They mention on the news at noon that they except the weather to continue to be more hot and dry all the way to October. Seem every years we have always been hot and dry, thats what are summers are like. So glad we got all that rain last week when we did.

August 1, 2021 and National Hurricane Center predicts no new tropical cyclone development for next five (5) days. Why is this important? Cape Verde Season for So Fl is August 15 to September 15. Cape Verde Season is the time that the nuclear warheads are launched from the arc of the Sahara towards So Fla (see Andrew). Time is short! Why no action in the Carribean? SAL (Saharan Air Layer) is blanketing the all important runway from West Africa through the Carribean to So Fl. How long will the SAL blanket remain to protect So Fl and the US from the Cat five (5) carnivores that attack and extract like wild hyenas? No one knows. The tropics can turn on a dime a…

Monsoon Season 2021 : Optmism among the great unknown

Tis' that time of year again when heat weary folk start gazing south and east for relief.. When subtle shifts of the wind can usher in one of the most admired times of year in the Desert Southwest and areas beyond. The ominous walls of dust, tropical downpours / flash floods, and incredible lightning displays ..and of course, those sizzling, summer sunsets.. Without it, the desert is dull and everything thirsty. With it, the heat scorched silence is broken and the desert comes to life. This is the Summer Monsoon, a fickle and hard to understand personality who rarely shares all their secrets. After two years of stunning disappointment, there is hope that 2021 wi…

Sprites and Jets.. The rarest mysterious lights in the sky.

Considered adding this in w/a previous thread i'd made about optical phenomena one may see from time to time in the sky but decided this topic deserved it's own thread. When one watches a passing summer thunderstorm, most are awed ( or frightened ) by the sheer power of Lightning. A few of us, myself included, have likely witnessed something more mysterious during especially intense storms, especially when viewed from a distance. Many years ago, i'd read about a class of weather phenomena considered extra unusual and highly suspect... until proven true, by accident. Now, the study of what are referred to as Transient Luminous Events, or TLE's are something ev…

Hurricane Nicholas

I know it formed right before landfall, and it only made it to Cat 1. What concerns me about this storm is the stall. Its going to stall probably tomorrow for at least a few days. The cone turns into a circle indicating a stall. This could be catastrophic. I guess we will find out, but after what we saw Harvey did, this is a definite concern.

2020 Rainy Season starts May 22 @ 6 p.m.

Rainy season in central Cape Coral, FL, commenced Friday, May 22 at 6 p.m. with rumbling thunder and the Whoosh! of a gullywasher that dropped 2" of rain in less than an hour on our parched 0.61 acre of Paradise. That is the most rain I've seen in the past 6 months as we've been in an extended drought. We have 80% chance of rain this coming week.

Gulf Stream shutting down?
by ruskinPalms- 2 followers

I’ve read a few articles here and there that talk about the Gulf Stream shutting down as the climate warms. Fresh water intrusion from melting glaciers in the north apparently decreases salinity and shuts off sinking water in the north that would otherwise flow back south in the deep ocean like a big conveyor belt. They say if this shuts off then Europe and parts of North America are heading for a deep freeze among other very disruptive weather pattern changes. What they never talk about is where does all that warm water go that doesn’t flow north anymore? What are the predicted weather changes at more southerly latitudes in the northern hemisphere? Would it affect the So…

Mindy was a strange bird. Winds not stronger than a strong thunderstorm. West to east is very weird for this time of year. Thank God for no Cape Verde’s this year!

Time for a new thread now Summer is well and truly over. The next three months I have to be careful don't get caught out by a surprise frost, sometimes amount of wind/cloud cover defies even the professionals best efforts to forecast it. From 1 September it gets much easier, to get a significant frost that late needs perfect conditions which are easy to see coming. Count yourself lucky if you never get frost where you garden.

This thread is to discuss potential Florida freezes during the heart of winter this January through February 2021. At the moment, it is looking like the polar vortex over the north pole will be broken up and possibly swing farther south as guidance and computer models are showing this possibility around Mid January. Not trying to incite doom- just a trend to watch right now as much can still change. These are meteorologists I follow on Twitter who are knowledgeable on the subject.

Personal Weather Station - Experiences?

Would love to know what stations everyone uses and their experiences with them. I currently have an Ambient Weather WS-2000 and am potentially looking to upgrade. My parents have also been looking at a PWS, albeit up north which comes with a different set of conditions. My wife vetoed the Davis VP2, but would appreciate any thoughts on the Tempest, WS-5000, or other stations on the market! In fairness, my WS-2000 has shown almost identical readings to a nearby Davis VP2, so no real need to upgrade. Just looking to see what’s out there!

Today marks the end of the Solar Winter for the Southern Hemisphere. (I.e. the 3 months making up the 6 weeks either side of the shortest day...) Farewell. I noticed this at Hagley Park last week. Looks like spring has already sprung. (mind the repost).

Highest Zone / Lowest Cost
by ahosey01- 7 replies

Having repeated flood control issues at the house, my wife and I are considering selling the place and moving somewhere else. Just a thought experiment at this time. Would like to stay in the West if possible. Curious anyone's thoughts on the highest climate zone / lowest cost you're going to find out here? IMO it seems like Yuma, AZ - Zone 10A with reasonably affordable homes. Anybody else have any thoughts? Adam

Oregon Wildfires

We already have a number of fires burning in the state well ahead of schedule. The ice storm we had destroyed and damaged many trees, and then dry hot spring made things worse by drying out damaged wood and killing trees. All around here people are trying to clear out the dead brush, but the tree companies have been working overtime since mid February. I had a fire a few miles from my house the other day in Oregon City, but fortunately they were able to put that one out even though it was on a steep hillside. The most infamous fire, but not the only large one currently burning is the Bootleg fire. Still growing and causing major issues. It has gotten so big it…

We’ve had a bit of rain. 1 2
by Tyrone- 43 replies

This year has been a wet one so far with about 2.5 times the rainfall we had this time last year. On Monday morning my area saw about 55mm of rain fall in 3.5hrs. This made the stream into my property start to flow and all my ponds and dams fill right up and flow into the river nearby. So far at the beginning of May we’ve had our average rainfall to the end of May. I took a few pics.

Need better way than hardiness zone to compare palm viability in different areas
by DreaminAboutPalms- 2 replies
There was to be a better way than hardiness zones to determine which palms are suitable in an area. I think what would make more sense is categorizing places by number of hours annually in each temperature range and also having a multiplier for average humidity, etc. For example: 1.5 * (Hours between 15 and 20 degrees) 1.25 * (Hours between 20 and 25) and so forth. Cities/regions get a score. The reason why is that you could have a 9B climate that averages a high of 39 and low of 28 in winter but is protected by mountains and never drops below that hardly. At the same time take a place like Texas where average lows in January are around 40 but yo…
