Kentia Palm - one frond browning
by JG207- 1 reply

Hi my name is Jon and I’m hoping for some help or advice with my potted Kentia Palm in Maine. I received this about two months ago. About 2-3 weeks ago I noticed some yellowing to browning on a single frond following repotting but there may have been the earlier stages prior to repotting and I was blinded by enthusiasm. It began progressing more dramatically at which point I took these pictures. I noticed the darker spotting but didn’t see any signs of pests and it’s only affecting this single part. Since then it has progressed still only affecting this area. Today it looks fully dead and is migrating down the branch. The specifics- I h…

Preferably something that is available in 40 to 50 lb bags

I need some tips

I don’t have much experience with growing palms let alone in Zone 7a. With that being said, I would greatly appreciate some advice. My main problem I seem to be encountering is that the leaves yellow and brown. I have tried moving them in a spot with a little more shade, changing the frequency of times I water them, and some of those spikes. There has to be something I’m not doing right. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. Pygmy Date Same Pygmy Date Sago Majesty

Potted palms live less. Ok but why?

Hi all, I often read on Palmtalk that palms in pots are not happy long term (bounded roots, lack of fertiliser, too dry and too dark indoors, species preferences…) but I wonder is it really so bad? I mean they don’t just die without any visible reason. Why does my warm loving bizzie seedling grow at all if it’s so “doomed”? What stops it from just dying immediately, huh? Pal meir showed his 40 years old palms, ain’t it possible for any sp. with proper care? Sorry for bad writing, hard question to express even in my native language p.s. want to show you this fat funny Phoenix from Moscow botanical garden (I signed as a volunteer there to get some experie…

Hi all, just rescued this magnificent beauty from b&q, first time palm owner so any pro tips gratefully received I've got her secured and propped up, shes in a bath at the moment with some feed, and then I'll probably prune the most obvious parts off. Secure her, find her a decent spot and leave her for a few days to see how she gets on, bottom watering for now as previous rescues have come with gnats ready to burst through the soil and infected other plants in the house I've got some gravel, and some gnat stop for use when i do top water but any advice at this stage about watering/ lighting or secret sauce to help her thrive would be amazing as shes an ab…

I purchased a Meditteranean Fan Palm and put it in a 20 inch pot about 11 weeks ago. I live in Arizona (Zone 8b). The Palm seems to be doing well and is getting new growth. I am planning to start fertilizing with Oscomote Plus, and from what I read this is probably a good time to start. Can anyone give any recommendations on how much to use and how often to apply it?

Saving a CIDP

I was given a CIDP about a month ago. It's about 3' tall, a couple dead/dying fronds. It was very root bound. They didn't want it when it was given to them and they never once watered it or cared for it at all. When I got it the soil was so dry that it shook around in the pot like a stone. I've since reported it into what I now think might be too big of a pot? Hoping I can save it and get a nice big plant for years to come. I do have some purple heart that broke and I placed a long the edges as qell

I received a young licuala with multiple fronds and trunks about two weeks ago from a nursery that grew them outside in Florida. Seemingly in the past few weeks or so, it looks like all the fronds on one trunk dried up entirely. I'm not a palm expert but it *appears* to there are multiple trunks in one root ball. It came unpotted and I put it in an orchid mix + sandy soil: basically 90% bark + soil in a plastic nursery pot within a cache pot. It sits about 10 feet back from a south facing window, obscured by furniture to avoid direct light, with around 40% household humidity. If you look at the images you can see some of the smaller fronds looking gray/dehydrated an…

Species ID help: Livistona chinensis right?
by PalmsInBaltimore- 1 follower

Hello all, I bought this palm from a nursery last weekend: It was labeled simply as a “Fan Palm” at the nursery. I’m 80% certain it’s a Chinese fan palm (Livistona chinensis), but it’s also a young plant so I was wondering if it’s possibly something else? Photo of plant above and photo of the stems below (this is my first post so I hope the pics upload correctly): also, if it is Livistona chinensis are there any species-specific tips I should know for repotting this one. It will live in this part shade corner of the backyard until our nighttime temps get into the low 40s here in Charles village, Baltimore. Right on the cusp of 7b/8a. Would like to mo…

I thought it might be interesting to gather some information about what the pros use: Tobias Spanner, the owner of Palme Per Paket, published the book "Das Palmen-Kulturhandbuch" 1999. He recommends these soil mixes: 30% {60%} Peat based soil mix or limed peat (pH 6) or coconut substrate (e g "Kokohum") 20% {10%} fine lime-free clay soil or loam 25% {15%} quartz sand 0-4mm 25% {15%} other mineral for drainage: pumice, perlite, vermiculite, LECA, Lavalit (crushed lava stone), Seramis (porous clay granulate from Germany), stone wool (such as rockwool) Up to 15% {20%} of pine barch humus or loose compost may be mixed in The figures with…

Fox Tail Palm brown spots
by The Palm Kit- 2 replies

Hey everyone! So, I bought my Fox Tail Palm in Orlando, Florida back in May, and I absolutely love it. I don’t remember if it had brown spots or a bit of yellowing when I got it, but it does seem to have a few spots. It’s in a pot, and we’ve been watering pretty much daily because it’s been really hot and dry here in Southwest Virginia. Do y’all have any suggestions as to whether it’s too much watering, or what it might be? The soil seems to drain well. Thanks!

Areca palm shoots/runners
by Brooklyn Palms- 4 replies

I am not at all an expert. But I've had what I think is an Areca Palm for around 13 years. Within the last year or two, it's started sending out shoots or runners from dirt at the edges of it's pot. They continue to grow slowly and new ones appear over time. See photos. What are these shoots/runners? If they are related to reproduction, is there a way to propagate them? Is this in fact an Areca Palm? Any insights would be much appreciated. Thank you! IMG_7656.HEIC IMG_7657.HEIC IMG_7658.HEIC

I am relatively new to growing palms from seed, but was shocked to discover what appears to be a sucker growing from an approximately 1 year old Sabal palmetto sapling. I can’t imagine this is typical, but wanted to ask the experts. Has anyone seen this before? Or is this something else?

Hello! I’ve had this palm for about 2 months and it seems like it’s dying from the bottom up, one leaf at a time. I’ve cut 2 leaves from the bottom so far. It’s in a bright room, out of direct light. I water when it’s dry (when i stick my finger in dirt and top few inches are dry). We have bunnies and i put some of their poops in the dirt as fertilizer. Any help would be appreciated!!

Recently my 7' tall Ponytail in a pot threw out a 3' long shoot at the top. I was completely surprised (I had been out of town for a week and it appeared while I was away). Should I leave it to wither in time or remove it? Any illumination/explanation about this would be appreciated. Thanks very much!

Chamaedorea questions

Neighbor gave me a young C elegans that wasn't doing well for her. I know nothing about this species. I suspect the soil is too heavy (doesn't drain well) and that it got too much fertilizer. My questions: Pretty sure I need to repot. Wait for it to dry out some or do it while still wet? Best soil mix? How long to wait to fertilize, and best npk? Any other advice welcome, all my palms are outdoor palms well suited for Sonoran Desert weather and most of them I have grown from seed, but parlor palms are new to me.
