Growing in pure minerals/Pumice
by Palmfarmer- 31 replies
- 1.6k views
I got the idea from a youtube channel where they grew a Trachy in Pure Pumice with great sucess. They then made the drain hole at the side of the container kinda high so it could be filt up with water and the lower roots would benifit the same way as when hitting groundwater. I am just wondering what do I need to add to the Pumice to make this doable. I guess I need some material that can hold some nutrients. Also what kind of fertilizer would be used in this scenerio? solid organics will obviously not work so I will go syntetic. Will micronutrient deficiencies become a problem if I just feed it with a something like Nitrofoska?

Got my greenhouse cooking!
by Jadd Correia- 4 replies

This greenhouse design has been living in my head for some time and I was finally able to get it built. I am still working on the floors, but for now the palms and plants are happy. Phoenicophornium borsignianum double is doing well with lots of orange. C. Renda is pushing out a new spear at a good pace. Coconuts all have new growth and lots of seedlings coming up as well (B. Edulis + W. Bifurcata + lots of Sabal Maritima + L. Saribus + B. Nobilis to name a few).

Planting multiple seeds in one pot

One often sees Bamboo Palms ,Chinese Fan Palms etc planted in multiples of 5,10,20 and even more, and accepting that a little more watering and fertilizing for the first two years, they look attractive with all the extra foliage, but once they get to three years and more ,do you have to split them and risk losing some or do they happily contine growing albeit in a stunted fashion ?

I'm curious to know how much taller it can grow in this pot before the roots run out of room. I do not see roots coming out of the bottom of the peat pot where I punctured holes. Thank you for your help.

To drain or not to drain
by BeyondTheGarden- 2 replies
I've had this P roebelinii for 4 years and repotted a handful of times. It currently has no drainage, as I know they are riparian palms that are virtually impossible to overwater. The lower fronds die off every time a new flush of spears open. But they also often exhibit this condition where half of the lowest frond(s) brown out. Never on the upper fronds. I originally thought it was sunburn, but may it be from having no drainage? Other than that it is very healthy and grows very well. Especially in the east coast heat and humidity.

I recently over fertilized my cyrtostachys renda. I removed the soil from the roots and repotted with unfertilized soil and watering it really good. I guess that was the right thing to do, not 100% sure, still a noob when it comes to palm trees. My question is, how long should I wait to fertilize again (a much smaller dose this time of course) so I don’t have any deficiencies. thanks! Picture of the Cyrtostachys Renda

washingtonia robusta Creating Washy Care Instructions

Back around August I gave 3 family members potted Washingtonia Robusta. These family members are complete novices to growing palm trees, so I wrote up an MS Word document of Care Instructions. I tried to write everything in a clear and easy to understand way. I just thought I'd share my Instructions page with the PT community. These people have absolutely no previous experience with growing palm trees. So, I had to explain things and have them grasp what the palm would or could require of them. I realize that Washingtonia Robusta are probably not the best palm to give to somebody as a gift/experiment, but I had the spare seeds so I went for it. I had been successful in gr…

Hello there, as my username would suggest I am quite interested in growing Kentia Palms. when I look around online, there is one seller available, but the plants are large in size and the shipping and freight are quite expensive. I was wondering if anyone here online would happen to have access to reputable grower or private collection that are willing to sell small sizes of these palms, thanks for your time Wayne

Hey everyone. Most of you know I’m up north. Southern Ontario. Love the hobby and am an avid coco- nut! I have been doing all kinds of germinating experiments. And just growing experiments. Up to date my palm room has been very dry due to. Obviously furnace is on. Second basement is cool so i have heat running 24/7. (Oil radiator ) room always kept in mid to upper 70s. So my very first coconut. Which was a store bought germinated is now over a year old. It has had its ups and downs. It was easy the first 6 months when it was small to keep it humid and warm. During the summer it did well here. Daytime temps of 31c and humid and we get 15 hours of daylight in summer m…

Nutrient Deficiency

These are my Phoenix Roebellenii’s. This is my first year as a palm enthusiast. These two were the first palm trees I bought. I planted them in MiracoGro cactus palm and citrus potting soil mixed with extra sand for better drainage. After 3 months I started using liquid palm tree fertilizer (3.6-3-5.1) I recently swapped to Lesco 8-2-12 +4 slow release fertilizer and fertilized them a week ago. It seems they are showing a K deficiency now. Should I add SulPoMag or do I need to give it time for the slow release fertilizer to work to correct the deficiency.

Palms for Porch in Florida Keys
by JimInTheKeys- 1 follower

Hello All, We're transplants from the Northeast and have been in Marathon in the Keys for a couple of years (the very bottom of Zone 11a). I'm gradually learning to care for tropicals and am starting to choose plants for the landscape of our new home. Our porch faces NW toward the Gulf of Mexico. When we moved in I planted some Elephant Ears in pots, but the regular squalls off the Gulf with winds in the 20's and 30's tore them up. They've gone from 5 feet tall down to 3 feet to stay below the railings out of the wind. I'm moving them to a more protected spot in the landscape and want to replace them with hardier palms that will survive in pots, be slow…

When is the right time to pick these fruits off the flower, crack them open and them plant the seeds in a pot? Do I have to wait for the fruit to change to a different color, do I need to wait for them to fall off the flower? Should I dry the seeds for a while or can I plant them right away?

Help! What’s happening to my kentia palm? I just noticed it started developing these yellow tears/spots in its leaves when they were not there before. She looks healthy otherwise. Also, the baby new frond has really bad brown tips before it’s even fully opened. How do I improve this?

I haven't kept plants for several years, but some recent household changes have enabled keeping them again. I had a good size space to fill, so I decided to get a palm, and chose a Kentia from a pretty reputable specialty store here. I am hoping this goes well, but I can share some photos if you wanna rate my setup for adequacy. I'm in Chicago and this is a south facing window with some large trees across the street that block a good bit of light. I think I should be getting plenty of light for this plant. In giving the plant a once over, the only real concern I have is that 1 of the 3 plants is a bit darker green than the other 2, and its producing 2 fronds that look a b…

Last September, we planted our palm into a pot, after transportation from our old home. We've ensured good drainage and the PH levels are correct. The soil is moist but not claggy however the fronds are just not pushing out, and the tips are yellowing. Any suggestions as to what might be wrong with Wilson? (Named after the football in the film Castaway).

Sabal Brazoriensis

Time to pot up this gem of a Brazoriensis. Roots pushed out most of the soil in the pot and split it. You know it’s overdue when you have to cut the pot off lol Theres that underground “onion” that’s what you need to be careful not to damage when digging up sabals. Put it in a 7 gallon pot and it looks like it’s ready to go in a 15 gallon already!
