lot of them around and I just wanted to get a vibe from the community at large.

My Texas Sabal has very loose boots, is that a problem?
by palmaddict83- 10 replies

I bought this probably 8-10 year old Sabal and they had the lower half skinned. We just had a pretty big downpour and wind event and the squirrels decided to steal material for a nest or whatever they build and put pressure on the boots to cause them to fall. My boots are now falling apart. Is this common for boots so high up the trunk to be loose? I actually taped some boots back but it's still a mess.. I understand boots fall off on the lower half. The circled part all have very loose boots. Everything above it is still form.

Trachycarpus Fortunei Winsan 1 2 3 4

Anybody growing Trachycarpus Fortunei Winsan? I have one that is about 5 1/2 years old, it is a very fast growing palm it's around 9 feet tall at its tallest leaf tips now. There is not very much information or photos of this palm, I've read that the mother palm has 360 degree fronds but none of seedlings were showing that trait so far. My palms fronds are getting rounder but are not 360 degrees yet. I also read that it is less hardy than regular Fortunei but since I live in Ohio I have to protect it every winter, the lowest my palm has seen unprotected is 19 f. If anybody has any Photos or information about this palm please share. Here is some photos showing the growth o…

September 2025 Garden Update

It's been a long while since I posted anything in-ground, but everything has been doing pretty good! The Needle Palm has been doing amazing as expected! There are now 5 suckers as there'es one more coming up in the front. The Cycas Revoluta seems to be doing pretty good after defoliation. The new flush was definitely smaller than the original size of the leaves, but it should start looking how it did last year with a bit more protection. It even has a little offshoot next to it! The tropical plants part of my garden has also done really well! Well actually not right now cuz of spider mites, but i've been trying to get rid of them lol. The Coloca…

I planted this Washingtonia filifera in March of this year here in Albuqueque, New Mexico. So far it's pushed out five new fronds and one more is about to open. Plus I haven't had any older fronds die off yet. I'm really happy with the results so far!

Trachy princeps fungus
by DH- 2 replies

Trachy princeps, showing presumed fungal inhibition of growth, enlarged basal plate, new side shoot trying to grow. Does anyone have a suggestion for what I can do to free this plant from this pathogen? If suggesting a fungicide, it would be helpful to have specifics if possible, so I have some direction. Western Oregon growing conditions btw. Thanks.

This should probably go in the for sale section, but I figured it would get more traction here. Wilmington NC, B. yatay x Jubaea. Probably 5' overall bragging height. Still at the stage where it gets some winter damage on the emerging fronds, but hasn't had spear pull. I sold my home, and I am moving to the great white nort. Obviously can't take it with me. I'd rather see it go to someone who is as stoked about growing it as I am/was, than leave it to be cut down by someone who dosent know how special it is. I negotiated keeping this one with the buyer, but it needs to go asap. (Dug and hole filled by June 1) PM me. You dig (I can hel…

We are building a new house on the Mississippi Gulf Coast (zone 9a). The house is about 98% done, and we are working on the landscaping. Tomorrow, 12 hours from now, we are having planted: - Four sable palmettos - Four mule palms - One four-trunk bottle palm - One four-trunk pigmy date palm - Various fruit trees (mostly citrus) On the lot there is a pre-existing Mexican fan palm, and two clusters of what we think are dwarf palmettos. I am very concerned about the bottle palm. It was expensive: $260 from Lowes. My wife wants to plant it beside the pool enclosure beneath a second floor deck. It would be heavily shaded here. The area receives a little …

Hi, I have a Trachycarpus Fortunei and all its new leaves are damaged like this. Transparent lines on the leaves, turning brown. Inside the center of the palm I found some beetles, woodlice, European earwig and other I don't know what. There were also some white eggs around. I don't know what happened. The inside of the palm is quite damp. Could the beetles be causing this? Should I use some kind of spray on them? Or is the problem some bacteria, fungus and the beetles are there because of the humidity. Thank you 🙏

Comparing Growth Rates of Various Sabals 1 2
by Scot from SC- 4 followers

I hope that this topic has not been exhausted in some thread that I missed. In addition, I know that location and amount of rain/water, among other factors, affect growth rates. We all know that Sabals love heat, and most would agree that without necessary summer heat, even in an area with milder winters, Sabals can decline or stall out so to speak. Let's assume that the growth rates are based on most of the zone 8 and up areas of the southern United States. I would love to see data from other areas, but I have to go with what I know. My question is, how would you rank popular Sabals in terms of speed of growth. I know the old adage that "The first year they s…

Ok. Started my day off wrapping up some stuff to ship off. Wacky Sansevieria, cutting off of Mom's Rubber tree, a couple Bermudanas and a freebie giant Crape Myrtle branch for cuttings.. repotted the ficus and the snake with fresh Fox Farm because hey, my first customer ever is a repeat customer.. now I need to find a box that the Sansevieria will fit in without snapping 😭 So I come in and sit down for a few, take Sancho out, sit on my culo again and decide to go do more palmy stuff. I very quickly realized that this refrigerator drawer for a Butia tray was a bad idea. Normally, when I realize something is a bad idea I do it anyway, but…

Am in the "Zone-Pushers: Gardening Beyond Your Zone" Facebook group and just stumbled upon this. Apparently planted in 2016 at 3 feet tall. If you go to his page, he has more info on protection as well as pictures. Looks like he's also growing a lot more than just Washingtonia too. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16HzgVX6XM/

Odd Sabal minor growth.

So this minor has been on my property as long as I’ve owned it , about 10 years. They’re a few others but this one has the most unusual growth habit. The others around the property seem more typical in form. They’re all in shade but none of them are clustered or stretched (for lack of a better term) like this one is. I can only conclude that its growth is like this because of not receiving a ton of sun. Regardless I thought it was pretty interesting. It’s about 4ft tall. The fronds are pretty soft and floppy, especially for a minor.

Failing needle palm
by KPoff- 20 replies

Question for the group, see attached pictures below. I planted this needle palm in March and it’s done great all season until about a week ago. It looks like the leaves are drying out very quickly. It gets a deep watering 1/2 times per week and also gets some water from the sprinkler system twice per week. The ground is consistently moist but not soggy. The soil drains very well and everything around it is growing amazingly, even the agave next to it which oddly doesn’t hate all the water. There are two other needle palms in ground to the left in same conditions in the ground since last spring and summer that are doing great. The holly fern by it seems very happy too. The…
