Florida Winter 2024-2025 Low Temperature Screenshots

Am making this thread to post larger amounts of temperature screenshots from this winter. I know someone did this last winter I believe and I didn't want to blow up the other thread with them. Lows throughout Northern/North-Central FL this morning at about 7:15 CST. Following 2 are my area showing the colder temps away from the bayou. My house is in a real cold spot because we hit 25 this morning (but am still south of the road outlined in yellow). Destin microclimate But further east into 30a/Santa Rosa/Grayton Beach coastal microclimate isn't as much as Destin proper. FL peninsula working it's mag…

Southern Hemisphere Growing Season 24/25 1 2
by Tyrone- 79 replies

Well it’s the southern spring equinox today, so the days are getting longer than the nights, overall temps are rising and things start to get growing again. It’s a time of weeding, watering and planting. There’s always much to do in a palm garden. For my area winter was a warm and dry event. Not anywhere near enough rain fell during winter and in a basically summer dry, winter wet climate, that’s an issue. However winter had no frost, and I had no cold damage whatsoever. My bananas pushed a flower and started opening on a 3C night! The bananas all set well and they should ripen in time. Even my Chrysalidocarpus plumosa pushed an inflorescence through winter and I’m…

Hello everyone! Its been a long time since my last posts here and given that we now have more than 7 years of meteorological data from the area of Lindos in SE Rhodes in Greece, we can see some very interesting things according to the National Observatory of Athens fan aspirated meteorological station in Lindos. It appears that it is by far the warmest area annually in geographical Europe beating even the warmest areas of the Canaries islands (which are not located in Europe anyways). Below Lindos data the past 7 years that the station is operating. By achieving an amazing 21.89C mean annual temperature it beats even Tenerife South AP station in the Canari…

While folks in SE Florida are swimming in rain, the west central area hasn't seen much rain since the calendar changed to 2023. I don't see much relief in the short term.

This upcoming January 14-16th event is looking more and more like the December 2022 event. Although along the coast they are predicting rain, we are forecasted to be dry through then. I’m seeing 17-19°F predicted in Central Texas Monday night, currently, but based on the last few years will assume it will drop further. Dallas may see 12°F or lower.

California / Arizona / Southwest Winter 2024 -25 ..and maybe a faint glimmer of hope for later on??: It's all up in the air..
by Silas_Sancona- 12 replies

Was going to hold off for another week for some additional data to come in before posting this years thread but decided that i'll add that in later.. Regardless, time for some thoughts on what the winter ahead for CA and the rest of the Southwestern U.S. might hold this year.. Could it be another wet one? chilly ..or chillier? ..or could the current " dry n' warm " theme playing out thus far this fall hold on thru the shortest months of the year? ..And what about that glimmer i mentioned.. Whatz that about??.. ..As the end of the title says ..It is all, up in the air.. While there are some decent indications the current heatwave we've b…

thermal mass Impact of Common Landscape Materials
by kinzyjr- 2 followers

Overview The purpose of this thread is to record observations of surface temperatures and their change over time under various conditions for common landscape materials. Most of us would assume that the borders and other materials we use to landscape our yards are relatively close in heat capacity, with albedo having an impact for the darker materials. This falls in line with the interest in urban heat islands (UHI), since having some of these materials near small plants may give them a boost overnight if they can hold enough heat. Landscapes with a lot of hardscaping may be able to gain a small advantage, especially if the grower is able to cover the plant in a w…

Apple Averages

Not sure if this is new to all, but it is to me. I found out the iPhone weather app has a nice averages chart. Apparently, it uses average data from 1970. “Monthly averages reflect daily highs and lows since 1970. For example, the January monthly average uses January 1 through January 31 for every year since 1970.“ Here is mine for Santa Ana, CA. I know averages aren’t always our best gauge for what to plant, but it is interesting and helps get the imagination going.

Laguna's Beach Washed Away?

Well, things got a bit ugly in one of the prettiest towns here in the Southland. CLICK HERE FOR FULL REPORT LOS ANGELES — Areas just south of Los Angeles — including a tony beach town that saw "rivers coming through" and its main beach washed away — were hardest hit Wednesday by the fiercest of several storms that battered Southern California since Friday. Dozens of homes were hit by mud, at least two people were killed in storm-related car accidents, more evacuations were ordered Wednesday morning, and one rescue involved a man who called from his cell phone as his vehicle filled up with water. Laguna Beach, where homes top $1 million, saw extensive damage a…

Housing developments effect on local temperature?
by HudsonBill- 4 replies

I have been extremely curious on how much a brand new development effects the temperature in the new development. Let's say you had 100 acres of woods and fields and then built 300 houses on it. Would the over night temperature in that development be slightly warmer than before it was developed?

The first freeze of the season is already imminent for much of northwest Europe. A new phase of -NAO (North Atlantic oscillation) and high pressure over the arctic (northern blocking) means that cold arctic air is channeled straight down from Greenland and the high arctic into northwest Europe and Scandinavia. Autumn has been very mild up until now for all of us in northwest Europe, with record high maxes and minimums in many places, but all that is about to change, at least temporarily with the arrival of this arctic blast on Monday/Tuesday. It is looking like quite a significant cold snap for mid-November in some places like Iceland, Norway and Ireland in particula…

GENcast AI weather model
by flplantguy- 3 replies
Has anyone heard about this new AI generated weather model? Im seeing commentary articles about it being pretty accurate to 15 days. They provide the source code at github also under google-deepmind/graphcast. If anyone here is savvy enough with it, you can download the ERA5 dataset and run it yourself apparently. They want it available to anyone so everyone can benefit apparently, but i do not have the know-how to do all of that myself yet (im going to try to learn more though). What are people's thoughts? The accuracy of the data sets on a microclimate level is still poor, so it wont change much for me personally based on the PRISM map data.

Microclimates in Backyard!
by CascadiaPalms- 2 replies
Does anyone have these, can you describe? I was stunned by the "difference" in temperature by putting three different weather sensors in my backyard. Long story short, my property is 0.25 acres, yard is roughly half of that. This could really make a difference in regards to a palm needing certain warmth/cool. The three sensors would typically read like this. These would be the max temperatures of the day. Local temperature on weather app : 83 F Sensor 1 (In the shade entire day, surrounded by trees): 75 F Sensor 2 (on back patio concrete, six feet off the ground in shade behind pole): 95 F Sensor 3 (Inside the yard shed on the wall, bu…

I was doing some web browsing and found an interesting page showing how much hardiness zones have shifted. I'm not sure if this has been posted here before, but I thought it was quite interesting. Closest city to me is Albuquerque, and it lines up with what I've noticed anecdotally. Overview of the research. https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-matters/shifting-planting-zones-2023 See the graphs showing the changes https://www.climatecentral.org/graphic/shifting-planting-zones-2023?graphicSet=Local+Shifting+Planting+Zones&location=Anniston&lang=en
