Dilemma with a Bismarkia
by gdumea- 6 replies

So, here's my problem. My Bismarkia is beautiful and in phenomenal shape, but it's getting too big for the pot, the next step would be a massive whiskey barrel or something equivalent. What would you all recommend me do? I'm a desert zone 8a here in NM. It's going to get too big for me to store in my shop or in my house eventually. Do I winterize it and keep it outside, if so, how? Or do I plant it in the ground and winterize it? Any suggestions appreciated.

I collected some Mexican Fan Palm seeds in Phoenix Arizona last year. I was not expecting much but I put them in some soil and waited for anything. They sprouted sure enough and here is my biggest one. I have been growing this palm since January of this year. It is now almost a year old and the leaves are starting to become jagged.

Big palms in small containers

I’m currently shopping for various palms for a landscape job I’m working on, and while shopping for palms at various nurseries, I’m seeing a few large palms that are packed into small nursery containers. They’ve obviously outgrown their pots and should have been moved into larger ones. Will palms in this situation grow up normally when put in the ground, or will they be permanently stunted? I’ve literally seen palms in 5 gallon nursery pots with trunks that fill the diameter of the pot!! They’re probably rooted into the ground as well… Good lord.

Mediterranean Fan Palm Pruning

I just purchased my first palm, a 15 gallon Mediterranean Fan Palm. I reported it into a 20" pot, as recommended by the nursery. My question is how much to prune the base initially. There are a few yellowing fronds, which I assume I should remove. I think they look neater when the base shows a little, but don't want to overprune it. Any advice would be helpful, photo attached.

Hello everyone, I bought a multi stem robusta around 2 weeks ago and decided to divide the 4 stems into one single stem and a trio. After reading in this forum and watching tutorials on how to do it, I divided them carefully and with rarely any root loss. The first picture is how they looked like right after the separation. While the trio still looks the same more or less, the single stem looks desaturated and the leaves are tightened up (like in the two last pictures). It has been pretty cold in the past nights but nothing below 0 degrees Celsius (32F) the new leave seems to still grow and still looks good. What’s wrong with my plant and can I do something to make it …

What’s going on with my Bismarck Palm?
by Juanaramirez- 8 replies

Does anyone have any idea what’s going on with my palm? Does it need more water, soil, fertilizer? New position? It gets about 6 hours of sun. I noticed the middle branch coming out is turning brown and yellow, while the new one is greenish see first three pics :(. The soil is moist and wet and It takes about 7-10 days to dry out. It’s been in this pot for years now so I’m not sure what’s going on. I’m watering once a week and it gets a little drizzle from the rain but not a lot since is protected. There has been some wind in LA so it’s getting a little beat. It has two walls behind it. The plant is on the southeast corner with a wall on the south and…

New Jersey Summer Pot Palms
by JJNJ- 5 replies

I live in southern New Jersey and would like to know what are the best Palm options for large containers in South Jersey. I would like to place 3-4 in XL containers around my pool for the summer. Our summer months of July and August can get very hot and humid with temps in the mid 90's. My pool deck is full sun. I have some growing knowledge but nothing in regards to Palms so any growing advice in regards to daily moisture and feeding would be very helpful. Thank you.

How do I prevent root rotting?
by PashkaTLT- 1 follower

Hello guys, As some of you may know from my other post my Pindo palm has rotted and died, the bottom half of the roots has rotted and the rot went up to the central spear. I could not save the Pindo palm, but upon closer inspection I found out my 2 Pygmy Date Palm started rotting too. Fortunately, they should be fine, I cut the rotted roots and repotted them. I know the main causes of root rotting are: - overwatering - lack of oxygen - fungi I don't think lack of oxygen was the problem in my case, because I buy soil (I usually mix half of special palm soil and half of general purpose indoor plants soil, because palm soil is pretty expensive)…

bonsai Lytocaryum weddellianum as Bonsai

My 10 Lytocaryum weddellianum grown up from seed in 2013 were more and more getting too tall for my desktop, except one (N°1306c) which I had kept quite small by very brutal root pruning. (But even the other pruned palm N°1306a is growing too tall …) Now I am intending to keep my 3 one year young L batavum as small bonsai palms. First, I will keep them as long as possible in their tiny Ø8xH9cm clay pots. Second, I will expose them also to direct sunlight, but watching that they don’t get burned. @Jamesasb , you have mentioned (and posted a pic) one year ago that you are making one of your L weddellianum to a bonsai. Are there already visible and positive resul…

I have been growing a dwarf betel nut palm in Gainesville Fl since early March this year It has been been growing well and is pushing a new spear out, but over the last couple of days one of the lower fronds has turned yellow. I was trying to figure out whether this was within the range of normal of behavior for this palm or if I should be concerned for nutritional deficiencies or even lethal yellowing. I know that coconut palms most often get lethal yellowing, however, there are lethal yellowing equivalents in arecha catechu (I think). What do you all think? Picture attached below.

Chamaedorea genoformis the necklace palm
by happypalms- 7 replies

A nice little trio of chamaedorea genoformis I’ve had these little cuties for 23 years in there containers I should plant them in the ground for some reason I have not done that so far its nice to have a collection of palms in containers you can create a miniature rainforest anywhere anytime you want with container plants I started out collecting plants in containers when I first left home renting not having any place to call a permanent garden so containers become the normal for plants now with a property and a garden container growing is still fun it challenges the grower and you learn a lot from container growing

Can I divide a Robusta with 4 stems?
by ArcticPalms- 3 replies
I took home a Robusta with four stems the other week (and prior to this I thought this species was a single stemmed). Some of the leaves are rather crammed for space in competition with each other IMO. So my question is, is it possible to divide it into 2x two stems or 4x single stems? I.e. will it survive such a treatment? See attached photo for the situation. It's currently a single plant connected to the same root system as far as I can tell. Maybe I can simply slice it into four plants with a clean sharp knife. Also, maybe I should wait warmer temperatures before doing this... just took it inside again as it will be -1 deg C outside tonight. Tangen…

Hydriastele beguinii as a houseplant?

Hello, I’ve been growing these seedlings for 6 months now. Am not sure if they make good houseplants and am curious if anyone has any experience with them. In September, I had them very close to plant lights and I think it burned/bronzed the foliage; I moved them shortly afterwards. Do they prefer lower light? Are they best treated as shade loving understory-type palms as juveniles? I read that high nitrogen fertilizer should be avoided with them. Perhaps that caused the burning? I fertilize weakly, every other watering as I do with the nearby indoor palms: J. Magnificas, verschaffeltia splendida. They are in well draining soil and am careful not to overwater…

Leaf rotting (bacterial, fungal or other?)
by Inspire91- 1 follower

Hello everyone! To be upfront I am very new to keeping palms and so it’s safe to assume I know zero about issues like these 😅 Whatever this is, it happens really quickly. The dark rotting color takes over the leaf in a matter of days. In some cases where I catch it early enough I chop that part off and that may or may not save it. It sometimes just keeps going down the leaf till it’s taken the whole thing. My guesses are it’s either edema from overwatering, fungal or bacterial. Here is some info on their location and care: 1. I douse them with daconil once a month. The whole plant, leaves and stalk. 2. I don’t think that I over water, I’m very mindful to…

Container Foxtail Palm Growth Speed?

I’ve had this foxtail since last summer and has since rooted very well in the container and is now beginning to grow rapidly! Just opened a new frond and already has a new spear and great stem extension! How tall can these get in containers and how fast will it get to say 4 feet of trunk or so? When should I repot this? This summer or next?

Seedlings turning super light green (almost gray)?
by OriolesRock100- 1 follower

I have seedlings of various palm species (sabal palmetto, washingtonias (prob all hybrids but supposedly were some of each), and a phoenix canriensis) all of which I germinated inside and grew to about their current size. I then moved them outside a week or two ago since it has been getting quite warm outside, highs in the 70s and lows in the 50-60s, although it did rain a couple days in a row. Then (most of) my seedlings starting lightening to this grayish, dull light green color, and the strap leaves are curling up a bit (I know this is a sign of stress from the plant but can’t determine specific cause). The only one that doesn’t seem to be doing this is the canariensis…
