Landscape Art.. A different view through the lens..

As mentioned awhile back, been working on a project that i thought i'd share ..and seek yay / nay feedback on. When it comes to Photography, there are many different subjects one can zero in on in regards to subject matter.. The great thing about and angle that involves landscape Photography is it is hard to manipulate things like what light, or what other conditions you may be shooting in. While the " natural state " of a photograph ..cleaned up, if necessary of course, is great, there is more to see ..beyond what you might see in a picture, if you use your imagination, and look beyond what is captured in the lens.. One can take their pictures in a more " ar…

Flashback.. Pictures from the past.
by Silas_Sancona- 0 replies

Before Photography went digital, photographers relied on film to capture ..pretty much everything.. Part of the enjoyment in using film was waiting for pictures to be developed, or, if you were lucky enough to take Photography in High School, learning how to develop pictures yourself.. Something every legit photographer should have experience doing, even if you'll likely never need to.. The downside of using film of course is having a ton of "reject" pictures hanging around alongside the great shots ...Can't just hit delete on a film camera. I recently had several boxes of stuff i'd had in storage for about 15 or so years sent here, including a fair chunk of…

Citizenship/residency

A U.S. citizen. Just got my Mexican permanent residency 6 months ago!! One of the benefits: I can drive a Mexican license plated vehicle to the US (across the border) for work/pleasure. (Cheaper plates/insurance than a US license plate vehicle). Sadly so I cannot claim my German citizenship because they require I forego my U.S. citizenship and any future passports. Seeing how the state of affairs are in Deutschland and the EU, it's not worth it. It's not the same Europe our grandparents talked about Carpe Diem

Anyone have experience climbing down and back up the old Bar-10 pack mule trail on the North Rim, in one day? Thinking about giving it a go. Some really interesting flora in the canyon, so I would like to walk. Thanks.

Sacred Ground, Part 4: Walking the edge.

Some of the lofty views from a fantastic autumn morning spent exploring the upper portion of Devil's Canyon up at Oak Flat. Was hoping to get down into this section of the canyon itself via a suggested access point but it appears, at least for the moment, the Telegraph Fire last summer erased a clear path from the top of the canyon, to the bottom. Isn't exactly the easiest route down the hill to begin with. Regardless, took my time exploring the same section of the rim of the canyon awaiting clouds slung over the mountains when i arrived at sunrise to break. Unlike hikes out here thru the summer, wasn't alone either.. Great weather atm brought out lots of other folk…

Identifying raw/rough diamonds?
by AroidRage- 4 replies

Hello, my palmy people. I was hesitant to post about this here, but I'm not getting any help from anywhere else and my good pal DoomsDave said to go for it. I spent a day collecting some material from Crater of Diamonds Park in Arkansas, and I've been sorting it out this past week. Question is, what is the trick to telling raw diamonds apart from other minerals that look so similar? I figured a lot of people who like plants may also be into geology, so do we have any gemologists, jewelers, geologists, crystal fanatics, etc in these forums, who could help me out? I've read just about every article I could find, along with YouTube videos, and it just hasn't clicked yet. It'…

Time to enjoy some lush, Monsoon painted scenes from one of the most unexpected regions of the state full of landscapes that could easily be mistaken for destinations far removed from here, yet, are familiar, depending on the time of year... Included in this year's addition are a few views from the historic Empire Ranch that sits within Las Cienegas, and some views from the Paton Center for Hummingbirds / Sonoita - Patagonia Creek Preserve in Patagonia, Two great summer retreats where rare exotic birds visit, and Jaguar have roamed... And yet, this is just a taste of vast and nearly uninterrupted horizon that stretches east from here, all the way to west Texas ( .…

The Emerald Desert, Take 2, Part 3: Island Oasis in the Sky

Some views from the trip to Madera Canyon.. As mentioned in the Plant related threads, Madera Canyon sits in one of the Sky High, desert " Islands " which bridge the divide between southern rim of the Colorado Plateau, Mountains of far eastern Arizona / Gila Mountains of south central New Mexico, and the Sierra Madre Occidental / Mexican Plateau, providing a place of refuge for plants and animals which could not survive life in the deserts below. These islands are also where one will find creatures which either reach their northern limit, or may be exploring new territory north of where they might occur in northern Mexico. Madera Canyon is a world renowned, crow…

Donations to help Veterans

Every January for the past few years I have been sending $100 to the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). Every month I get something from them asking for more and they include Xmas/Birthday cards, note pads, calendars etc. Has anyone here know of anyone that they have helped? I'm beginning to wonder if the VFW is really a Chinese fund raising organization as EVERYTHING the send me seems to be made in China. Talked to another Vet the other day. He has been doing the same with the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and he gets tons of the same CRAP every month. Do these organizations really HELP Vets? Or are they…

Stange Dream

I was approached by an attractive young lady, her fiancé and advisor regarding a real estate transaction. She explained to me that she was desirous of doing a 1031 exchange with a large citrus farm that she owned in Inyo County. I had heard the name Inyo and knew it was in California but was suspicious. suddenly, instead of being in a law office, I was in a very large library that I had never seen before. I was looking for a simple map of California to confirm the location of Inyo County and whether or not a large citrus farm could exist in that area. I searched all over the library for a simple map of California but could not locate it. I kept looking for librarians…

It's a sad day indeed. At 58 years old I've only known Queen Elizabeth as Queen of Australia, she's been the constant. We've gone through 16 Prime Ministers during her reign but she was the one that never changed. A very sad day.

Recommended Books?

Hi All, I am looking for some garden design inspiration, and was wondering what everyone's favorite books are on this subject. I manage a small botanical garden in North San Diego county (zones 10a/10b) and am always interested in learning more and developing my skills. We have a lot of unused space to fill. I love working with palms, cycads, and all sorts of tropical understory plants. I am not opposed to more general recommendations, but I am especially interested in works focusing on designing with tropical and subtropical plants. Some books that I have read and enjoyed on the subject: Designing with Palms, Jason DeWees (very inspirational and informative, h…

The very recent 'Palm trees in Minecraft' topic made me think of some of the more realistic and possibly identifiable Palm trees I've seen in PC games. There have been a few, but one group stood out for me when first encountering them in the game, Path of Exile. As a Palm nut, I did a serious double take when encountering them and I had to photograph... err... screenshot them; often in a hurry due to combat. The background design artist of the game must have used real species as a base, as they are very realistic. The game's developer, Grinding Gear Games, is based in New Zealand, so maybe that had something to do with the desire for palmy accuracy... - I…

Best high quality garden spades and such.

So I broke another cheapo shovel. I think it’s time to upgrade to some tools that may last a lifetime. I’m looking for shovels/spades for transplanting and general digging work. I know that there are many full metal options. Do any of you have some recommendations. Price is not a concern, if it’s the last ones I buy I’m good with that. Thanks.
