Plant Wax signaling Wetter Monsoon seasons for the Southwest ..and Southern California... ahead??

We may be a month into N.H. Winter ( I use the meteorological definition ) but, as always, always looking ahead to the best of seasons here in the Southwest. Sometime ago, i'd mentioned how the UofAZ was involved in undertaking a large study to get a better grasp on what the North American Monsoon cycle might do in a warming world, and see what clues warmer episodes in the region's climate past might offer. checking in for winter weather- related info from a couple local climatologists, i stumbled upon an article related to recent findings that study is tarting to shed light on, which follow thoughts i myself have had, and go against some other wisdom on what driv…

My New Weather Station!
by Xerarch- 7 replies

So I bought me a weather station for my wife to give to me for Christmas. But with this coming cold snap I had to get it set up early so I can get the readings of what (I hope) will be the lowest temps of this winter. It’s the Ambient Weather WS-2000, I have it set up to be visible on the Ambient Weather website. Would like to have it show up in Wunderground as well but that can wait for a convenient time.

The Florida thread inspired me to do one here based off of a happy medium between 1991-2020 averages, personal observation, (which made me do higher or lower in certain areas), and some educated guesses from trends in how the lines go from known areas to fill it in. Definitely in agreement with a narrow band of 9b above Florida and it probably terminates in extreme coastal Charleston County, SC. https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1HHQbCcLVZkxooXPD1H4XC1oWRV8TPbA&fbclid=IwAR0_wNWuCvzHHCzeflSoTdT8MKzZpqR1PyCtRlO7T3KTqyDauBBuBiM5KlU&ll=31.325495808975415%2C-80.68797249999999&z=7

Ground Temperature vs. Air Temperature

Since we are having cold spells all around the world lately (Australia, West + East Coast of Northern America, Werstern Europe etc...), I'm thinking a lot about a subject that from my perception is not so often discussed around palmnuts and exotic growers and I catch myself every now an then not taking it into consideration: The difference between the measured temperature at 2m above the ground and the temperature next to the soil. Especially in the winter this can mean dead or alive for some smaller plants like overhead protection or exposure can. I think it is an interesting topic because like all of the other climate parameters it's not universal and it can differ a lo…

Oregon heat and drought stress on forests.

It’s an interesting read and backs up my own anecdotal observations/conclusions. It’s common to see more dead and dying native conifers each year. Also many of the trees commonly planted in the east or areas with regular rainfall suffer through our summers. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna59671

Help me understand this!

This fall, I got a weather station in my yard. I am at the bottom of a river valley in the desert, and my neighborhood is full of large trees (cottonwoods, pecans, ash trees, cypresses, etc.) because the groundwater is so close to the surface. Many of these trees are not on irrigation and they look beautiful. Anyways - because we're in this valley (and in the desert) the cold air seems to sink down to my property. I find that every night, I am between 28F and 33F. What's unusual, though, is that my temperatures appear inversely related to the rest of Wickenburg. In the morning, when I check my station, I check the local Weather Underground ones also. What I…

Best website for historic low temperatures
by Cody Salem- 2 replies

I've been lurking at this website for years and decided that I should start doing some posting. I wanted to share what I have found to be the easiest place to find data historic low temperatures across the U.S. It's pretty obscure, so I doubt many of you have seen it before. https://wrcc.dri.edu/summary/sodusa.html First choose your state, then you will see a list view and map view of all the available stations. Some stations have more complete data than others, so you might have to check a few of them. Even though the website format is a little outdated, the data is auto-generated, so all of the stations that are a…

I am attempting to understand an anomaly that I have observed in temperature recording stations near Lake Havasu, Arizona (Bullhead City Airport)and Yuma, Arizona. Bullhead City, Arizona is located at latitude 35.15° north and is 547 feet in altitude. The location at Yuma, Arizona is located at latitude 32.97° north with an elevation of 200 feet. Notwithstanding this rather substantial difference in latitude, Bullhead City, Arizona is consistently warmer in the winter months compared to areas surrounding Yuma, Arizona. One prime example is during the 2007 January freeze experienced throughout the western United States. Bullhead City, Arizona (Airport) recorded a low …

Every so often I'll wake up to this around the middle of the night. I check the radar, and it's always from about Cape Canaveral southward, isolated rain bands that bring the occasional downpour. Why does this only appear from Cape Canaveral and southward?

In the Southwest, we wait all year, for the best time of the year.. hating the heat that precedes it, but looking forward to the magic it can bring once the rains begin.. This is the Monsoon.. The most unique of weather patterns in the North American subtropics. ***For anyone curious, i'll defer further insight into the detailed details of exactly what the North American Monsoon is to looking through past year's threads here***. That said, in a nutshell, the word " Monsoon " ..a word of Arabic origin refers to a seasonal reversal of wind direction.. one that often brings rain and raised humidity.. While used too often by miss informed people, the word "…

Are there any other Zone 5a palm growers out there?

I live in Ottawa, Canada. I have been growing palms for about seven years in pots. This year I am trying my first palm planted in the ground and overwintering it outdoors (with protection, of course). It is a washingtonia robusta. If it survives the winter, I will be planting two or three more in the spring. I also want to try a couple of Trachycarpus Fortunei. I am also trying to overwinter some musa basjoo and a dracanea by covering them with mulch. I also have a yucca which has been outside for three years now with no protection. If you have experience with any of these in zone 5a, or less, I would love to hear your experiences. If you want to check out my yard on YouT…

My plant is fueling and I don’t know what to do with the new leaf, I have placed it near the heater that comes on a few hours in the night and by a window, I water once a week as well. Is that sufficient for the plant? mid the soil supposed to look whitish on top like a moss layer?

UK Winter 2022/23 & rainy season
by UK_Palms- 1 reply

I figure I better do a thread for this coming winter so that I am not clogging up the 'what is your current yard temperature' thread again. So far it has been incredibly mild and almost summer-like at times. The rain and unsettled windier conditions have arrived though as the Atlantic oceanic influence has reestablished, taking over from the high pressure, subtropical ridging associated with the Azores high and Csb conditions in southern England. No sign of any cold potential though yet, assuming we even get any this coming winter. ECMWF has temps pushing 26-27C / 80F on Halloween in London and southeast England. A far cry from the weather that we used to experience …

Coconut Palm - Strange Dead Rash Pattern?
by Hempress- 1 follower

Hello! I have a problem with my coconut palm trees as they are developing a dead, lace-like rash (brown dead spots/blotches - not bugs) in a consistent pattern on the fronds. It started when the nights began getting colder in Silver Springs, Florida (Zone 9b) last week 10/20/22 (43 degrees). The only reason why I think it MIGHT be chill damage is because it began at this time. I don’t think it is a fungus because the spots are not watery, blurry or bleed to yellow/dead, but are more sharp, embedded and consistent in pattern. (see pics?). It doesn’t really look like a Manganese or Potassium deficiency and if they were sunburned wouldn't the end/tips and certain areas be m…
