Hey everyone. Most of you know I’m up north. Southern Ontario. Love the hobby and am an avid coco- nut! I have been doing all kinds of germinating experiments. And just growing experiments. Up to date my palm room has been very dry due to. Obviously furnace is on. Second basement is cool so i have heat running 24/7. (Oil radiator ) room always kept in mid to upper 70s. So my very first coconut. Which was a store bought germinated is now over a year old. It has had its ups and downs. It was easy the first 6 months when it was small to keep it humid and warm. During the summer it did well here. Daytime temps of 31c and humid and we get 15 hours of daylight in summer m…

Nutrient Deficiency

These are my Phoenix Roebellenii’s. This is my first year as a palm enthusiast. These two were the first palm trees I bought. I planted them in MiracoGro cactus palm and citrus potting soil mixed with extra sand for better drainage. After 3 months I started using liquid palm tree fertilizer (3.6-3-5.1) I recently swapped to Lesco 8-2-12 +4 slow release fertilizer and fertilized them a week ago. It seems they are showing a K deficiency now. Should I add SulPoMag or do I need to give it time for the slow release fertilizer to work to correct the deficiency.

Palms for Porch in Florida Keys
by JimInTheKeys- 1 follower

Hello All, We're transplants from the Northeast and have been in Marathon in the Keys for a couple of years (the very bottom of Zone 11a). I'm gradually learning to care for tropicals and am starting to choose plants for the landscape of our new home. Our porch faces NW toward the Gulf of Mexico. When we moved in I planted some Elephant Ears in pots, but the regular squalls off the Gulf with winds in the 20's and 30's tore them up. They've gone from 5 feet tall down to 3 feet to stay below the railings out of the wind. I'm moving them to a more protected spot in the landscape and want to replace them with hardier palms that will survive in pots, be slow…

Question about Old man palm from fruit to seed to planting in pot.

When is the right time to pick these fruits off the flower, crack them open and them plant the seeds in a pot? Do I have to wait for the fruit to change to a different color, do I need to wait for them to fall off the flower? Should I dry the seeds for a while or can I plant them right away?

Help! What’s happening to my kentia palm? I just noticed it started developing these yellow tears/spots in its leaves when they were not there before. She looks healthy otherwise. Also, the baby new frond has really bad brown tips before it’s even fully opened. How do I improve this?

I haven't kept plants for several years, but some recent household changes have enabled keeping them again. I had a good size space to fill, so I decided to get a palm, and chose a Kentia from a pretty reputable specialty store here. I am hoping this goes well, but I can share some photos if you wanna rate my setup for adequacy. I'm in Chicago and this is a south facing window with some large trees across the street that block a good bit of light. I think I should be getting plenty of light for this plant. In giving the plant a once over, the only real concern I have is that 1 of the 3 plants is a bit darker green than the other 2, and its producing 2 fronds that look a b…

Last September, we planted our palm into a pot, after transportation from our old home. We've ensured good drainage and the PH levels are correct. The soil is moist but not claggy however the fronds are just not pushing out, and the tips are yellowing. Any suggestions as to what might be wrong with Wilson? (Named after the football in the film Castaway).

Sabal Brazoriensis

Time to pot up this gem of a Brazoriensis. Roots pushed out most of the soil in the pot and split it. You know it’s overdue when you have to cut the pot off lol Theres that underground “onion” that’s what you need to be careful not to damage when digging up sabals. Put it in a 7 gallon pot and it looks like it’s ready to go in a 15 gallon already!

Media question

Normally I pot up my smaller understory palms that in a mix of Miracle Gro Palm/Citrus/Cactus soil mixed with medium or small pumice. I (and more importantly the roots!) hate how the soil becomes broken down and muddy after time regardless of how much pumice is used. Thoughts on using a coco peat/perlite (plus the pumice) mix instead of the soil? Would it be worth the extra cost? I want to do whatever is healthiest for my palms roots regardless of price. This is regarding Pinanga, Licuala, Iguanura, Calyptrocalyx, Hydriastele, etc.

Germinating palm nut is stuck
by Germinater- 1 follower

I am germinating palm nuts I gathered at a cousin's wedding. I gathered a ton of them back in September and kept them in a moist bag. These three germinated, and on very different timescales. I think it was one in January and the other two in May. I am concerned about the one that is sticking straight up appears to be stuck in its shell. The seed is not lying on it's side like the other one. When I bend it over it bounces right back. It's been stagnated that way for about a month now. What should I do? I've seen YouTube videos of germinating tomato seeds with the shell being pulled off the cotyledon, but this is much larger and harder. Thank you! Glad I found this forum.

New growths on Majesty! my other super healthy Pygmy date Same Pygmy as for the Majesty it looks the same to me. This is the only frond with this kind of spots. I’ll leave it up to all of you whether or not I should prune it.

This is probably a hella stupid question so apologies in advance, but I have this large Chamaedorea elegans that is constantly flowering and producing fruit, and it seems all hopeful as the fruit turn to a peachy color, but then immediately fall off premature. This plant is constantly always flowering year round, but I was wondering if issues with pollination could cause this, Pic below is the fruit a day before they all fell off

New mule palm

Just went by Tallahassee, Florida and went by a nursery and bought a Mule palm. I was really looking for a Pindo palm but this will work as well hopefully. Does anyone know what type of slow release fertilizer is used here and in other pots? I never can find the green kind around these local stores. See last picture for the type of fertilizer I'm talking about.

Foxtail Palm issues
by bgifford- 2 replies

Hey everyone. The nice hot weather here in Kentucky has almost all of my plants grow like crazy. The only ones are my Foxtail Palm. I overwintered it in the Garage (second year) due to its size (9.5 feet inc pot). I had lost all of the leaves except the spear due to it being not bright enough and possibly to dry and spidermites. It’s been back outside since it’s been consistently in the 40s at night (late april) but there has not been any movement on the spear. No growth. I checked and no spear pull and it looks still really good and green. I put a mark on it to see if it would move but nothing. I was wondering if there are any signs of looming death i need to look out f…

Kentia Palm - one frond browning
by JG207- 1 reply

Hi my name is Jon and I’m hoping for some help or advice with my potted Kentia Palm in Maine. I received this about two months ago. About 2-3 weeks ago I noticed some yellowing to browning on a single frond following repotting but there may have been the earlier stages prior to repotting and I was blinded by enthusiasm. It began progressing more dramatically at which point I took these pictures. I noticed the darker spotting but didn’t see any signs of pests and it’s only affecting this single part. Since then it has progressed still only affecting this area. Today it looks fully dead and is migrating down the branch. The specifics- I h…

I need some tips
by Palms4Prez- 11 replies

I don’t have much experience with growing palms let alone in Zone 7a. With that being said, I would greatly appreciate some advice. My main problem I seem to be encountering is that the leaves yellow and brown. I have tried moving them in a spot with a little more shade, changing the frequency of times I water them, and some of those spikes. There has to be something I’m not doing right. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. Pygmy Date Same Pygmy Date Sago Majesty

Potted palms live less. Ok but why?

Hi all, I often read on Palmtalk that palms in pots are not happy long term (bounded roots, lack of fertiliser, too dry and too dark indoors, species preferences…) but I wonder is it really so bad? I mean they don’t just die without any visible reason. Why does my warm loving bizzie seedling grow at all if it’s so “doomed”? What stops it from just dying immediately, huh? Pal meir showed his 40 years old palms, ain’t it possible for any sp. with proper care? Sorry for bad writing, hard question to express even in my native language p.s. want to show you this fat funny Phoenix from Moscow botanical garden (I signed as a volunteer there to get some experie…
