Unlike some other Palm Talkers, I didn’t have the good fortune to be born and raised in a palmy environment; I am a product of the industrial parts of Ohio, Cleveland to be specific. I left Ohio in 1985 for California and have been here ever since. Haven’t regretted that decision for a New York Nanosecond, but sometimes you think about the place of your roots now and then. I just got back from a seven day Cleveland sabbatical, for a high school reunion, and also to hang out with my younger brother for a bit. Our nuclear family moved into the house brother now occupies back in 1970, and the oak tree pictured below was already there, about forty feet tall. …

An adorable couple got married and had wedding photos taken at The Gardens at Lake Merritt's Lakeside Palmetum, in Oakland, California. It was covered in People magazine. The theme of their wedding was BART because they met on the San Francisco Bay Area's commuter rail system, BART. Best Palmetum picture is here: https://www.bart.gov/news/articles/2023/news20230816

A once in a lifetime fly by..
by Silas_Sancona- 2 replies

As if this wasn't already a packed year for star gazers, it appears we can add another major Astronomical event to the list of " should see " events.. While the " exact " details regarding brightness ..to the un-aided eye- are still unknown, at this moment at least, if it does survive it's approach to and away from the Sun, the " window for viewing " will be a once in a lifetime event as the mentioned Comet may not ever pass through our Solar System again. If it does, it will be 100's or 1,000's of years for now.. Already scheduled some early mornings.. Hopefully it will be cooler by then, lol.. https://www.forbes.com/sites/ericmack/2023/08/21/newfound…

Amazon hack last night

This is just a reminder to check your emails everyday. I do order items from Amazon since some things just aren’t easily found in stores in rural PR. However when I got a confirmation notice about “my” Xbox purchases I at first thought the emails themselves were spam. However when I logged into my Amazon account I found records of a chat at midnight my time where someone reported that some items ordered a month ago were never received. The chat questioned the delay in reporting, but the criminal wrote that they had been out of town. Anyway Amazon issued a gift card refund which the criminal immediately spent on some non refundable Xbo…

Adventures in home orcharding 1 2

From the first time I went to an apple orchard when I was young and picked an apple off the tree and ate it right there in the shade of the tree it grew on, something changed in me. Cutting out all the middle men and getting to the source directly became very desirable to me. I knew when I had a house, whatever land I had claim to would be used to grow some of the food I ate organically. Funny how life changes when you get to peek behind the curtain and get a real understanding of things. How wanting the best for the plants I grow, results in the fruit they produce being the best food I can eat, resulting in an overwhelming urge to not be a “normal” spoiled human being…

I joined this forum when i was in 8th grade, i was literally still in middle school. Ive been fairly active every year since and have learned A LOT about palms, and plants in general. Now im coming into my senior year of high school, and its time to think about what i want to do in life. It is looking very likely that i will be going into a plant science program through UF. Seriously, if it hadnt been for this forum i wouldnt be in this position right now, and i want to thank everybody who has contributed to this. There are many different fields that i can go into with a degree in this subject, and i will let yall know what happens whenever that time comes. It is very unl…

Homes ..from Seaweed??
by Silas_Sancona- 1 reply

Another interesting video discussing the potential of " Making lemonade out of lemons " from a smelly and highly annoying Seaweed that seems to be creating more issues across the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean in recent years.. Enjoy that the inventor is a humble human being who is spreading his wealth w/ out any attached expectations. https://www.businessinsider.com/how-bricks-made-from-invasive-seaweed-clean-mexicos-beaches-2023-7 Would be interesting to evaluate how a single story, 1500sq ft model home made of these blocks withstands hurricanes in the Cat. 3-5 range, let alone how well they stand up to floodwaters, fire, and / or other pressing natural disas…

Bird problem
by Darold Petty- 7 replies

Calling all ornithologists ! My garden is honored to host a nesting Anna's hummingbird, (Calypte anna). However she chose an inconvenient spot about 5 feet off the ground in a narrow passageway in my garden. My head would pass about 18 inches from the nest if I attempted to walk by to the far corner. I have several important potted palms back there that are overdue for irrigation. Every time I look, she is on the nest or feeding the chicks. I know that hummingbirds enter a torpor state called estivation at night to conserve energy. Would this be true for the female on the nest ? Can I safely pass by without disturbance a few hours after dark ? I don't…

Anyone have any personal insight to the differences between the two? I occasionally drive between Miami and up to Daytona, and from Melbourne to Orlando and notice subtle differences in slash pines. I'm curious to see if others have made any observations.

South American Mahogany

I'm a beginning wood worker. A real amateur. LOL January last year I cut a section of South American Mahogany back in the bush. Packed it out for about an hour and then soaked it in a can of salt water for a year and a half. Someone once told me that this would prevernt or limit splitting/craking when it was allowed to dry. Ever hear of that??? Took it out of the water about 2 weeks ago letting it begin to dry. Then I began running it across my Jointer and I've gotten this far, so far. Not really sure what I'm gonna do w/it if it drys w/o splitting.

Dear all - how many years I have been absent ... I didn't count and don't know it. The most important thing for me is: I am here again, among so many lovely and supportive people. Only this counts, nothing else. There are moments in life where I don't understand life. Good things happened but bad as well. you win when you know how to deal with it and don't give up on yourself. Happy to talk to with you again, today is a good day. 😇 PS: my giant H. forsteriana called "Nemesis" is still alive. And ... my home is too small meanwhile.

This is typical German kind of cake (tradition especially in Eastern Germany, recipe by my Granny and for 20 pieces): What you need: 1 package of puff pastry 750 g curd 2 eggs 1 packet vanilla pudding powder 2 small packets vanilla sugar Normal sugar and powdered sugar What to do: Put 1. - 6. in a bowl und stir carefully until you have a soft mass. Take the puff pastry and cut it into squares (important). Fill every square with a heaped spoon of your prepared curd mass, fold the corners over and guide them into the center. Press together there and at the seams. Off into the oven. Bake them with 160 °C…
