Wind Chill

How does the wind and the wind chill affect palms or plants in general? My local NWS is calling for wind chills potentially in the mid to upper teens on i think Tuesday night. Should i wrap my Queens? This would definitely by far be the coldest wind all winter.

Using palm species to accurately assess USDA zone

I purchased property just south of Daytona Beach on a barrier I am located about 1/2 mi from the Atlantic ocean on the east and about the same distance from the intracoastal waterway to the West. According to the most updated USDA zone maps this area is listed as 9b. I have a theory that where I am may actually be 10a due to some of the true tropical plants growing in the area. ie. Coconut palms with 12 ft of trunk showing. I have planted 107 different species of palms across my property. It has been very fun collecting, planting, and growing the palms. I hope that the performance of the palms will be an accurate indicator of the true USDA zone that i am in . Volusi…

This is tongue in cheek but I noticed Corona, Ca. and other normally beneficient spots in California, Arizona and Nevada are under Winter Weather Advisories. Snow showers may occur until 6 AM PST tomorrow in Corona, Ca. with high/low 48F/32F (Coconut Blues but for micro-climate). It is snowing North of Phoenix, where downtown reports 38F at 3PM MST with predicted high/low of 52F/44F today with a few snow flurries tomorrow. Vegas is a toasty 39F mid-day with an inch of snow on the strip predicted through 10 AM tomorrow morning. At the same time, freezing Florida, per the head of the weather thread as I spawn this, is cooling down towards the mid-70’s with hi…

Dropped to 31F here at Leu Gardens and is back to 34 now at 7:15. The cable connecting our weather station to my computer failed yesterday so I can't tell how long it was at 31F until I hook the new one up. Tender foliage on the drive in looked mostly alright, a few bananas burnt but not all the way wilted. The bananas and heliconias in my yard weren't black and wilted and the coconut still looked green.

Orange, CA climate

I was looking at weather underground here in the state of California and noticed something odd happening down in Villa Park currently at 11:15PM. Some areas are 78F and within walkable distance it's 18-20 degrees cooler. Obviously some compression heating up the air, but it's it combining with marine air and thus the temp drop?

When Does Spring Arrive in Florida?
by chinandega81- 1 follower

Obviously the calendar says March 21, but what criteria do you go by for it to "feel" like Spring has arrived in Florida or the subtropics? If we go by daily average highs, it's tough in South Florida. The coolest high is 76 so we would have to pick a higher number, say 80...but that would be a more summerlike temperatures vs. Springtime temps. We could go by day length or sun angle, and that to me makes it "feel" like Spring sometime in March, which coincides with the calendar date. We could also go by when things start to first bloom...my favorite....I notice Hong Kong orchard trees begin to bloom in December...but that feels too early. Mango trees start to bloom h…

I know that this is nothing for a lot of y'all up north, but it's kind of a big deal here lol. I've lived in Texas for 12 years (actually tomorrow is the anniversary of my migration), and this will be the 4th time I've seen snow - and this will be the most. Hoping to get some good pics of my dog and my Washy in the white stuff, everything else is already inside.

New toy + weather data project

Howdy all. Just thought I'd show something I started working on. I recently added an Ambient Weather station to the yard and have done a little Python programming for the data it provides. I'm sure I could have used another app to get the same information or even just made macros in excel, but where's the fun in that? The goal is to have my own master data file that I can add to and reference for years to come. To make using it easier I wanted a script that formats and pulls out all the data nuggets for me, so I really just have to download a cvs file and let the computer magic do its thing. So here's what I got so far: - One master data file th…

This thread is to discuss the possibility of a Florida freeze in the month of December 2020. Mike’s Weather Page posted the below graph on Facebook earlier today of forecast low temperatures for December 26th: If this plays out, much of central and north Florida will see their first freeze this winter. Forecast accuracy 9 days out is notoriously poor so at this juncture it’s just something to keep an eye on.

Why do people exaggerate how cold Italy gets during winter?
by rossifer2010- 1 follower

Its always been peculiar to me since I started looking at posts in this forum; people keep talking of this "severe cold" and "drought" the Italian South sees that is supposedly absent in every other subtropical environment. It is a notion I do not understand; as we all know, Sicily, and Apulia make up a significant area of the Italian South, and both of those areas are Zone 10 climates at least. Even in other parts of the Italian South, winter minima often aren't that cold; in Palermo, and Catania, for instance, it is rare for winter temps to fall below the mid 30s, and when they do, a quick warm-up to a mild afternoon is almost always ensued. Those cities are solid USDA …

Temperatures Near the Ground
by ahosey01- 9 replies

The crazy weather in my yard has really got me thinking and wondering more about weather than I ever had before. The front yard is a consistent 5-7 degrees warmer than the back yard. However, the back yard sits maybe 10ft lower than the front yard. Is it the difference in elevation that accounts for that temperature variation, or something else? Also, just how much warmer is the air above the ground at - say - 10ft or 20ft or 30ft? I’m highly curious.

Best Home Weather Station
by ahosey01- 5 replies

Hey guys, I want to measure high, low, precip and humidity. Don’t care about much else. Want something that can take the Arizona sun without decaying all the parts. Doesn’t need to be crazy wind resistant or anything or have too many fancy features. Whats the best combination of low price and high quality for my needs? Would also like to be able to capture historical data in a phone app or something but that’s low on the priority list.

Winter 2020.. A glimpse ahead..

With October quickly moving along, thought it might be time to take a look at what may lie ahead for the up-coming winter here in the U.S. Climate Prediction Center released their latest update to the CFSv2's North American Model plots/ Ensemble thoughts on how the next 3-4 months could pan out. Take a look.. **As is the case with any forecast, nothing is set in stone and any pattern set ups not presently noted atm, that might occur later, can shift what is suggested presently. Keep in mind the CFS itself has it's hiccups and can lean either too warm or dry or vice versa from time to time** That said, the 8 or so models depicted here are all used when making l…
