Why Southeast US Airports Are Often Cold Spots
by Can't think of username- 19 replies

All my research into why the Tallahassee airport official weather station is such a cold spot has taught me a lot as to why other Southeast US airports are also cold spots. To give those who missed those comments some context, the Tallahassee airport is a cold spot that has colder lows than many other places in the Southeast US because deforestation surrounding the airport leads to massively disproportionate soil drainage and ground/sky exposure that are both apt to make readings colder on the clear, calm, nights that are all too common in the Southeast US. 3 studies have been conducted on the matter and I can recommend all of them. https://www.researchgate.net/publi…

Coconut Palm in Sarasota, FL?
by Emarohl- 1 follower

i just moved to Sarasota and am starting to plant trees in the backyard. I recently bought a small coconut palm maybe about 2-3 feet tall and planted it outside in our yard. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or advice on a coconut palm growing here. I know they aren’t very cold hardy. Our house is less than .5 miles from the Sarasota bay and west of highway 41. The yard gets plenty of sunlight and has good drainage. Will it be too cold for it to survive? Can I cover it in cold snaps to keep it warm? Coldest it got this year in our area was 38 deg. According to maps online we are right on the cusp of 9b and 10a. Wondering if anyone in the area had experience with…

North America Monsoon 2023: The unknown, & Stranger Things... Pt #1
by Silas_Sancona- 0 replies

It's that time of year again when the Southwestern U.S and N.W. Mexico enters the best season here.. The heat, towering walls of dust ..Lightning filled evenings, and humid, Hawaii-esque mornings.. That time of year when somewhat boring dry and thirsty landscapes are magically brought to life and can resemble places far wetter than one would assume.. Unlike prior years, i'm breaking this year's Monsoon thread into 2 parts: ....The here and now, and some personal thoughts on what may lie further out on the horizon.. Some interesting insight on what plants can tell us about weather patterns at certain times of the year as well.. Starting things off... …

Well it looks like we've turned the corner again and had a very brief Spring. I have a chance of some rain tonight but after that it looks like warm to hot and no precipitation. I'm going to have to get the irrigation repaired this weekend.

Watering the garden with HomeKit (for smarthome users)

I installed a micro-drip system from Gardena last week in combination with the Eve aqua. Now the bamboo is watered automatically and it also checks the weather forecast whether it is needed at all. Of course this solution is more expensive than a traditional timer for instance, but it is nice to have it automated so you do not have to keep an eye on it. More for the people that already automated parts of their house. 😇

I didnt quite realize how popular these threads were until this year, so here we are! "Happy" Hurricane Season. We will start off with the forecast for the season, and what we currently have going on out there right now. The forecast from just about every agency or group that puts out a seasonal forecast is calling for an ABOVE AVERAGE season this year. Colorado State University put out their forecast calling for 19 named storms, 9 of those being hurricanes, and 4 being major hurricanes. NOAA has also put out their forecast, and they are calling for 14-21 named storms, 6-10 of those being hurricanes, and 3-6 of those hurricanes being major hurricanes. The a…

United States Severe Weather 1 2

I got bored and started thinking, what if i create a thread specific to severe weather events? I thought about this partly because of the event that has occurred across portions of Texas and Oklahoma today, this activity is spreading over Arkansas as i type this. If you do not know, the Storm Prediction Center has 5 severe weather risk categories. Marginal (1/5) - 5% severe threat Slight (2/5) - 15% severe threat Enhanced (3/5) - 30% severe threat Moderate (4/5) - 45% severe threat High (5/5) - 60% severe threat So what do the percentages mean? Well, say you are under a Slight Risk, this means there is a 15% chance of seeing severe weather within a 25 …

Is it me or are we already way cooler than we should be for early November. I’ve been in the low 40s for lows for over a week now. It’s having a hard time hitting 70 during the day. Hope we don’t have a bad winter.

With Monsoon 2022 now in the books, attention across the U.S. Southwest and California now turns to what may lie ahead for the winter ahead.. After a " decent " Monsoon season here, and some other parts of the Southwest, ..and parts of Southern California, will the trend of the last couple years continue? or, could the 3rd La Nina winter throw some interesting curves into the mix? For the moment, here at least, " Fantastic Fall Hiking Season" has returned as " Sizzle Season " looks to be put to bed.. Warmth will continue for the time being, in the low deserts at least, but, 80s and 90s are better than daily 100+ (++) heat, especially now that nights are trending …

Southwestern U.S. and California Spring and Summer 2023 Wx ....The "Seasons of many questions" ahead thread..
by Silas_Sancona- 0 replies

After what has been quite a remarkable, and completely out-of-the-blue winter, that doesn't seem to want to end as we head into the spring, just what lies ahead this year.. Simply put, lots of questions.. ***How quickly will the low desert snap from our extended mild/ occasionally showery ( and snowy ) pattern, to the frying pan? *** Will California whiplash from the present and persistent cool / cold / wet pattern to hot and dry -by their standards-, or will " Nice / ideal Spring Weather" keep getting kicked down the road until ...June...? If the state does head into a prolonged warm / hot episode, how will this effect how quickly a gi- normus amount of snow…

Anyone here from the Colorado River area?
by Desertlife4me- 8 replies

Hello everyone, I have always been a fan of palm trees, bamboo and tropical plants. I was born and raised in Seattle where I started a palm nursery in my back yard, I had over 400 Chinese Windmill palms growing.....had to get rid of them when I moved. Now I live in Arizona, Mohave Valley along the Colorado River. Elevation is 500ft +/- and growing zone 9B/10A, we get sub-freezing temps, but not a hard/deep freeze and not for very long, usually just a few min-to hours just before and just after dawn. Soil conditions are a mix of clay and sand, very few rocks. Our water table is just 15 feet down or so and the well water has salt (about 1200ppm) along with calciu…

Per @RedRabbit’s suggestion: here’s a thread for temperature screenshots for cold events during the rest of this winter. If we need to further compartmentalize locations: we can further specify or create a new thread that would entail more specific areas.

I heard that the Montebello section of east LA had a small EF-1 tornado touchdown yesterday and caused damage to several buildings injuring one. Supposedly California records an average of 11 tornadoes a year and LA county sees less than one per year. The one yesterday was the strongest one to hit the metro LA area since 1983. I had never heard of one sighted in California before today but it's likely due to the weakness and minimal damage that they usually cause. Makes me wonder how palms would hold up since the vast majority of tornadoes occur in non-palmy areas. I didn't hear any reports of Washingtonia casualties.

Well, a cold front is expected to dip down through here over the next couple of days, with it comes lower humidity and low overnight temps. Even high temperatures will take a slight ding with highs only in the mid 80's in spots early next week. Lows will be in the mid to upper 60's in spots across northern Florida for a couple nights. It will be our first real taste of "fall". Im almost glad, but i know that this is a sign that ill need to break out the sheets and lights in a few months. Unfortunately, this front will not bring anything to central or south Florida besides some rain, which some of yall might not complain about. Anyways, just figured we could jumpstart the …
