Some winners in the collection
by happypalms- 0 replies

Just a few winners that will live there days out in containers. Some have been in the collection for 23 years. It’s a challenge having a palm collection in containers. If ever I sell my property I can take my collection to the retirement village and just pass the days watering and maintaining the collection.

Found a picture of the site the new greenhouse got built on. What a transformation a little bit of work can do. Even the chambeyronia have doubled in size in the last 4 year’s . It’s been fun creating a grow space for exotic plants. The old saying if it looks good it grows good

Palm trunk hole

I was transporting my majesty palm to another location when my finger sunk into a soft spot on the trunk, I scraped away all the loose stuff and left it to dry out, the hole was around the size and depth of a thumb. I’m not sure exactly what caused it, but my guess was because of the constant pooling of water due to having no air circulation and sunlight to evaporate the water left after watering it, as it was in the corner of my porch. Should I leave it the way it is or fill it in? Thanks!!

Hi everyone, Long time reader, first time poster here. I have some unhappy young queen palms, and I really hope someone can help me to save them. Twelve months ago, I planted four young queen palms in pots. They were a nice, rich green colour to start with, but they have steadily yellowed and now they all look quite sad. Although they have grown quite a bit, some of their branches are more yellow than green, and even the healthiest-looking ones are an uneven, mottled yellow-green colour. They also have brown spots and dead tips, which I have been trimming off. I have uploaded some pics. The pots are very exposed to sun in summer (December to March…

Growing tall Areca Palms in pots?
by FloridaKeysGrower- 6 replies
- 2.9k views
I want tall arecas with thick bamboo looking stalks. Am I on the right track here? I inherited these older Areca palms (7 years?) but they were neglected and extremely root bound. I started fertilizing them and got some green shoots. I repotted them, and cut 1/3 of it’s roots off and repotted in slightly larger container. I’ve started removing the smaller shoots. The idea is to help the palm focus on its larger shoots so that it can grow taller. I’m trying to form a canopy with these. Any other tips to grow tall areca palms in pots? I can’t seem to find any nice examples online. Definitely willing to increase pot size when the time comes, but is it a losing battle?

Hello, I have brown threads under the leaves of my Howea, grown indoors. The brown threads do not appear to be insects as there is no movement, nor any defined shape. Are these brown threads normal? The plant looks healthy otherwise. Thanks for your inputs. Best, Luka

We have had this flamethrower palm potted for about six months. It sits inside our lanai with filtered sunlight. It gets watered maybe three times a week. Not sure why the leaves are turning brown. Even the new growth is starting to turn brown may be too much water? Or sick?

Sabal Lisa seedlings that split into two....

I have about 6 Sabal Lisa seedlings that have split into two plants. I'm sure one will eventually die but was wondering if this is a normal thing for Sabal Lisa seedlings? They are also on track with the growth rate of being actual lisas. Got about 12 out of 50 seedlings with the Lisa growth rate right now. Thanks for any input.

Are these seeds still good for anything?
by qwertz- 6 replies

At the end of October last year, I bought and sowed 3 Christmas palm seeds and one bottle palm seed. So far nothing has sprouted. Today I took the seeds out of the pots and took a closer look at them. The first three photos are photos of bottle palm seed. Is it my imagination or did something try to grow near the top end but it withered and became woody? In the third photo you can see that a hole at the bottom of the seed is partially unsealed and a gap has formed. In the fourth photo is a Christmas palm seed. At the top I noticed a characteristic formation. The Christmas palm seed in the fifth photo looks at the top different than the seed in the fourt…

Areca potting soil mistake, Root Shock! Can I Re- Re- Pot this poor plant, in order to change the soil?

Ok, so I messed up. Transplanted my Areca today, in the correct size pot, big drainage holes, but put it in straight dry potting soil, Miracle Grow that had sat and dried for a year. Now, Fernando - my palms name- is in Root Shock?!? Browning tips, getting droopier..it was quite root bound when I transferred it to new pot, I did barely anything to the roots, pulled off a couple dead root tips... thinking the less I mess with it the less can be messed up. I retained the original growth medium, it was WET, put Fernando in dry potting soil, and only slightly watered, because the roots and the medium they came with were so damp already. Things are not good. Tips of leaves B…

I've heard good things about Captain Jacks, but I've also heard people just hose them off with the garden hose and have good success with that. Would be interested to hear your routine!

Outdoor Care tips for an archontophoenix
by amalou24- 2 replies

Hey I recently bought a beautiful palm tree from a nursery (labeled as Archontophoenix, though I’m unsure of the exact species), but I'm not very experienced with palm tree care. I live in Morocco, where the climate is quite dry, with humidity around 40-50%. However, the temperatures seem favorable for this type of plant: it never drops below 10°C/50°F, and in summer, it typically reaches around 30°C/86°F. I planted it in a pot that might be slightly oversized, but I wanted to give it room to grow. The soil is a mix of sand, potting mix, and compost (I plan to fertilize it regularly). IIt’s positioned in a spot that gets full sun almost all day. I also heard that i…

Should I cut off inner brown fronds?
by Mo1234- 6 replies
Hi everyone I have this palm for about 5 months now, when I got it it had 2 inner fronds (one from each side) opening up already brown. Now it looks like it's growing ok and adjusted to the environment, new fronds look green and healthier although it's quite windy here. My question is- should I cut off these inner brown fronds or should I wait until it's "their turn" to peel off as outer ones?

Advice on starting a Pygmy Date from seed
by Mike Palm Enthusiast- 1 follower

I decided to try to grow a few different date palms from seeds. I've been doing this on and off for years, but mostly with just seeds from dates from the supermarket. I had moderate success this summer with Canary Island Dates and Silver Dates, but really failed with Pygmy Dates. All had problems with fungus. The Pygmy Dates didn't show much fungus, but were obviously overwhelmed by it. Numerous Pygmy Dates seeds sent out a cotyledonary petiole only to die shortly afterwards. I used a different method of germination this year that obviously doesn't work for me. I used perlite in styrofoam with a cover and temperature 75-95 F. OMG, fungus! I transferred midway to…

Hello! I am a first time queen palm haver and they are not doing too well. I live in TN and keep these two queen palms indoors. When we got them, the root balls were like rocks and I had to use a saw to get them loose. They have been inside for maybe 3 months now and they are browning at the tips. I also trimmed a couple of their wings. I water once a week (not really sure how to explain how much I water them. Please help!

Growing in pure minerals/Pumice
by Palmfarmer- 31 replies
- 2.8k views
I got the idea from a youtube channel where they grew a Trachy in Pure Pumice with great sucess. They then made the drain hole at the side of the container kinda high so it could be filt up with water and the lower roots would benifit the same way as when hitting groundwater. I am just wondering what do I need to add to the Pumice to make this doable. I guess I need some material that can hold some nutrients. Also what kind of fertilizer would be used in this scenerio? solid organics will obviously not work so I will go syntetic. Will micronutrient deficiencies become a problem if I just feed it with a something like Nitrofoska?

Got my greenhouse cooking!

This greenhouse design has been living in my head for some time and I was finally able to get it built. I am still working on the floors, but for now the palms and plants are happy. Phoenicophornium borsignianum double is doing well with lots of orange. C. Renda is pushing out a new spear at a good pace. Coconuts all have new growth and lots of seedlings coming up as well (B. Edulis + W. Bifurcata + lots of Sabal Maritima + L. Saribus + B. Nobilis to name a few).

Planting multiple seeds in one pot

One often sees Bamboo Palms ,Chinese Fan Palms etc planted in multiples of 5,10,20 and even more, and accepting that a little more watering and fertilizing for the first two years, they look attractive with all the extra foliage, but once they get to three years and more ,do you have to split them and risk losing some or do they happily contine growing albeit in a stunted fashion ?

I'm curious to know how much taller it can grow in this pot before the roots run out of room. I do not see roots coming out of the bottom of the peat pot where I punctured holes. Thank you for your help.
