Californian's, are you watering?

I was out out weeding over the weekend and noticed that most of my beds were bone dry for the first couple of inches, even under canopy and mulch. I last watered last weekend before the big freeze to make sure everything was hydrated and to raise the humidity and soil temperatures a bit. These cold, dry winds with dew points in the teens combined with sunny skies have sucked the moisture out of the ground. If you are not watering, you might want to check your soil. I have never had to water in February before.

Something not usually extensively shared and discussed on palmtalk. Kind of an observatory, sharing record lows and other usefull climate data. I would suggest a previous report about the before-winter. Here's mine: it was a late november and december unusually cold, without cloud covered sky and temps getting down to 2C/35,6F, once.

Are locations in California "frost-free"? 1 2

Desmond Muirhead's book on Palm's reported that freezing temperatures had been recorded on the pier at Santa Catalina Island and accordingly no location in California could be considered "frost-free".The discussion on this board suggests that their are many micro-climates in California that are "frost-free".Where are the micro-climates in California that may be most suitable for the growing of coconut palms?

Thermometers !!!

I am amazed at the number of posts that I see , in which the posting person is guessing at the temperature in their yard , or relying on TV station data , or some other source , such as a vehicle readout . The temperature that counts is the one in your yard , and even that varies within your own yard ,let alone over an area as big as most towns etc . So , with digital therms available very inexpensively , what not buy a few , and park them around ? Or do a survey of your yard by walking around with a therm during the freeze ? Lot of info for your own little world right there . An example : https://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-Indoor-Outdoor-T…

Long term models have persistent cold air funneling its way deep down south. A ridge is blocking the air from retreating, so it may be long term and COLD! If it keeps up, we may have freezes into SW Florida. I am preparing now as I am off school until Jan 8th, so I do not get "caught". Where is El NIno when you need him?

The other day I was in conversation with a Realtor and was asked, "Where is the best place in orange county for building a palm garden?" This really got me thinking. If I were to ever move, where would I want to go based on palms alone, within Orange county of course. I'm in Orange, about 14 miles from the ocean. We can tend to get a bit cool but also fairly hot. I've been here only 2.5 years and have recorded 107. My soil is fairly well draining and rich. The winds and dry air can get downright nasty with 40mph gusts with single digit humidity. I assume that this question is also dependent on what kind of palms. For discussion sake this palm garden would be focused on…

Florida Freeze - January 18, 2018 (advective)
by RedRabbit- 14 replies

This thread is to document temperature data from the Florida freeze occurring on January 18th, 2018. Temperatures were generally about 1 standard deviation below the average annual low for most locations. Winds were approximately 5-10mph from the NNW and there were no reports of frost. This freeze was unique because it was advective rather than the much more common radiational. Due the rarity of advective freezes there's not a lot of local temperature data so I decided to document it in the interest of later being able to reference how local microclimates performed under these conditions. The images that follow were taken from Wunderground.com between ~7:05am an…

Hard times coming on the Northern Gulf Coast 1 2

Spring keeps getting uglier and uglier. New low predictions for 1st week of January are 26,21,24,27,27,33. I am not sure I ever remember 5 continuous nights below freezing, and almost a 6th. This decade has been a tough one on the garden. Got at least 2 palms that will not survive, and likely more that will bite the bullets as well. Bye bye Jubutia. Looking at my shovel and thinking I will dig up my last remaining B. alfredii. Quite a few of the Citrus already badly injured from previous freezes won't be back. I sit in shock, without true words to describe my feelings.

Forecast not looking good for Texas...

Just yesterday, as some may already know, NOAA provided their temperature and precipitation predictions for the 2017-2018 winter season. According to their prediction, it looks like a good chunk of the state of Texas is bound to see warmer than average temperatures during this coming winter; good news for us palm lovers! On the other side of the coin, it also looks like, unfortunately, the Texas coast will see below average precipitation. If these predictions hold up, hopefully us Texas won’t have to worry so much about severe artic blasts rearing their ugly heads on our tropical plants. While supplemental watering may be needed, there is no need for dread - we’re no stra…

I am curious, what have you heard about the long term forecast for this winter for the Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida? I have heard conflicting things. A couple of sources I have heard from or read said that this winter will by warmer and drier than normal, and a couple of sources said it will be chilly and wet. So, what have you heard? John

Video taken Jan 9th 2018 Rain began at noon lasted till dawn. We had a break right before 5pm, took this short quick video. Temps dipped to 8C/46F right before dawn the next day. So I turned on the IR heat lamps from 4pm (9th) till 9am (10th). It's probably overkill, but I must admit, this winter (knocking on wood), has been very benevolent with us. Days in the 70-80's and nights in the 50's. This time last year, I had the coconuts completely covered. I think last years winter rainfall was a record-setting one. So far, I have set up the tarps only to deflect the cool rain from pelting directly onto the coconuts. This weekend they're calling for 80…

The wet stuff...

Well, after a very dry and much warmer than average start to 18, looks as if the West/ Southwest is in for a bit of a pattern change. How long or brief? We'll see but anything is welcomed, esp throughout S. CA and AZ. While there has been a bit of hymn and haw back east regarding the weather pattern sparing the west much of the brutal cold everyone else has been enduring, keep in mind it isn't all rosy glasses in t-shirts here either. While the recent stretch in the 70s and 80s (in a few spots) this time of year is obviously great for people and plants, there's an unfavorable side to the coin. Keep in mind that alot of our water going forward comes from winter…
