Needle palm
by Landasaw- 10 replies

I’m worried about this plant in Nashville area. It seems the inner Fronds Are starting to yellow too. Last time I saw that the plant died. It seems funny I can keep a windmill, a pindo palm, a sable minor alive here. But this is my second needle.

Best cold hardy palms that grow in clumps...
by CascadiaPalms- 5 replies

Hi Palm Family 🌴😃 Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Just curious what everyone's experience is with this category best cold hardy palms that grow in clumps... I recently just learned about Acoelorrhaphe wrightii (Everglades Palm) -- which then made me go on Google and begin my research. I thought I would turn to you guys....what's the best you have grown? Cold hardy? Speed of growth? Are there maybe some palms that naturally don't grow in clumps but actually do well when you force the issue?

Windmill Palm Growth Problem
by MaxM- 1 follower

I planted a Windmill palm(Trachycarpus fortunei) several years ago(2014) as small seedling. It’s located in Monticello, AR, zone 8a/8b. It has zero protection as it is planted out in the open in a rural area. In the winter of 2022, it received significant cold damage, but growth resumed normal. However after another freak winter, (2023), the plant has now a clustered growth habit with leaves not developing normally. Overall growth seems to be slow as well, as the clustered habit continued all of this year 2024. Has anyone seen this before with cold damage? Had the meristem been permanently damaged or will it eventually grow out if we have normal winters? Any help is great…

I consider myself a hardcore scientist with no belief in anything spiritual or religious. Yet, after these past brutal years, and in my weaker moments, I find myself silently 'praying' to the northern weather spirits, hoping for kindness this year. Am I alone in this? What helps you cope?

Goodnight Sabal minor
by Colin1110082- 2 replies

Hello, today I finished wrapping up my Sabal minor because it’s supposed to get to the mid and lower teens this week and I’ll keep it wrapped until march. I used Christmas lights, a thermocube that activates at 20 degrees, and some frost cloth wrapped around chicken wire. I’m in zone 6A. I put the lights in the center of the palm and used mulch and rocks to hold the bottom of the cloth down and further trap air inside the enclosure. It’s been a pleasure growing palms with everyone and I hope this palm makes it through. Also thank you to @Allen for showing me how to do this properly. This is unrelated but I added a picture of my cactus because how sad it looks from t…

Largest Zone-Pushed Bismarckia 1 2 3

So I planted a Bismarckia this year, and I acknowledge that in 9A with average Jan lows around 33-34 and usually at least one or two mornings between 20-25, I’m pushing it a little. However, there is almost no humidity here, the palm is situated in a spot that gets first morning light, and these morning lows usually last a few minutes before daybreak. We’ve also never had a daily high to my knowledge below 45 in the winter, either. So my fingers are crossed. Anyways - can anyone point me to a good example of a large Bismarckia that is growing in a marginal climate zone? I’d love some info about temps, protection methods, etc. I read about a dude in Florida once w…

Jubaea Palm fruit to seed
by Banana Belt- 15 replies

Today the first fruit and seeds finally produced off the Jubaea Palm I planted from seed in 1984. It took 40 years from seed to mature Jubaea to produce the fruit and seed. 40 years is a long time to get a crop, but thats the way. By the way, can anyone tell me where which eye has the embryo? There are two eyes close together and a third further away.

Surprised to see zero damage to A. alexandrae just on the south side of Jacksonville. Would have thought the cold temps we got this past month would have fried them a little. Wish I had the guts to grow one or two of these.

Jacksonville tropicals

Hey, palm enthusiasts! I wanted to share some information about the tropical palms I’ve planted on my property here in Jacksonville, FL (Orange Park, to be exact). The heights of the palms are approximate, but here’s what I’ve planted: 12' Foxtail 12' Royal 5' Dual Adonidia 5' Triple Adonidia Two 4' Dwarf Malaysian coconuts 5' Queen 9' Queen They’ve all been in the ground for at least a few months—some for about six months. All the palms experienced great growth over the summer, although the foxtail’s growth was leaps ahead of the others. At peak summer, I swear the foxtail would open a new frond wi…

Question on moisture barrier in winter boxes
by PashkaTLT- 1 follower

Hello guys, Most of us make those "double ceilings" in winter boxes where moisture will gather and be prevented from just dripping on the center of the palm. My question is, how much of a gap on the sides of this inner ceiling do you leave? I leave about 1/4" around all sides, but I'm not sure if it's a good gap or not.

Worst Case Moving Scenerio

We are moving within the next couple of weeks. Currently in MA zone 6A moving to MA zone 5B. I have a 11' mature T. Fortunei and a 5'X5' mature Needle Palm (really want to save this one). If the timing weren't so bad I would transplant them and over winter, too late. My plan is to dig them up, wrap in burlap and store in a garage. My question is, how big of a root ball should I shoot for? I was thinking of using 50gal fabric grow containers. I understand there is a chance that they might die but if I leave them it is 100%. Is there a bareroot option? Just looking for any insight. Thanks!

Hey everyone, I'm thinking about doing a thread highlighting the palms growing in and around Myrtle Beach. Of course the area is littered with sabals but I wanted to focus on the butia, washingtonia, trachy, phoenix, etc. that are sprinkled around. There are some well established, mature trees around here that look like they've been doing well for many years. Question is, would you guys rather have the posts broken up by type of palm or just throw everything into the same thread? Let me know and I'll start throwing pics up. Thanks!

Spotted 2 more even larger Washingtonias in zone 8b
by palmofmyhand- 1 follower

I have another spotting in Evans,GA this really gives me confidence in the fact that Washingtonias can thrive in a hot humid zone 8b climate. These 2 in the back of the picture by the house are even larger than the one in my last post. They also have a very nice collection of Pindos, Palmettos, Windmills, and Sagos. The Washingtonias are proof that they can survive snowstorms and temperatures even as low as 11 degrees fahrenheit, as I have also listed the yearly lows for the area in the next picture. I am thinking about growing a collection with as much variety also if I stay in the area and not move.

Help! Windmill palm zone pushing question

Hi 👋 FYI This is kinda long. You can skip down to the end to see the actual question. I included some additional info you may not find necessary. I recently moved from SW Florida to SW Michigan… it’s not that the cold bothers me all that much but I miss the palm trees 😞 Forgive me if this question has already been answered but I’ve searched this site and others and haven’t found my exact question… In SW Michigan, zone 6A, I know I can grow windmill palms if I protect them SUPER WELL WITH EXTENSIVE WINTER PREP like spraying them with a fungicide, tying up the fronds, wrapping the entire palm with heat tape, using a thermocube, wrapping a layer of bu…

How would a CIDP do in zone 6 IF
by COpalms- 7 replies

How would a CIDP do in zone 6 if it had all of these protection precautions; If I planted it facing the south close to a wall protected from north, east, west, and south winds, if I wrapped the tunk in 2 layers of burlap, if I put heating tape around the trunk if I wrapped the crown in 3 layers of burlap if I put the fronds over the crown then put 3 layers of burlap over the fronds (although I don't care that much if it gets defoliated) as well as put heating tape and made sure it had well-draining soil. I know this is a lot of information but if anyone could tell me in their opinion from their personal experience how they think this setup would do I am wanting to hear it…
