What do those numbers in brackets stand for? I know they indicate contents of basic nutritional elements, but why are they in brackets and differ from the bold printed numbers, and what is their significance?

Magic, Mushrooms?

** Before going any further, i do not advise anyone consuming " wild " Mushrooms w/ out first doing extensive research, and very technical proper identification** An interesting article related to a growing area of research involving the potential benefits of psycho-active Mushrooms. Once viewed with biased reservation, researchers are working to reverse the negative stigma often associated with this group of Fungi and further exploring the potential for new drugs and therapeutic applications that could be right under our noses. In the case of the Mushroom cited in the article below, potential new treatment options for pain relief, Epilepsy and Parkinson's Dise…

Why does the Desert smell like rain, when it rains? New research article may have answered that question

Great, new article released by researchers at the UofA ( University of Arizona, Tucson ) discussing in - depth research of that weird, ..and welcomed " smell " anyone in the desert instantly recognizes when it rains, especially during the summer months. Seems there may be numerous health benefits for Humans, other critters, ..and the plants themselves as well.. Pretty cool. Nice to have a front row seat to the research, and benefits. https://uapress.arizona.edu/2022/04/why-does-the-desert-smell-like-rain-new-ua-research-suggests-the-diverse-osmocosm-of-the-sonoran-desert

After much editing, a look at one of Arizona's irreplaceable environmental jewels currently facing numerous challenges from many angles.. the biggest potential threat being human- driven which threatens to erase the very existence of the landscapes here. Beyond the starting point here at the Flat ( Part 1 of this series of threads ) lies much more that also faces a very uncertain future, for many of the same reasons... Considered sacred ground to local Native Americans, Oak flat is both a place where people come to connect with something spiritual, and a popular place people come to escape the valley and spend a weekend camping. Located roughly 26 miles east o…

Selections have been made, brackets are being set ..so who will win it all this year? While not exactly the biggest of sports geek.. have payed attention to College hoops since living in the land of everything Kansas University and interacting with many players on the team at the time who frequented the bar i worked at for several years.. ( ..a certain, former player, who everyone considered a tough guy cried like a 3 year old when he got kicked out of our bar one night.. No names. ) let alone seeing the well beyond sports impact former K.U. coach Roy Williams had on the community of Lawrence itself... He's just a cool guy as is anyway.. To this day, if i see a Ka…

A Couple Of Old Off-road Warriors

The 51 year old VW Baja Bug I've had, and modified for the last 6 years... The 36 year old Suzuki Samurai, I bought about a month ago... It is bone stock except for the rims and paint... The Samurai will go any place the Baja will, but at a much slower pace... A 1.3 liter engine, and short suspension travel, won't allow for any speed off-road... Both fun cars in the desert, but at a different pace.... Butch

I've noticed a lot of us have all sorts of cool cars & trucks in the background of many of the Palmy pics we post. Maybe I catch the tail light of an old MGB in a garage or the front fender of a Bentley but I notice them and wish I could see the whole vehicle. So join in ! Share a pic of your's, your spouses, kids, whatever. Here's one of mine, a '67 Camaro RS SS Convertible. It's been under the metal knife lately while I replaced all the sheet metal in the trunk area.

Some scenes from yesterday's walkabout.. ** For any new comers curious about a full description of the various prominent peaks / mountains / other landmarks in the pictures, check out the first chapter of the " Socially Distanced threads from back in 2020 ** Will lay out some, but not all landmarks in this chapter.. Will be back out here in time for catching the Palo Verde in- season again, and ..hopefully.. sometime after the start of Monsoon season, IF this year is wet enough to warrant a check in. Had so many places to check out last summer that i skipped this area. Height of a reasonably wet summer is pretty much the only " season " i haven't yet seen …

Who’s growing hydroponics?

Was always interested in growing hydroponically, wasn’t sure I would ever get the chance to do it. It just so happens the owner of the company I work for had this setup in his garage and did one vegetable grow and shut it down ( as a lot of labors of love go lol ). His wife told him to use it or sell it, so we set it up in one of the mostly empty storage rooms at our shop. Kinda funny I work at a steel fabrication shop and get paid to play around with a hydro setup whenever I want, not that I need any more responsibilities or plant projects lol. Anyway the trough system is a lettuce growing machine. This is 5 weeks from seed

I've shown the landscapes, now it's time to take a look at some of the plants observed both in Oak Flat, and while hiking to / from the lower end of Devil's Canyon.. As mentioned, pretty good diversity of plants there, and no doubt, walking around looking for stuff twice ( so far ) is just scratching the surface.. I'm sure there are more things to be found. Regardless.. As mentioned in the video and article i'd linked, Mining development of the area will result in a 2.5 mile wide crater, approx. 1,000ft deep, or is what is estimated, based on the mining technique that has been discussed. ( " Block " mining, 7k ft below the surface ..and allowing the land to eventual…

New (35yr old) Suzuki Samurai I just bought to tow behind my motorhome.. Great little 4wheel drive vehicle for tooling around in the So Cal deserts, or making grocery runs while camping... It rides like a conestoga wagon, so my wife and I might need a couple of kidney belts though... Now to out fit it for towing... Butch

Having dreams about specific plant species
by Jimbean- 8 replies

I get this from time to time. I just woke up from a dream where I was collecting Thrinax radiata seeds, some unknown plant species, and I saw stand of Pinus clausa and I saw Ptychosperma elegans naturalizing. I will have dreams about specific plants as I either look out the window from somewhere or walking through woods.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2021/12/03/hawaii-blizzard-warning-weather/8850338002/ Wow, this seems crazy; though I suspect, on reflection it might be more common than many realize. Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea are both quite big and Hawaii is in the cool tropics.

Weeds of Sydney 1 2

I am in a volunteer bushcare group that seeks to replace weeds with natives, so I thought it would be fun to show some of our most troublesome weeds. Anredera cordifolia Madeira vine. If any plant could be called evil, this is it. Aerial bulbs can drop to the ground and germinate even after the roots and lower stems of the vine have been removed.
