Licuala Grandis baby topped with live moss
by AndraGreenThumb- 5 replies

I just bought my first Licuala Grandis baby and I am nervous not to kill it, would appreciate any help. I have a bad track record with palms so far, this one is my dream plant for years but its very rare here, i've been hunting for one for 2 years now. It came in a very dense heavy clay substrate and it has 2 plants, also another 2 that were rotted, just roots remaining but the roots were still alive, I put them away in a moss container maybe they'll regrow. I just transferred the 2 healrhy plants in a mix of leca (6-12mm), vermiculite (2-6mm), zeolite (4-6mm), charcoal (4-6mm) and bark, hydrated it well in filtered water with silica force stress reducer a…

Help! My potted fan palm isn't doing well.

Hi all, I rescued this palm from a local thrift store about 6 weeks ago. It's my first palm. I repotted it. Each time it puts out a new frond it almost immediately turns brown and crispy. I water about once a week, whenever the soil/perlite mixture feels dry when I stick my finger in it. It's on my balcony, gets bright indirect light all day and direct sun from 4pm-6:30pm every day. We're in the UAE so it's hot, around 40 degrees Celsius every day. What can I do to help this palm thrive? Thanks for the help!

When to split up c. elegans clusters?

When should I split these guys up? I've seen this question asked before with replies like "survival of the fittest" and things like that, and I've def pulled a few dead little strugglers out - but the survivors in here are all growing like weeds and I can't help but think they'd do even better if they had more room to spread out. Would these also benefit from the @Pal Meir soil mix of bark and clay like my baby Wedds are in?

Chamaedorea cataractarum. Indoors, west facing window, direct sun for most of the afternoon (upper midwest US, so not overly intense, no leaf burning). In a well-draining mix of FF Ocean Forest, coir, and pumice. Gets dechlorinated tap water once a week or as needed. leaning towards fungal, wanted to check here before pursuing treatment options (banrot) The afflicted areas are hard to the touch, and do not foam when in contact with 3% hydrogen peroxide.

A kid in love with palm trees.

Hello, My name is Levi and I live in Indiana/USA. I have an obsession with palm trees and tropical climates. But I have always dreamed of growing a palm tree in a glass enclosed area and trying to simulate that it’s in a tropical climate. Some pictures will be provided on how would love for it to look with the necessary tools to create a climate controlled biome. I’m really just trying to figure out how exactly I would be able to do this.

How can I increase transpiration?
by Talula- 1 reply
I recently got 3 trachycarpus fortunei that are potted in 24" pots. I am conducting a scientific experiment to try and assess how much water they transpire but thus far it has been significantly less than I hypothesized. I am wondering if it is because they are in pots, or because of the type of soil they are in which is the same soil they came from the nursery in. I am wondering if I should repot them with a certain soil or ratio? or if I should fertilize them, if so with what kind? I am watering them once a week and they seem to be pretty healthy so I don't think disease is the issue, but maybe they are root bound? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How? How do you distinguish?
by Tim B- 2 replies

Hey, I'm sorry for being that new guy but how do you tell? I figured out I do have a heavy hand when watering but how does everything turn yellow and looking burnt at same time? 2 Phoenix Robe's and a Areca turn. Overcast here for maybe 4 days I took my big one outside and that's where he's staying. 2 months now feeding crazy growth and everything I read has the same, basically same conclusion. I almost had an outburst and almost tossed them over, wasn't good. If anyone might could point me right I'd appreciate it. I mean all good and then I don't know. I do have 1 other question...What is a good preventive insecticide that you can buy in California? I found…

This one would have to one of my prized palms in the collection with only one, I still hesitate to plant it although iam pretty confident it will survive the cold. It’s just to rare for me at the moment, if it provides a few seeds I will plant it in the garden, although that’s what I should really do, is plant it in the ground to give it a better chance to set seeds. But one prize palm in the collection!

Nice old rhapis subtilis

An old container palm this on, it’s even still in the original soil mix of 23 years past. A rosebud farm original purchase way back. Tucked away in the corner of the greenhouse hardly ever getting a look. Poor old thing I might have to repot her and give her some TLC, she’s rewarded me for this many years time to give a little love back from the palm gods.

Palms in pots

I just bought two Florida Thatch palms on clearance at Lowe’s and they seem relatively healthy. I am leaving to go up north for the summer and was just going to leave them in their original pots until I come back and then put them in the ground so as they are not trying to establish themselves in the middle of the heat of the summer. Will they be OK in the original pot for five months?

Keeping a wahingtonia filibusta pot bound to reduce trunk width?
by GeorgiaEnjoyer- 2 replies

I bought my brother a filibusta a month ago and suggested we plant it soon as it looks like the roots are becoming crowded. He wants to keep it in its container to keep the trunk width down, because he wants the tree to look more like a true robusta. Would keeping it pot bound work well to shrink trunk width?, and are there any problems that may pop up down the line if he chooses to go that way?

Hedyscepe Canterburyana as a Houseplant!
by ZPalms- 1 follower

Back in September, I was looking for a palm that would work best as a houseplant, and on September 25, 2023, @Darold Petty messaged me asking if I would like to experiment with a Hedyscepe as a houseplant. And of course, I said yes because that would make such a unique and fun experiment, and I'm really grateful to have a chance to try one of these. Not too long after, it arrived, and I was able to pop it into a clear plastic cup so I could see the roots develop, which Darold already had sprouted when he sent it to me with a tiny sprout on it. I didn't change anything for this palm, and I didn't give it any special lighting other than what it gets from the window. Th…

Hi, I have a Kentia Palm plant in a well draining pot, which is placed inside a decorative pot. I'm not entirely sure why, but it has been leaning for a really long time now and has some drooping leaves. I have done some Google research on the matter, and some people say it's just trying to reach the light...but then does this ever resolve itself and straighten back up to how it was when I first bought it? Can you guys tell me other reasons for why it could be leaning for this long period of time? It doesn't seem like an unhealthy plant, although there are some brown tips on many leaves, and some leaves are yellowing. There was one point around December 2024 whe…

Direct sunlight
by Rio1593- 3 replies

Is direct sunlight really that damaging to the leaves? It's around 20 degrees celsius where I am in UK, and my Kentia is near a south facing window. The reason I moved it closer to the window is because the spot it was in before today was too far from the window. I'm now just hoping the leaves don't scorch, and I'd imagine they'd only scorch if it was hotter weather (25 degrees celsius and above). Thoughts?

A total noob with three pygmy dates
by Voytek- 4 followers

Hello everyone. My name is Voytek and I am a palm noob. I recently moved to South Florida and decided to get some tropical-looking potted greenery for my patio. The patio has reflected sunlight for most of the day; maybe max 3 hours of direct light in summer. Today I got three pygmy dates from a sale at Home Depot. They look beautiful and healthy! I used Google/AI to get some answers to my questions, but inside knowledge is still the best, so I humbly ask this: 1. Based on their (considerable) size, how long can I keep them in these 7 gallon nursery pots while I am looking for more permanent ones? I see one root already coming out of the drainage hole. 2. What a…

Seeking assistance and advice for ailing potted Pritchardia Lowreyana ( "LouLu" ) palms

Hi and good evening everyone, I need help from the PalmTalk experts out there! I grew these Hawaiian Pritchardia Lowreyana ( "LouLu" ) palms from seeds - first year they were doing fine, even during their first winter, only this second winter season indoors they recently started to turn brown and die. I had five plants originally, now I am down to two, and it looks like if I don't reverse this trend, will end up with zero soon... This one bit the dust last week... They were all healthy looking last December, only in the past few weeks have the leaves started turning brown and shrivel up. …

I have recently bought a Dypsis Lutescens to grow indoors, but it only seems to have 2 fronds on each leaf. Is something wrong with the plant or am I getting the name wrong? Does anyone know how to fix this? (I know it's near the heat but it's never turned on)

Does anyone know if this is an obvious and undoubtedly overwatered Phoenix Canariensis frond ?
by Bojan- 2 replies

I've already posted detailed info about this issue, just want to know if any of experienced growers can diagnose by sight, alla minute, is this a classic over watering signature for Phoenix Canariensis, or it might be the signature of a bigger problem. I can't sleep for days. It showed up the next morning after watering, i have it for 6 years, never had a problem with it. This season Its still pretty cold, central Europe, nights go down to 10°Celsius, max daily is 18 °C and there is no heating. It is the lowest and oldest frond, but it happened so fast that i feel like i have to react ASAP. It happened immediately after watering, but the yellowing from inside out is confu…

Will My Windmill Survive?
by Wordofadvicce- 1 follower

I’ve had this windmill potted for 3 years and store it in a collapsible greenhouse over the winter. There’s usually no issues from season to season. This year, it LOOKED like it was doing well all winter until I uncovered them this spring. The palms looked dried/fried, yellowing, and folding inwards. There is new growth, but not much movement in the last month. No spear pull. Any suggestions as to what is happening ?
