How My Latitude Compares To Some Places Around The World 1 2
by PalmTreeDude- 53 replies
- 3.7k views
So I found this pretty neat website where you can click on an exact point on the map and it draws a line in the Northern and Southern hemispheres of where that latitude is. This is pretty crazy because a lot of the places that share my latitude (and many others here) are capable of growing palms that can't grow here (and that are many zones less cold hardy than here) due to those few cold snaps we can get. Here is the site, what areas around the world share your latitude? http://mapfrappe.com/appisoll.html

COLD in FL, BRRR!

Wow, I was shocked how cold it got here in Satellite Beach last night. Don't remember temps like these ever in Nov. More like end of Dec weather. I woke up at 5:30 am to 44F! Then by sunrise it had dropped another 2 degrees to 42F. Luckily I did decide to bring in my seedlings. It's only 57F right now at 12:30. They are forecasting 45F again for tonight.

Winter of '80-'81 in Central Florida
by Bill H2DB- 9 replies

Being a weather nut of sorts , I have kept weather data/info for a long time in central Fla. Here is a scan of late December 1980 into January-early February 1981. I was basically tracking the difference between Daytona area weather ,and the area of Fla in the Heartland area. The data for Wauchula was taken from the local weekly paper the Herald Advocate . The station is a cold location overall for the area . It is the Ona Fla agricultural station . Quite a run of cold compared to recent times in the same areas . The intrusion into the Data around Jan 24 is from a graph that was on the next page , and the scale was insufficient , so .....

Welcome rain now, ..Potential cold to kick off December later??

After a very dry start to the rainy /snow season, and resultant extreme, extended end to the fire season across Cali and the Southwest, the first in what looks to be a series of storms is currently rolling in across Nor. Cal. and the PAC. N.W. atm. While it's looking like most of it will miss Southern CA. and out here across the low desert for now, the current forecasts are still suggesting subsequent storms should finally bring rain back to both areas and snow up in the mountains. If some of the more aggressive forecast models pan out, much of SoCal. could see at least 3" of possible rainfall towards the end of the month, with higher amounts / possible accumulating snow …

We broke 70F

While many of you have broken out your sweaters and long pants, down here north of the old Monkey Jungle, we busted 70F for our low temperature. A low of 65F with a high temperature that barely made it to 80F. Also, what seemed like low humidity (probably 65%-70%). Does not take much to make me happy!

Storm Season is here!
by Daryl- 0 replies

Well, first round of storms here in quite a while. We do get storms all year round, but Nov/Dec is the period of highest activity, with daily afternoon storms and sometimes three or four a day. We certainly need a few good storms as it has been very dry here, and despite a decent week of rain about a month ago, we have not had a drop since.... The storms here can be quite severe with torrential rain, very frequent CG lightning and high winds, along with hail, so we always hope for the 'milder' storms that just bring rain and thunder... Looks like this approaching storm is just rain and a few rumbles...perfect! Here's an example of h…

The upcoming "modern solar minimum"
by Turtlesteve- 6 replies
- 2.9k views
I watched a presentation on climate and the upcoming solar minimum. The short summary is that we're headed for a ~30+ year period of reduced solar activity starting in 2020. The IPCC / global warming consensus tends to discount the impact, but the presenter believes that solar forcing has been underestimated, and we'll see severely colder temperatures in the next couple decades, potentially leading to crop failures and famine. (2nd link is the presentation which is quite long but interesting) https://www.livescience.com/61716-sun-cooling-global-warming.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_yqIj38UmY This certainly wouldn't fit with my long term gard…

I took these pics at the stoplight in front of my office while going for a bite to eat. I have never seen Washies' fronds with their leaf bases (even old ones) detach from their trunk due to winds. The gusts here are extraordinarily strong.

Hurricane season is still cranking, tropical storm Michael has formed and moving north into the Gulf of Mexico. Looks like the Florida panhandle is in his way, but all in the south should keep an eye out. A little similar to Charlie back in 2004, hopefully will not have similar effects. But I do hope it gives SW Florida some good rain before the raining season ends.

Tornadoes In Tampa

We had a cold front move through and make it a lot more comfortable to garden, but got a dose of severe weather with it: https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/photos-severe-storms-tornadoes-cause-damage-near-tampa-florida/70006529 I heard the emergency broadcast tones on the way home just in time to see a bunch of dead sabal fronds go flying across the highway. "Vigorous cold front" was apparently an understatement.

Warm October day
by Tyrone- 3 replies

Well I live in probably one of the mildest climates in Western Australia and maybe even mainland Australia. Last summer I didn't record a maximum over 33.9C and that occurred on dec 9 2017. Well today we hit 33.3C in October not even summer or late spring. Humidity was way down again unusual for here and my irrigation system is on flat out tonight to rehydrate things. I felt like I was back up in Perth but even Perth is usually milder than that in October. I'm sitting outside now at 7.30pm enjoying a few beers listening to the sprinklers and chorus of all different species of frogs in 26C heat. Loving the balminess of it all, but if this is spring, summer is going to be a…

Could climate change be good? 1 2

It is safe to say that as palm addicts, we have a bias towards the tropics and subtropics. So for the past few days, I have been wondering if climate change is as bad as it is being projected to be. Within the past few decades, we have been seeing an extraordinary growth of the global tropics and subtropics towards both poles. On average, the tropics expand toward the poles 93 miles per decade. This is very noticeable in Florida, where mangrove trees are being found as far north as Saint Augustine. I predict that it may be too late to reverse the effects of climate change. If this is true, we as a society will need to adapt to a tropical expanding world. This includ…

Here's a shot of some local PWS's via W.U. taken this morn at about 7AM. (The DP has actually dropped since yesterday , when it was at 78-80 for much of the day , and that combined with air temps of about 90-92 , gave heat indexes of about 107 or so....) Surf Temps have been running about 86 deg for a few weeks . 7AM 9-21-18 DB area by Bill H, on Flickr
