Neighborhood microclimates
by General Sylvester D. Palm- 9 replies

So, I went on a website today that gives the current ground temperature of the entire United States. I was looking around my hometown and noticed some interesting things. I looked at two neighborhoods that had strikingly different temperatures. One is slightly closer to the ocean but I think this has little to do with what I am seeing. If you look at these pictures, you can see that there is a bit of a warm bubble around the first neighborhood (Woodbury). Then, if you look at the second neighborhood (Carolina Forest), you'll see that there appears to be no additional heat floating around the air. For some reason, Woodbury is much more warmer than any of the other neighbor…

New Toy Sunlight and Temp Logger
by D. Morrowii- 0 replies

I was looking for a way to get accurate light measurements for fun and for just nerding out on palms . I found these pretty cool data loggers from Onset/HOBO They have some expensive serious stuff but they have these little pendant loggers that you can just bluetooth to your phone as well. The little device can log once a minute for 37 days or so. It exports to .csv .xcel or .png. I got a light and temp pendant MX2202. $80 isn’t cheap but not too terrible either. This data is for a B. condopanna living under a banana plant. I’m logging data for a C. nucele this week to see how much light its taking. by bubba- 0 replies

DewPoint’s of note around the Continental United States ranged from 82°F in Miami Dade near Kendall with most of Florida in the mid to lower 70s. Lower Louisiana averaged approximately 67°F. The lower Texas coast at Laguna vista had the highest at 75°F but had dropped to 46°F by Rio Grande City. The Texas coast through Houston averaged lower 70s° Fahrenheit to San Antonio, which averaged lower 60°F to El Paso at 7°F. Moving westward, Tucson was 15°F, Phoenix was 28°F, Yuma was 41°F, La Quinta was 33°F, Santa Monica/LA was 49°F and San Diego was 51°F. Honolulu was 63°F and Key West was 77°F. Brief sweep globally, I saw 81°F at a Brazilian location in th…

Best/Warmest Microclimate Along the SoCal Coast?
by Alex High- 3 replies
Hello all, I have recently been reading a lot about people's attempts, failures, and also wonderful successes zone pushing with many tropical and less hardy palms in Southern California, and it got me wondering: what is the best/warmest microclimate along the Southern California coast? I have been monitoring the weather in several different cities along the coast for the past couple months during winter to see which stays the warmest, and from what I've found it seems the San Pedro area near Long Beach has highest lows, notably higher than inland Los Angeles and San Diego as well as many other coastal cities nearby. Since San Pedro is facing south, as the coast juts …

Creating microclimates
by ego- 14 replies

I was wondering if anyone knows of any resources on how to alter/create microclimates in a garden. Some kind of a summary of all the things one can do to create a certain microclimate. Especially, obviously, to increase winter temperatures. Anyone knows of any websites, articles...? I searched but didn't find much.

Different microclimate questions
by General Sylvester D. Palm- 1 follower

Alright, I know I've made a lot of posts about microclimates and what to plant there. But, since it is officially spring, I thought I'd do one more, and I don't think I have posted pictures of some of the microclimates I've talked about in the past, so here they are. So, in the picture of the Phoenix sylvestris, you can see more green grass underneath it as opposed to the surrounding area. No, that isn't green grass that was left over from the past summer, it actually emerged first. Could this be a little warmer microclimate or some other factor (obviously, I wouldn't plant anything there, I just want to know for fun)? Then, here is a few places I was thinking about plant…

So I am not exaggerating when I say that this spring has been the coldest on record and the absolute worst that I have ever endured. It has been absolutely dreadful here, even by UK standards. The whole of the UK and most of Europe has been affected by unseasonably low temperatures for about 6-7 weeks now, since early April. The whole of 2021 has been pretty bad for here and the rest of Europe with below average temperatures and snow/freeze events in both January and February. Although March was okay and marginally above average, temperature-wise, both April and May have turned out to be the coldest spring months on record for the UK and most of Europe. I have spoke…

Fall/WInter weather in the PNW talk. 1 2 3 4

New season new thread. So only 3 weeks ago we were in the 80's and now barely reaching 60 the last few days or more. The return of semi-regular rain has been great, but aside from one event where I recorded an inch over 2.5 days I haven't been getting very much. Rain/drizzle seems to be coming through about once a week but I'm picking up 0.05" give or take. It appears that the rain is just that little bit further north, I know Portland proper has had much more rain than what I seem to be getting. I often see the dark clouds but they seem to skirt around me. I dug a hole for a new olive tree and after the top 1/4" the ground was dry. Most days are still sunny …

South Florida turning more tropical?

Hello, As many people know, South Florida has been much warmer than usual over the past few years (summers, winters). Lately there have been many record high lows and high daytime highs. I have seen graphs showing a general warming trend in Miami over the past 100 years or so...it averages out to 2 or 3 degrees warmer than what it used to be in the early 1900s. My question is, do you think this is just because of cyclic patterns of warm and cool periods coinciding with urbanization? Or is this a long term trend? I have read about frosts being somewhat frequent at Fairchild in the 70s and now they are very rare if any even occurr in a w…

Microclimate Conundrum
by General Sylvester D. Palm- 7 replies
So in the past few months/weeks I've observed something quite interesting around my yard. As some of you know, I am very interested in trying to figure out what microclimates are around my house. I've come across a conundrum of my south and north facing wall, and what to plant there. Recently I've noticed, at night, the north facing wall has consistently been around 2 degrees warming that the south, east, and west facing walls. I also want to address the most important thing about this post, the frost. I've observed that the north facing wall gets absolutely ZERO frost at night. I went out there after one of these cold snaps here in the southeast and noticed that there wa…

Why am i considered 10a? 1 2

So I live in Golden Gate, which is basically a subsidiary of Naples and its a few miles east of downtown. On maps it is listed as a 10a hardiness zone, yet the coldest it gets here in winter is the lower 40s with a Cold Front. Winters here are windy however, which brings with it wind chill. Does this count towards the plant hardiness zone, or not? If not, I've NEVER seen it in the 30s here (besides like 2010) without factoring in wind chill.

Heads up! Winter’s still here. Just checking my Dark Sky app for this week here in SFBay/Monterey Bay area and surprised with day temps in 60s to see some morning temps forecast in the 20s for this week. Possible Snow and Hail in some areas on Tuesday. Winds look pretty calm. Here’s the NOAA/NWS Weather Bulletin posted on Dark Sky about it: Here’s text for easier reading: https://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=CAZ513&warncounty=CAC085&firewxzone=CAZ513&local_place1=3 Miles SE San Jose International Airport CA&product1=Special+Weather+Statement&lat=37.3394&lon=-121.894#.YhH8-iQ74lQ

Right, so this has pretty much come out of nowhere over the past 24-48 hours. Two major Atlantic storms are due to barrage into us this week with the first less severe one making landfall on Wednesday evening, affecting northern areas more. However the second more severe storm is due to hit central England with extremely violent wind speeds affecting the whole of the UK. That second storm is the one I am worried about down here in southern England. Potentially 100mph+ winds in the pipeline, looking at some of the models. This is the first, and less severe, storm Dudley that is due to hit Scotland and northern England on Wednesday. This will still bring w…

By a tenth of a degree annual mean minimum (50.1 F), Key West is now zone 12(a) for 1991-2020. Key West is 100 miles from the Florida coast to the north and it's 100 more miles to Bainoa, the coldest town in Cuba where the all time record low of 33 F was recorded (colder than Key West record lows due to landmass and elevation) https://www.climatestotravel.com/climate/cuba "In northwestern Cuba, winter is pleasantly warm, but it's less warm than in the rest of the island. As mentioned, the north-west is the area that, in winter, is more exposed to short and sudden outbreaks of cool air from the United States, which can bring some days a bit cool and windy, …

I know there have been similar topics discussed on Palmtalk in the past. My recent visit to the Miami area, however, has compelled me to want to explore it further. It is usually stated and written that South Florida's climate is subtropical. I would argue that extreme South Florida (and at the very least the coastal Miami/Ft. Lauderdale areas) has a fully tropical climate. Note, the FL Keys tend to be considered truly tropical already, so I won't include the Keys in this discussion. I contend that, based on my first-hand observations of the area's vegetation and weather, as well as climate data available, extreme SE Florida meets all different definitions of a…

The furthest eastern point in the state of Florida is located at Palm Beach Shores, Florida (26.7/80.0356) while Palm Beach, Florida (26.7/80.0364) is nearby. Presently, the Gulfstream/Florida Current is approximately 5-10 miles of from PB and likely closer to 5 miles based upon Miami- So. Fl. NWS Marine Zone forecast. The postulate is that land closer to the Gulfstream/Florida Current experiences substantially higher winter minimum temperatures. A relatively new WeatherStation has been located in PB near the old Blossom property. It is KFLPALMB357 (hereinafter “PB Station”) and is located on the intracoastal side rather than the ocean side. A winter climate comparis…

Man Made Urban Heat Island

Tonight’s GFS forecast is a good illustration of the impact of urbanization. Take a look at forecast for DFW and Austin tonight. DFW airport is expecting 25F, rural areas in the low teens to single digits. Downtown Austin 25F as well, rural area low/mid teens. Whenever I get asked if climate change is real, I say ask yourself if you have ever laid on asphalt in the sun. Yes, it’s real for anyone in a very urbanized area like Dallas, Houston, Phoenix for example.
