Cold Winters Correlation with Sunspots
by Ed in Houston- 6 replies
- 1.8k views
Most people have probably heard of the sun's 11 year sunspot cycle. Some years there are almost no sunspots at the trough of the cycle and represent a calm less active and cooler sun. One can think of it as when there are a lot of sun spots it is boiling and when there are few spots it is cooler. Recent sun spot cycles: Notice the relationship of the years of the cold events below relative to the sun spot cycles. The cold events tend to occur near the sunspot minimum. January 1950 saw unprecedented cold and snowfall in the Pacific Northwest, with normally mild Seattle and Portland both falling below zero. The winter of 1962–63 was th…

Great chance to observe FL’s microclimates

Even if Florida avoids the freeze, this cold event should cast light on FL microclimates, including eastern vs. western barrier islands, urban heat islands, and the lake effect, especially for South Bay to Pahokee. https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/01/28/us/winter-weather-monday-wxc/index.html

It's back: El Niño expected later this year, forecasters say: https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/its-back-el-ni%C3%B1o-expected-later-this-year-forecasters-say/ar-AAyFm39 ".... El Niño is a periodic natural warming of ocean water in the tropical Pacific that impacts weather in the U.S. and around the world. So Mild I Could Grow Palms in Northern Ohio
by Xerarch- 25 replies
- 1.5k views
It was 57 degrees here in Northern Ohio today, January 8th. In fact we’ve only really had one cold streak so far this winter, it got down to about 18 degrees in December for the lowest so far. That means if I had planted a bunch of Sabal Palmetto in the summer they would still be doing great. I’ve been reading since mid December numerous articles and here on PT about a supposed polar vortex coming this year but it keeps getting pushed off and pushed off. I don’t even see anything that critical as far out as the forecast goes. I don’t believe for a second that we’ve already seen the worst of winter this year, but it’s got to come sometime.

GFS and even EURO Model shows very significant cold in near future
by Sabal_Louisiana- 5 replies

Curious to see what the next days GFS runs will show for potential (major?) arctic outbreaks last week of this January. These models have been flip-flopping alot and overstating cold lately so dont lose sleep just yet but its looking ugly late Jan and maybe early Feb. The 1800z run for Jan 18 has a fanciful nightmare scenario a long 10 days out with a historic 1062 mb high coming out of Canada with brunt of cold going into the eastern third of the US but even Texas would not be spared. Predicted low for Fla panhandle Jan 30 am at 10 F with snow in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. Worse, Euro Model now picking up on this for 10 days out with Birmingham AL a…

Is my microclimate really that warm?
by NC_Palms- 16 replies
- 1.3k views
My weather station was reporting 82.ºF while the Weather Channel app was reporting 69ºF. My readings are always within a few degrees of what is reported by the Weather Channel App. My entire "yard" is surrounded by cement, enclosed by a wooden fence and its faces southeast. So I'd imagine that would increase the temperature or its just the sun hitting on my sensor.

Concern with USDA hardiness maps
by NC_Palms- 19 replies
- 2.4k views
I was thinking, since the USDA hardiness maps only measure the minimum average temperatures for only a period of time, it would seem like the post 1980’s hardiness maps of the Southeast make everything seem colder than it really is. For example, in the earliest maps created in the 40’s and 60’s, zone 8 extends much further inland in the Southeast. But in the post 1980’s maps, climates that were originally labeled as zone 8 became either 7a or 7b. Even in Florida, most of the state from Orlando and south had originally a zone 10 climate (zones 11+ didn’t exist yet) so it explains how royal palms had a much more extensive range father north up the Florida peninsula.

Florida SE Rainy Season 2018
by Matthew92- 24 replies
- 2.1k views
Just thought I'd create a thread for anyone who wants to share their rainfall situation this season. I had FL mainly in mind, but if anyone from the Southeast or even somewhere else wants to share that's fine too. I just got a strong pop up storm that wasn't weakening or only sideswiping my location (which most of them have been so far). I love it. Classic summer storm: got a little of everything: wind, lightning, about 1.3 inches of rain. I wouldn't want to live somewhere that doesn't get storms like this.

*Wishful* Wx Forecast model blunders
by Silas_Sancona- 4 replies

Every so often even somewhat trusty weather models greatly get it wrong.. A suggested forecast that is. This thread is dedicated to some of the more share-worthy you might come across.. Tonight's contender: Total accumulated precip. forecast (18z FV3- GFS run), per Tropical Tidbits.. Note the totals on the far right. 12- 18"+of rain for Phoenix?? Ditch the coat, for a boat? ..and still, S. Cal doesn't get much.. Gotta love software glitches

I am reading about the weather out West and see predictions of a somewhat fierce Santa Ana wind event with gusts up to 55 MPH. It seems to have a relationship with cold air advection and interaction with the warmer Pacific. My understanding was that the Santa Ana was always hot air.

Frost
by PalmTreeDude- 27 replies
- 2.3k views
I thought I'd start a thread about frost after seeing very thick frost this morning. How often does your climate get frost (if it even does)? Where are you located? Are you in a cold/warm microclimate or have any? Here in Virginia, near Chester, we get frost commonly during the Winter and late Fall. Tree canopy (I use Leyland Cypress for this, it works well) and close proximity to water can protect places here from a lot of the first frosts. Here was the frost this morning, the first picture is from my front yard (exposed to the West) and the second picture is from a lot with Leyland Cypress in it. Notice how the closer you get to the Leyland Cypress the less frost there …

Record Breaking Heatwave Far North Queensland.
by greysrigging- 18 replies
- 1.3k views
An unprecedented heatwave is occurring in the Northern Queensland coastal districts this week. Yesterday many coastal towns recorded max temps of 43c (110f ), smashing November and all time records. An AWS at Mount Stuart just inland from Townsville reached 45.2c ( 113.4f ), some suburbs of Cairns hit 43.6c ( 110.5f ), Proserpine Airport 44.9c ( 112.8f ). Tropical North Queensland rarely sees extremes of heat or cold, and even towns at altitude on the Atherton Tablelands inland from Cairns hit 40c ( 104f ) yesterday.. Massive bushfires also burning out of control around Bundaberg. Another extreme day forecast today and for the rest of the week. https://www.abc.net.a…

Over the years , I've had a few problems with WU , but they usually get it straightened out eventually. Beginning a week or so ago , using my long used Bookmark , It did not go to the usual , start page . The bookmark has been there for several years . Now it goes to a maps selection page . Formerly it went to a page with a large USA composite map , with smaller maps underneath that , and we could select maps for different data maps that we wanted . Each one of these had a button to select various area of the World etc to focus on . I like(d) it . I have tried various other addresses at WU to try to find that original page , but can't…

California Reservoir Levels
by joe_OC- 8 replies

With all the rains we have been getting the last couple of days, I thought it would be interesting to see what our water situation looks like. Here is a very useful link that shows how much water is currently in our reservoirs: California Reservoir Levels We are currently OVER 100% of historical average. That's without today's values. Here in Huntington Beach, CA, we have accumulated over 1.25" of rain for 12/6/2018. Haven't seen this level of rain in a while.

What Is Your Best Yard Microclimate?
by PalmTreeDude- 22 replies

What is the best microclimate in your yard? Mine is a part of my back yard in a corner that faces south it has Leyland Cypress and other trees and bushes all aro around it to the north, which usually protects this area from the first few frosts. Don't mind my two raised beds, the winds from Michael messed them up. The Elephant Ears in the back never bor big like the ones in my front yard.

Winter Storm Diego

Looks like my predictions for this winter were correct. Greenville is projected to get 1” to 3” inches, which is about our yearly snowfall averages in a just a few hours. At least the air temperature will be above freezing so I doubt anything will accumulate.
