How's everyone in San Diego after the earthquake?
by DoomsDave- 8 replies

I was in the middle of the morning when I got an alert on my phone which they used to use for missing senior citizens, etc., but this time it was for an earthquake. I'm thinking, "Oh really now? No [fecal material]?" and the shaking started and went on for about 30 seconds. Turned out to be an 8 mile deep temblor near Julian, up in the mountains of Sandy Ego County. Anyone else feel it? Any damage? (None for me, this time, thank heaven.) 5.2-magnitude quake shakes Southern California, tumbling rocks onto roads and items off shelves

We get a fair amount of wildlife in the garden here, including Wallabies And Kangaroos, plus many other native animals, birds and reptiles. This little Wallaby was happily munching on the Singapore Daisy this afternoon. Even though wet from the rain, his fur is much darker than that of the usual wallabies we get around here. Daryl

Each evening after work (when it's not raining) I try to get some exercise, so I go for a walk. I walk along the intercoastal waterway (in south Florida) for first half of the walk and along the ocean for the last half. The views are tough to take. Anyway, all of a sudden I started noticing these incredible sunsets so I started taking pictures with my cell phone. Here are a few...

Rattus rattus at Lord Howe Island

When I visited several years ago the small but excellent museum had several stick insects on display. Also, I don't understand why this image of a wrecked ship was used. It is not the SS Makambo, nor is Ned's Beach shown. https://www.forbes.com/sites/scotttravers/2025/01/09/the-ss-makambo-ran-aground-near-lord-howe-island-in-1918-a-decade-later-we-lost-several-island-species/

When I was a child I had the ambition to become a biologist, but that didn't work out. It seems that we know more about the moon than the abysmal depths of the world's oceans. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20250130-colossal-squid-the-eerie-ambassador-from-the-abyss

Irrigation Repairs

(Wasn’t sure where to put this. Mods feel free to move it if needed) When I first moved into the house a few years ago, the irrigation was working fine when I pressed a button, so I never looked too deeply into it. After recently having a valve break, and having the typical big-ego but low-skill professional come by and not fix it correctly for $250, I got more personally involved. After some research, I decided to do just things correctly myself instead of calling out more “professionals”. I added a PVB valve, three new irrigation valves, rebuilt the manifold, and redid the initial pipe set up off the supply line which is a dedicated irrigation line. …

The Resurgance of a Menace.. ** Squirm Alert **

**** Fair warning ..For those a bit squeem-ish when it comes to gross things, you might want to look away.. **** A few years back, i'd mentioned something ..somewhere.. regarding an insect " pest " that legitimately qualifies as a threat.. Not necessarily to plants, but to ..anything else, inc. humans.. While flies themselves are pretty gross creatures, the New World Screw worm, Cochliomyia homnivorax ups the " Gross " factor ..just a bit.. The Latin name literally translates to " Man Eater " ..and yes, this Bug- eyed, Obligate Parasite can kill a man ( ..or woman ) and was once one of the greatest threats to livestock in the US " back in the …

It took a few years but finally made my return to what i consider to be the biggest signal of spring, - in the desert at least - Each year, as January ends, and February arrives, thousands of Rock, Gem, and Fossil geeks from across the country and world converge upon dozens of venues spread out across Tucson to admire, learn about, and purchase tens of thousands of pieces of rock mined from across the globe.. Some quite simple and inexpensive ..others costing as much as a new car -or more- Adding to this, various vendors from across the globe attend some of the different shows to sell other art - related items, so, you not only get a mental education in eve…

Urban Dinosaurs?? How a common CA Lizard is demonstrating rapid evolution in the city..

A great story discussing how populations of Sceloporus occidentalis, the ubiquitous and always charming Western Fence Lizard, which reside in human altered environments are demonstrating rapid evolution- driven changes in response to the unique range of challenges they face in such places.. https://californiacurated.com/2024/10/08/the-western-fence-lizard-the-world-of-scaly-sunbathing-acrobats/ An interesting side note: the real time adaptive strategies noted in " urban " Western Fence Lizard populations, may also be occurring within city dwelling populations of both Ornate Tree Lizard, Urosaurus ornatus and Desert Spiny Lizard, Sceloporus magister here in AZ…

What a beautiful place to live
by happypalms- 1 reply

The town I grew up in Coffs Harbour is beautiful town. When growing up it only had a population of 12000 people. A town known for fishing timber and farming and tourism back in the day. Now it’s become to crowded and busy for me to live there I have a property about 50 kilometres north living halfway between Coffs and Grafton so the best of both worlds as they say. A place well known for some of our fabulous beaches.

A killer of a wasp in the garden
by happypalms- 2 replies

When working in the garden there are certain hidden little dangers that lurk either biting or stinging. And if these guys get you you’re in trouble they hurt. I did get stung the other day three times on the face two on the lips and the other near the eye let’s just say Botox treatment was not required that day that’s for sure (not that I do Botox) but omg it hurt for hours right into the next day. The problem is they love nesting under palm leaves and cycads two of my favourite plants in the garden and there’s quite a few places to nest. As soon as you disturb the nest and by the time you have worked out what’s going on it’s to late and you run and there after you. Bees …

The property where Dick Douglas created one of the most significant hardy palm gardens in California is for sale. It's in Walnut Creek, just down the road from the Ruth Bancroft Garden. Dick and Ruth were friendly and exchanged plants. Many of the older palms in the public Ruth Bancroft Garden originated with Dick. The current owner renovated the house to great effect, and did an excellent job maintaining and improving the garden. Let's hope whoever buys it appreciates the garden.
