Potted Bismarck palm suddenly looks sick: Too much water? Too dry? Too much fertilizer?
by Palmy Portlander- 4 replies

Last summer I bought a small Bismarckia Nobilis. I put it into a pot and kept it outside until the winter weather began dropping below freezing. Outside in Portland it got a fair amount of rain in the fall and early winter. I brought it into shelter and with some heat and grow lights and I watered it sparingly. About a week ago I gave it some dry palm fertilizer - about two tablespoons on top. I was away for several days and decided to give a solid soaking- there is now saucer at the bottom so the water can drain out. I checked the moisture meter today and the soil is pretty dry at about three inches. Now the weather is milder, but rainy, I am put…

Seeking advice regarding potted Bismarckia, Butia, Jubaea and Nikau palms.

I have recently acquired or germinated four reputedly slower growing palms, which I will initially keep in pots. I intend to plant the Jubaea Chilensis and Butia Capitata in my yard in Portland once they are old and big enough. With the increasing incidences of polar vortexes, I won't be able to plant the Bismarckia Nobilis and Rhapostylis sapida outside, but intend to give them away to someone on the southern Oregon coast when they get too big (if I am still alive at that point.) My first questions are about the growth rate of the Bismarckia, Butia and Jubaea: How fast do they actually grow? How often should I repot them and how long will it be possible to k…

Hello everyone, I recently saw a clip on YouTube in which someone took stem cuttings of Chamaedorea seifrizii. The stem was cut into small pieces, which included at least two nodes. There were no fronds left on the stem. Then the stem piece was placed completely in soil and supposedly after 15 days roots and a shoot could be seen. As I had to remove a stem from my Seifrizii yesterday due to the enormous growth in height (the ceiling was in the way), I thought I'd give it a try and cut the stem into pieces and put them in soil. Has anyone here ever had experience with stem cuttings of this species? Apart from the YouTube video, there is surprisingly little i…

Queen Palm in 35 F

Hello everyone and thank you in advance! I have an enormous potted queen palm and I've heard that they can withstand 25 F in a container. I broght it inside when it was a low of 30 F at night for good last year around Thanksgiving. I would like to put it back outside for good when low temps are consistently 35F again. My question is, how long should I look for temps to be consistently 35F? At least two weeks? Three? I have never put a plant outside in lows before 55 F. Thank you!

Cleaning up in the greenhouse blooming rats

After the rats demolished some reinhardtia gracilis seedlings the usual casualties in mortality has happened. So time to clean up the old pots with the soil in them, for various reasons to prevent places for disease, weeds and bugs to live. If you leave them there you always water them for some reason automatically seeing a container and think I should water it. And just to keep things tidy and clean.

Hello, I have a young Sabal palmetto that I grow indoors. I was wondering how many years it will take my palmetto palm to develop a trunk? How long will it take for my palmetto palm to form mature fronds with palmate to costa palmate fronds? Thanks!

My chamaedorea radicalis is growing quite fast. I get 1 leaf like every 3 weeks to a month. Maybe that is normal but it seems fast. How fast do they normally grow? I would love to hear about other people's experiences with growing chamaedorea radicalis. Also if you have pictures of your own radicalis please post them do I could see them. Thanks

Cold weather container ranch maintenance in CA etc
by DoomsDave- 5 replies

Winter weather here can be tricky to deal with when you've got palms in pots. 1. On one hand, it can get cool and damp for days or weeks on end, and some palms like Hyophorbes, Royals and many Chrysalidocarpus (Dypsis) tend to stop growing and rot. 2. On the other, it can get really really searingly dry with Santa Ana winds or similar dry winds. If you're not careful, your potted plants can dry out on you unexpectedly. One thing I've found helpful is to put things like in No. 1 under sheltering eves, porches or palm fronds in the garden that will keep them a bit warmer. Even if it doesn't freeze, it can really help some plants a lot. Many palms that ge…

Yesterday I picked up my potted Cyrtostachys Renda Hybrid from a friend who has been caring for it since April of 2024. This Palm had previously been in-ground, and was potted in April, to be cared for during an extended trip. The pot is from Home Depot and has a water reservoir at the base to keep the foot of the palm wet. It was potted with Miracle-Grow cactus, palm & citrus potting mix. The palm was kept on a screened lanai in Southwest Florida, and has not been fertilized since April. The palm looked great at time of potting. I was shocked to see it yesterday. Looks sickly. Any thoughts or advice will be appreciated. Palm will now be o…

Close to a dozen little sanctamaemaria. Slow growing originally from rps. Such a beautiful little palm, cool tolerant having survived around four winters. Time will tell if they are to be successful in the ground.

A nice little bentnickia condapana and arenga hookeriana
by happypalms- 0 replies

A couple of nice palms in containers to add to the collection in the ground in few years time. Purchased originally as one leaf seedlings. I find if I buy seedlings mail order they are a lot slower than if I have germinated them myself. Due to transport shock you can see a clear difference in home germinated seeds. But sometimes it’s only available option in obtaining rare palms through mail order seedlings or plants.

Coconut Bonsai
by TJ_Palmetto- 1 reply

I think the idea of miniaturizing a coconut palm through bonsai is such a cool concept. For most of us living in temperate parts of the world, the idea of maintaining a coconut palm long-term seems almost impossible, but being able to keep the plant small through careful pruning and shallow pots makes them seem a lot more enticing even as house plants! I'd love to know what some of the people here think or if anyone here has attempted to bonsai a coconut or keeps cocos nucifera potted successfully. Here's a cool video I found on YouTube showing the technique https://youtu.be/peJR15bOAz4?si=MdIth38C1USufkoL

Kentia Palms in Pots - Odd Spots?
by Kytte- 1 follower

Hi all! I am a gardener that looks after indoor plants at a few sites in the city I live in (Brisbane, Australia). At one of my sites once a fortnight - I look after and water some Kentia palms. They are located indoors and it is AC on some of the time, AC off after business hours. Well lit. But obviously does get hot when the AC is off. (In summer at the moment and have had some hot days!) They have been chosen for the location and are appropriate for the climate and location. On the fortnights that I do see them, they get quite a few overhead waters to keep the fronds and new spears humid, and I brush off any emergent scale, water them with natra…

Indoor Roebelenii Problems
by OriolesRock100- 1 follower

Hey, I am having some issues with my phoneix roebeleniis that are indoors in pots for the winter, and I can't seem to figure out what exactly the problem is... I'm aware that they enjoy high heat and humidity ideally, but I have seen many accounts that they are usually good potted palms that tolerate overwintering indoors no problem. I have a large triple-planted roebelenii that I bought from home depot for $20 which is struggling - the middle of the three trunks has spear pulled (I applied copper fungicide twice), and all the fronds have turned pale and "crispy" (don't know how else to describe). They're still green, but they have closed up and feel very stiff compared t…

Growing Sabal minor from seed in Central VA

I've successfully germinated some Sabal minor palms from seed I collected in October 2024. Unfortunately I lost one after repotting but the rest seem to be doing well. I have them in small 16oz coffee cups. I'm nervous about over watering and I don't want to repot until these guys are really root bound. Any tips on watering seedlings? Hope they put on a lot of growth when I move them outside in the spring. Also, when could I expect more mature palmate leaves from these guys?
